Caution: the below post is fake, the boarduser "SouthernSlayer" is not dead as purported by "fireflyfanatic".

Well im new to the board and really have only come out of a recommendation by a dear friend of mine who used to post here, his name is Andrew but he posted on this site as 'southern slayer'. But sadly he is no longer with us,due to unknown circumstances andrew saw fit to take his own life about 2 weeks ago. He loved life and lived his very short one to the fullest, with a great passion for all things joss whedon including firefly.being a great friend of mine, it came as a shock to both me, our friends and his family. so i thought it would be a nice tribute to him if i began to post here and dedicated a thread in his honour, so its with great sadness and joy that i dedicate this thread to my very good friend andrew, thankyou for the years of friendship and for introducing me to the world of joss whedon may you find in the afterlife what you were so desperately seeking in life.

Furthermore, here's an old thread extremely weird in a bad freaky way. Posted 4 months ago:

That doesn't make any sense! The "Last Visited"

that Member visited fff.net... Look at another

wnerraw's "Last Visited" was Oct 28, 2002.
I clicked on the wnerraw's profile several times

I suppose I have seen folks going thru the departed's personal mail and diary once they have moved on... I guess there isn't much of a need for privacy anymore...

I just don't know... but still...

Does fff.net pop up on his desktop automatically with the passwords filled in? I suppose it's likely that he has fff.net set up as his personal homepage on the browser...

Then again, maybe it's the cops or just family member pouring over every last website he visited to see where he's been and wondering what he did and why he did it.

It's the kind of thing that people want answers to when there just ain't no answer sometimes.

And even the most rational people can make the rashest of judgements at times too.

But gonna have to call this one a fake.

I have been here on the board for a while, and although I was not Andrew's best friend or anything, I did have conversations with him a few times. I am very sorry to learn of this tragedy. He was a good guy. He had a great love for Firefly, and always expressed himself with passion. He hated Fox, like all good Browncoats, and wasn't afraid to give his opinions on them. I admired him in life and wish him well in the next life.

I only use Haken's email to contact him. I sent a private email to FireFlyFanatic trhough FFFn and it didn't bounce. Haken can get the address, plus information gleaned from the IP address and time of posting can give us an exact address. Is what he did legal?

So while we are still on this topic. Is it really okay to go thru someone else's private diary, mail, letters, papers, computer files, including the websites they visited, once they have pasted on? and let's just preclude any type of death under mysterious or intentional circumstances (looking for murder clues, etc.)

I know that people do sometimes. But it just feels wrong. It's like, "oh, he/she is dead now, it doesn't really matter". Aren't private things still private? if they had wanted to share those things, they would have shared it.

Privacy is no longer an issue for the deceased. Really, it's a question to be answered by the living people involved. If you want to board up their room and never think on it again, or if you want to prop the body up in a corner of a bar and toast to it all night, that's your business.

Here is what I think:

I don't think 'the living' suddenly gains more rights to speak for the person whether said person is dead or alive. If they didn't have the right in the first place, what transpired that made them gain that right? and to completely disrespect a person's privacy? My point was that someone's things are private to them should always be private, whether the person is there or not.

Sure, legally, the dead's property is transferred to someone living for custody. Legally, the living own those things. But what I posit is that we should respect that person's privacy even when they are no longer around. My thinking is that if it was private, it should be private. It they had wanted to share it, they would have. period.

And you can thinking about the person as they are without boarding up the room or tearing thru the diary too. I have only thought about preserving my parents (mummy like) when they depart - I imagine the cost would be astronomical though... but I read from National Geographic that folks in Malaysia and Africa routinely dress up the dead an d let them stand in the living room or in the basement for the first year before burial; without preservatives, that is they rot within some 10 feet or you for the entire year... Though that's not the same privacy issue....

Since the dead cannot, the living must. I don't consider the dead "people". I show nothing but respect to the bodies and posessions, but they are only objects, and somebody needs to be responsible for them.
Quote:

I'm really fighting the urge to be sarcastic here.

I was only giving a couple of extreme, real-life examples. Don't read too much into these.

It's difficult not to personify the dead. The closer you are to them, the more this will happen.

Am I the only one who had the weird mental vid image after seeing South's resurrection?

----------
Southernslayer lies motionless on a table in a torture room. A hulking figure looms over the prone browncoat, pokes him twice and comments "Yup. He's dead."

:fade to black for commercial break:

An old man in a precisely made suit leans down as Southernslayer, resuscitated, coughs his way back to life. "You died, Mr. Southernslayer. But if you die, we Fox executives can't taunt all of you about cancelling your favorite series, now can we...?"
----------

Yes, I've got a morbid imagination, to plaster this situation onto the events of "War Stories".

History doesn't always repeat itself. Sometimes it merely shouts "Weren't you listening the first time?!?" and lets fly with a club.

Hello there,

I was starting to see this post thing like the joke that Mal played on Simon in Serenity. Sick and bendy but ultimately harmless and something we can laugh at, but if LoveKaylee/FFF is just here to tell how lame we are then the jokes on her/it/whatever. We might be lame but we're having a blast and we're mighty 'cause we have each other.

Yes, I've got a morbid imagination, to plaster this situation onto the events of "War Stories".

History doesn't always repeat itself. Sometimes it merely shouts "Weren't you listening the first time?!?" and lets fly with a club.

Right there with ya!

You're right, that's sick and bendy, but ROFLMAO .... "'cause sick people are HIGH-larious!"

JASONZZZ

I know what you are saying, but I don't understand what you mean.

Legally, once a person is deceased. That person is no more, the property - including the body belongs to someone else. Be it family, or the state if lack of family. Aside from a will instructing for their wishes and probate court, whomever holds the property can do whatever they please (ok, except for the body, beyond a proper burial, cremation, or donating to science - there aren't much other choices)

So legally speaking, there isn't anything more to anyone but their body and their possessions.

But there is difference physically speaking, there are more to a person than just the body and its possessions. And not because of religion or of philosphy or of moral high grounds, but simply because they once were, they influenced, they are remembered and therefore they remember. It's not a simple transference of possession. Whether you liked them or hated them, their memories live on, because the living have a brain and its there.

Let's say its not a diary, it's grandma's locket or someother thing. Those things are barely worth the $1.02 that the crap its made out of. But we still associated grandma and all of our memories of her with it. So, physically speaking, there is more intrinsic value than just the physical value. I think there is more to it than just saying:
"Aw, too bad, you are dead. Screw you and the horse you rode in on. Now I am going to tear thru all of your personal stuff and secrets to find out what you were really thinking privately all by yourself."

Since the dead cannot, the living must. I don't consider the dead "people". I show nothing but respect to the bodies and posessions, but they are only objects, and somebody needs to be responsible for them.

If they didn't have the right in the first place, what transpired that made them gain that right?

I'm really fighting the urge to be sarcastic here.

My thinking is that if it was private, it should be private.

If they safeguard it well enough, it will continue to be so.

And you can thinking about the person as they are without boarding up the room or tearing thru the diary too.

I was only giving a couple of extreme, real-life examples. Don't read too much into these.

It's difficult not to personify the dead. The closer you are to them, the more this will happen.
