I own the two Firefly visual companions and the Serenity one too. On the last page of those books, there's an advertisement for more books based on our big damn heroes "coming soon". I'm not into fanfic, but I would read some Joss-approved professionally written and published books with our BDH's...

So the question is...WHERE THE HELL ARE THEY?! I've had my companions for a good long while now, and have heard NOTHING on the front of Firefly expanded 'verse type books. Does anyone know what happened?

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

The only advertisement I'm seeing that isn't for the other visual companion or the novelization of the movie is one that looks like it's for the comic three-parter 'Those Left Behind' which has been out for some time now. There is another three-parter that was recently released called 'Better Days.' Graphic novels are so far the only 'expanded universe' type things to be written/approved by Joss. There are also two books of essays based on the verse called 'Finding Serenity' and 'Serenity Found.'

You may say I'm a dreamer. But I'm not the only one.

And I own them all, as well as "The Psychology of Joss Whedon."

I might have an older copy of them, but mine has an ad for the Serenity novel, and says "keep a look out for more novels based on the Serenity characters" or something along those lines (in the same ad...and this was awhile back and I haven't heard any new developments...

there was a deal at the time the movie was made that there would be the novelization, plus two more original tie in novels. concepts were submitted but never approved by Joss (for reasons highly speculated upon but never confirmed) and the contract time limitation lapsed. therefore the novels that they were advertising never got green lighted and thus there are no firefly tie in novels.

I got this story directly from Keith DeCandito himself (the author of the Serenity novelization, and who also submitted new novel ideas for consideration to fulfill the deal). You can ask him this question, but be prepared to barely controlled anger at not being able to write the story idea that he'd really love to and see the 'verse continue in print. Fowl language may or may not be involved in his response :)

Shiny stuff for not a lot o coin:

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

EarthGirl is right, there was a novel submission by Steve Brust and one by Keith DeCandido. Steve wrote a whole novel and submitted for approval whereas Keith submitted several chapters I believe. Neither was ever approved by Joss who has final say so they never saw the light of day. Well, Keith's didn't anyway.

Steve's novel, or should I say "fanfic" is called "My Own Kind of Freedom" and he posted it on his site for download here:

Give it a read. Excellent book and I think Steve was dead on with the characters, the feel of the 'verse and kept true to the story. I wish Joss would have approved it.

I'm not into fanfic...but I'll give it a shot if they were considering him as the legitimate author. Thanks much, even though the news was depressing...

Our own ScrewtheAlliance (a professional writer in real life) has posted several novel length stories in the Blue Sun Room that are very good. "Kaylee's Lament", and "The Treasure of Lei Fong Wu" are complete and he's in the middle of posting "Unfinished Business". Several people have commented that they print out each chapter and put it in a notebook so I guess that meets the criteria for a book.
