Roberto Orci, and Alex Kurtzman are the writers for the film. I just found this out. They have such hits as the Transformers(which to me seemed like a jumbled mess with good action) and Alias(which I never liked).

How can these relative unknowns helm one of Sci-Fi's biggest franchises? I'm worried, and I feel if your a Trekkie you should also have concern

As far as Transformers goes, I think that was more the director than anything else. I was never interested in Alias, but I've been watching Fringe, and it's actually pretty good. So I'm keeping an open mind about Star Trek.

Love Fringe, but I wouldn't woory too much about Star Trek. The first movie was a complete disaster and they made several more (I think 5 in all).

There's nothing that can sink that franchise.

Shiny! Let's be bad guys!

This is the eleventh Star Trek movie. Add that to the five live action series and the animated series, and that's a lot of sci-fi. You can't kill Star Trek.

For anyone that's confused about it, this movie isn't throwing out the old Star Trek. Spock is going back in time.

Worried? Lord, yes - it hasn't written in months and has stopped returning my calls!

But seriously, I've seen a couple of eps of Fringe, and its most glaring weakness to me so far is the writing...though rightly or wrongly, I kinda see it as an attempt (along with Eleventh Hour) to rehash X-Files, and am therefore likely prejudiced. I like the characters, though...

It was like that when we got here!

Relative unknowns? Kurtzman and Orci both have careers as writers and producers that go back a decade! If nothing else, both were writers/producers for ALIAS, which had a very successful 5-year run.

That's more experience than Joss Whedon had when he started the Buffy the Vampire Slayer show (and certainly more than he had when he wrote the movie) and more than George Lucas had when he started one of the most influencial sci fi franchises in history.

I think the new Star Trek movie has great potential. Of course I've said the same thing about the previous 10 Star Trek movies. This one is special due to the new cast. We shall see.

Ah...Hercules & Xena, Cleo & Jack. How I yearn for those Saturdays of the recent past where you could spend all day watching some good entertainment.

STORYMARK

I'm not worried about it from a creative standpoint. While I disliked Transformers, I attribute that more to Bay. But I've liked most of Kurtzman/Orci/Abrams stuff I've seen. I liked Mission Impossible 3, and I loved Alias and Lost (two of my favorite shows of the last decade). And I like everything I've heard/read them say about the project.

I also like the cast a lot, and am encouraged by what has leaked out from those who have seen it, or parts of it (Kevin Smith and Harry Knowles, mainly).

My worry is on the financial side. If this movie is a bomb, it could be the end of Trek for a good long time. And with the money they've put into it, it has to not only be a bigger hit than any prior Trek film, it has to be a bigger hit by several magnitudes. The budget on this one is higher than the total box-office take for any of the other Trek films, and it's going to have to make somewhere in the vicinity of $300 million to just break even.

So, while I think it'll be a good movie, the chances of it being successfull enough to reinvigorate the franchise are not great.

You're forgetting enough novels to fill a library. Star Trek is going nowhere.

And no, I'm not worried about this. Yeah, Transformers let me down (even beyond the horrific directing, the writing was sub-fanfic level and didn't deliver on the "new and sophisticated" "Transformers as you've never seen them" promises), but one mediocre script does not invalidate someone's entire career.

Orci and Kurtzman's approach to the Trek mythos seems to mirror my own preferences (they consider the novels to be as legitimately canon as the TV/films, which is the coolest thing anyone involved with film has ever said --usually they say "frack it; if it's not on-screen I don't care. Who actually reads stuff anyway? Hurr hurr."[*]).

I mean, I'm not holding my breath for Enterprise shout-outs, but a cameo by a well-disguised Connor Trinear as someone who most certainly is not Charles "Trip" Tucker III, but who has some. . . familiarity with human/Vulcan hybrids isn't totally impossible.

(* Well, okay, maybe not just like that, but that's how they usually act. Lucas, I'm looking at you )

I'm not at all worried about Star Trek, or writers Orci and Kurtzman. Yes, they did write Transformers, but I would put far more blame on the director than the writers for that mess. Do you blame Joss for the Buffy movie, or Alien Resurrection? He was the writer on those movies!

Teamed with J.J. Abrams directing, they've had better success. Mission Impossible III was easily the best of the series. Only Tom Cruise's psycho meltdown kept people out of seats for that movie. Even Paramount could figure out where the blame was there. They cut ties with Cruise, and gave the writers and director of MI-III their biggest franchise, Star Trek.

I think Star Trek is in good hands. It was time for new blood, and Paramount found a team that has a proven track record of working well together.

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

At least we get another Star Trek movie!

And I doubt it will suck as bad as the last X-Files movie. That was a waste of 2 hours....

You're already biased and have most likely made up your mind based on preconceptions, so why bother?

But would anyone have thought that Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a good idea coming from a guy who wrote a few episodes of "Roseanne" and the TV adaptation of "Parenthood"? Or such "hits" as "Titan AE," "Alien: Resurrection" and "Atlantis"? (Personally, I enjoy all of those movies, but they're not exactly in a class about the MI3, Transformers, and The Island).

If you hate "Alias", there's a decent change you're gonna dislike anything that Abrams and his gang do, but holding that against future projects is the same as the folks who didn't like BtVS saying that they wouldn't bother with "Firefly" because they hated Whedon's first show.

I just said I'm worried about the Star Trek film. I will still most certainly go see it when it's released. They may shine, and make the best Trek movie to date. I'm not a fan of their previous works, but I'm not biased...just skeptical.
