The scene(s) that defines Mal as one truly bad hombre! A bad-ass hardcore moment that shows how tough Mal can be.

Here's mine:

Out of Gas-The scene where he get's shot in the belly by the hijacker, get's up and turns the tables on them.

Now most people would go into shock and fade away when shot in the belly, but not Mal. Hardcore Browncoat

I'd say the scene in the Pilot episode of Firefly where Mal storms into the cargo hold and shoots the Federal Agent without a second glance. Truly a bad hombre.

I've got to go with shooting the surrendering Alliance guy in the BDM. He's so cold and does it in front of everyone. Scares them a little, too. Well, probably a lot.

Nah.

Out of Gas when he slam-pinned Wash to the infirmary wall and told him how it was gonna be.

Even Jayne flinched.

I would say it was in War Stories during the whole time Mal was being tortured.

Hmm, that's a tough one. Aside from the ones already posted, I'd have to say that the part in Heart of Gold when he pistol-whips Burgess was pretty BA.

In reply to your signature Reaverman I think the quote from Time Bandits explains God and Evil the best, and that was when God told the little boy it all had something to do with free will.

That and the scene in The Train Job when, rather than wast time arguing and trying to convince him, Mal kicks Crow into the engine and turns to the next man.

those two scenes are the reason he decided to buy Firefly.

Now for myself...

@ Rallem:

*sigh* I'm not going to get into yet another theological discussion here, 'cause that's a long road to nowhere. Suffice to say that we disagree and that we'll probably never change each others' minds, so there's no point in discussing it in the first place. [/debate}

I think Mal's most BA moment was the one at the end of Arial, where he knocks Jayne out rather violently, imprisons him in the airlock, gives him (and the Audience) the strong impression he's going to kill him, Makes it very clear who's boss on Serenity and how people are expected to behave, then lets him out and more or less tells him not to do it again, knowing full well that it ain't ever going to happen again.this scene establishes Jayne's respect/fear of Mal in all episodes that follow, including the BDM. I also thought he was pretty BAd Ass in the Sword fight scene in Shindig and the conversation that follows. He plays dirty, wins and has zero remorse. Then there's the scene at the end of Our Mrs Reynolds where he stomps into Saffrons home and hits her hard. I love it when Mal's dark bits escape...just as you get lulled into thinking he's not that bad and he's starting to relax, something pushes him into the dark zone, and we are reminded that he is someone never to be messed with...mind you, he didn't actually kill Jayne, Atherton, or Saffron...so what does that say about him? maybe a) jayne is too good a resource to waste while he can be controlled, b) Killing Atherton would bring him more unwanted attention c) he really likes Saffron on some levels, and probably enjoys the challenge of dealing with her...or maybe he sees that she's just like him.

I second that..

Here's my favourite from the BDM.. Basically, when Mal is bluffing paralysis, and he whaps the Operative in the throat. The amount of pain that he inflicted to disable the Operative doesn't necessarily make him badass.. Or vice versa. ('Cause we know how Mal just keeps getting to his feet.) It's the fact that his 'belief' was stronger than that of The Operative's.

In "Those Left Behind" there is a flashback battle scene (I never noticed it until recently) where Mal is the only Independent still standing and firing off shots; maybe not a BA moment, but definitely a defining one.

Funny, the first scene that came to mind was in Train Job, when he tells the Sheriff, "I don't believe he does [have a choice]." Knowing what that means to him and his crew to cross someone like Niska, that takes a truly bad-ass, tough, unflinchable hombre to do the right thing in that circumstance. A lesser man would have easily rationalized keeping the loot and going through with the deal.

WHORINGSTORIES

I think the true badass Mal is in 'Out Of Gas', when he orders Wash on the bridge. His wife may be dying -which is just as hard for Mal as it is for Wash- but there are things that have to be done to give the others a chance to survive.

For ME, it's when Mal shoots that surrendering Alliance guy on Haven- the whole crew, even Jayne, takes major pause on that one. Mal was NOT frakkin' around.

Surely his most hardcore moment is in Heart of Gold when he sleeps with Nandi?

I'd say that moment on Haven, but NOT the shooting of the purple belly. I think that bit is incidental to the big bad.

It's when Mal shows that once he's made his mind about a thing, he'll not let anyone stand in his way. Even family:

Quote:

"...So I hear a word out of any of you that ain't helping me out or taking your leave, I will shoot you down.

Get to work."

I get the impression that he has the potential to turn on everyone.

A better part from that is when he's chasing after the guy after the shootout.

But I agree that "Do you want to meet the real me now?" Probably is his most BA moment, as it's the one that comes to mind most when I think Mal.
