My favorite: it starts the series, and colors everything that follows (and makes the series so smar t and complex and moving)--

When Mal looks up, in that moment of battle, and sees what he thought would be his angels of deliverance, but which are in fact angels of death raining down destruction. In that moment Mal loses his faith (clearly something he has held despite great hardships), and we see what Joss calls in the "Serenity" commentary "a man who has lost everything." What an amazing hero for a TV narrative--someone who has lost everything he believes in, but has somehow held to a system of honor and decency in spite of that. And what an amazing start for a TV show!!!!!

"Well, my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle. . . ."

That part is so sad! It was amazing and beautiful and sad. Almost like the end of "Of Mice and Men" *sniff* poor Lennie.

So many, where to begin...

Here's a bunch.

The funny:

Mal and Zoe convincing Jayne to switch sides in "Out of Gas."

MAL: Use of a s-what?

MAL: Mercy is the mark of a great man. (stabs Atherton) Guess I'm just a good man. (stabs him again) Well, I'm all right.

ZOE: Jayne, this is something the captain has to do himself.
MAL: NO! NO, IT'S NOT!

JAYNE: I'll be in my bunk.

JAYNE: We applied the cortical electrodes, but were unable to get a neural reaction from either patient.

RIVER: I can kill you with my brain.

RIVER: They say the snow on the roof is too heavy. They say the ceiling will cave in. His brains are in terrible danger.
ZOE: River, honey, he's putting the hair away.
RIVER: It doesn't matter. It'll still be there. Waiting.

BOOK: It is, however, somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps.

RIVER: "Day" is a vestigial mode of time measurement based on solar cycles. It's not applicable. (beat) I didn't get you anything.

The warm, fuzzy/make me cry:

Any scene of the crew sitting around the dinner table, talking, laughing, eating.

MAL: We're still flying.
SIMON: It's not much.
MAL: It's enough.

MAL: Everybody dies alone.

MAL: We'll never be under the heel of the nobody ever again. No matter how long the arm of the Alliance might get... we'll just get us a little further.

MAL: Y'all gonna be here when I wake up?
BOOK: We'll be here.

Mal looking upon Serenity for the first time.

SIMON: No, mei mei. Time to wake up.

JAYNE: Make something up. Don't tell 'em what I did.

SIMON: Why'd you come back for us?
MAL: You're on my crew.

JAYNE (ruminating on the mudder dying to save him): It don't make no kind of sense.

The jump cut of Inara looking sadly away from her client in "Serenity."

Inara crying in "Heart of Gold."

RIVER: River's not on the ship. They didn't want her here, but she couldn't make herself leave, so she melted. Melted away.

RIVER:Permission to come aboard?
MAL: You know, you ain't quite right.
RIVER: It's the popular theory.
MAL: Get on in there. Give your brother a thrashing for messing up your plan.
RIVER: He takes so much looking after...

The warm, flirty glance Mal and Inara exchange at the dinner table in "Out of Gas," as Mal teases her: "So there is kissing?"

Mal keeping Wash alive as they're both tortured by Niska.

Mal defending Inara's honor by punching Atherton.

MAL
You think following the rules will buy you a nice life, even if the rules make you a slave. Don't take his offer.

INARA What?

MAL: Don't do it. Because in the case it happens it means he's the fella that killed me and I don't like fellas that kill me, just in general. I said before I don't have call to stop you, and that's true, but anyways, don't.

The eerie:

RIVER: No power in 'verse can stop me.

RIVER: Two by two, hands of blue.

The Blue Hands killing officer McGuinness.

River's flashes into the crew's thoughts in OIS.

MAL: You wanna meet the real me now?

Okay, I've gotta stop or I'll just wind up posting every word in every FF script. Besides, time spent posting here is time I don't have to watch the show.

All of 'Objects In Space'. From River standing on the railings, to the Alliance/a lion mix-up, to "I am the ship", to "Well, here I am".

"Trash" - Mal naked, sitting on a rock, in the desert. "Yep. That went well."

Zoe's "Oh" in "War Stories".

Not using sound for the scenes in space.

Kaylee. *Sigh*.

The structure of "Out Of Gas".

One scene - for the life of me I can't remember which episode (I'm still waiting for R2 DVDs in April) - a long shot of the desert where Serenity has just risen up from behind a cliff and is hovering in a heat haze with the crew standing in front of her.

From "Shindig", where the posh "ladies" have just slagged off Kaylee's dress. The old man (Murphy) strolls up and says to the leader:

"Why Banning Miller. What a vision you are in your
fine dress. It must have taken a dozen slaves a
dozen days to get you into that getup.

Course your daddy tells me it takes the space of
a schoolboy's wink to get you out of it again."

Makes me howl every time.

What makes you think Jubal gets killed off? :O)

Think about whose plan stranded Jubal.. Watch the end of the show again and observe Jubal's ship take off by itself. Whouldn't it be just like River to have programmed that ship to pick Jubal up at some pre-determined time along his trajectory? I think it fits given the non-lethal bent of the episode; River is trying to show how not dangerous she is (no touching guns).. and ironically at the same time proves she is perhaps more deadly than ever. :)

Summed up Mal/Inara:
Inara: What did I say about barging into my shuttle?
Mal: That it was manly and impulsive?
Inara: Right, except that I said, don't.

Classic! Now if I could just remember which ep that was from! hahaha

2. Mal with the wrench in Ariel. That was the first time in a looooOOOOOoooong time that I was actually surprised at something in a tv show (or movie) for that matter. They totally didn't telegraph it from a mile out *AND* it wasn't totally out of character (which is a lame way of surprising the audience).

Too many more to mention. Why was this show cancelled again? Oh yeah, FOX SUX. Right, we're clear, thanks.

Doran, I think Jubal said that like a person of such confidence that he was suprised to be about to use his ship recall control to rescue himself.
Make an escape, yes. Retreive a thief, likely. Rescue himself from open space? Never. But, well, here I am.

For my part, I wouldn't discount Jubal Early because he was Paul Robinett on Law&Order. That made his (excellent) preformance all the more highlarious to me.

Their original mechanic’s name, Bester - was his first name Alfred? :wink

Early: “Does that seem right to you?”

Wash: “There’s obeying going on right under my nose!”

Mal sitting naked on the rock. "Yep. That went well."

River: “No power in the 'verse can stop me.”

Book: “It is, however, somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps.”

Mal to Jayne: "Well, my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle."

Jayne’s reaction to the mudder kid who jumped in front of the shotgun to save him.

River about the the Bible: "Noah's Ark is a problem."

Zoe: "It's OK, River; he's putting the hair away."
River: "It will still be there ... waiting."

Book reminding Mal, “The SPECIAL hell ...”

Wash with his dinosaurs: “We will call this land ... This Land .... “

Zoe: “I ain’t so afraid of losing something that I’m not goin’ to try to have it.”

I would guess coming up w/ your own Fireflygasms.

I would just like to say how very cool it is to have Joss reading this thread, not only post in it, but to tell us that it reminds him of why he is working so hard for this movie.

I would encourage everyone to keep coming up w/ those Fireflygasms, and to check out the letter writing campaign to Universal in this thread:

http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=3578

I think we owe it to Joss, ourselves, the show, and the cast to do all we can to get the movie onto the big screen.

First: Crow getting a up close tour of the left engine nacelle.

Best: A toss up between "Dear Diary: Today I was pompous and my sister was crazy... Today we were captured by hill-folk and never heard from again and it was the best day ever!" Man, I still laugh like heck over that one.

and

River's "mind-reading" in OIS. Especially Mal, Inara, and Book's deepest thoughts. Mal and Inara's weren't unexpected, but Mal's just gimme the jibblies. Made me despair. Book's though, huh, there's something to chew on for a spell.

and Absolutely the best thing ever on the extras from the DVD commentary track:

Well, I'm all right. - Mal

Most of my favorites have been mentioned upthread, but I have to second Mal's "Well, I'm all right." in Shindig.

Some new ones for the thread; from Serenity: "Right... we win." - Mal

"Sweetie, we're crooks. If everything were right, we'd be in jail." - Wash (and "stealing from the rich, selling to the poor" in Ariel), hell, almost all his lines.

"Oh yeah, this is gonna go great." - Zoë

"Hey! Is there, is there a reward?" - Mal

In Shindig: "And I never back down from a fight." - Mal
"Yes, you do! You do all the time!" - Inara

Zoë's "Cause it's a deathtrap." - actually, pretty much all of Oog.

From Ois: Zoë's "Anyone we can't spare" and Summer's delivery of "It's the popular theory.", and, and...

When I get the region 2 DVDs I'm sure to remember more.

SHSSAY

In 'Serenity': When Mal kicks the cover off the the cryo-chamber that River was being transported in and you see her lying curled up amongst all this mist....It was a very haunting image and all Mal had to say was: "Huh."

In 'Shindig': Mal has Etherton laying on the ground, but refuses to kill him. He says, "Mercy is the mark of a great man." Then he promptly stabs Etherton and says, "I guess I'm just a good man." This is followed by another stab. "Well, I'm alright."

In 'War Stories': River looks out at three men stalking Serenity for no more than a second, takes Kaylee's gun, closes her eyes, and shoots them all as if it were the easiest thing in the world. Then she looks at Kaylee, smiles, and says "No power in the 'verse can stop me."

In 'Trash': Mal is sitting naked in a barren desert all alone at the beginning of the episode and all he says is "Yeah....that went well."

In 'Objects in Space': Jayne is sleeping throughout the entire ruckus going on in Serenity in this episode. There's a point where a loud noise finally wakes him up. He sits up, reaches behind him, and pulls the blanket off his guns in what the viewer believes is in preperation to enter the fight...but he just rolls over, covers himself up with the blanket, and goes back to sleep!

In 'Serenity': When Book first met Kaylee, he showed her the unknown contents of a box, which managed to get him on Serenity as a passenger. When Kaylee goes to the common room and takes a strawberry out of the box like its a precious commodity....

In 'Messages': River is trying to eat something tied from the end of a stick and is obviously having a difficult time doing so. "This food is problematic." Also, when Jayne pulls out that hat his mom sent to him...and actually put it on.^^ Lastly, the scene at the end, where they're delivering the body to the folks and Kaylee takes Simon's hand.

In Objects in Space: Jubal says to Simon, "You oughtta be shot. Or stabbed. Lose a leg. Know what kind of pain you're dealing with. They make a psychiatrist get psychoanalyzed before they allow him to practice, but they don't make a surgeon get cut on. Does that seem right to you?"

"Two by two, hands of blue." -River Tam

RUXTON

Not yet mentioned (as of late last night), my favorite scene of all:

In "Serenity," just after the ship spins its engines and escapes the Reavers, the absolutely awesome effect of Serenity climbing into deep space, with the tremendous blast of its engine and the receding planet behind it. Chills!

Infinite thanks to Joss Whedon, the cast, and crew for having given us so much rich art and so many fine moments. (Especially Summer.)

HKCAVALIER

I think it's in "Ariel" but I could be wrong. It's the moment when Book is talking to Mal about all the things Simon is doing for his sister and Mal says, "Yeah, he's my hero," in that weird little voice. Completely hilarious. In any ordinary tv show that moment would have been totally "out of character" but it is SO utterly Mal to do that. It's the kind of thing that happens in real life all the time but in tv?

(Not so much.)

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

FIREFLYWILDCARD1

Let's see, here are the moments that struck me the most in Firefly:

1) Right after Mal shoots Tracey in "The Message". You can see how much that hurt Mal to do that.

2) In "Serenity" when Mal pulls the Kaylee's dead prank on Simon and Wash, Zoe and Jayne are all in on it.

3) In "Serenity" when Mal shoots the Fed. I love the way he's so calm and cool about it.

4) In "Objects in Space" when River floats back down to Serenity and the whole conversation she has with Mal.

5) In "Bushwhacked" when River and Simon are hanging on the outside of Serenity and their facial expressions and differing reactions to being out in space.
