I saw on another thread ( http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=2973) that some of you all out there are interested in a Jayne hat.

I am, too. In fact, I knitted one, and would be happy to make a cottage industry out of it. (I need /something/ to do on the train home every day!)

So, if you want one, here's what I need from you:

1. Help with *exact* desin. I have guessed a bit from watching the show, but the lights are dim. Just want to make sure we're all on the same page before anything gets coporeal.

Here's my understanding:
> Shape: basic earflap-wintertime hat design
> Colors: large reddish-orange bottom stripe, a pure orange stripe in the middle, and a yellow-orange stripe on top. The pom-pom on top is made of the pure orange and yellow-orange yarns. Reddish-orange may be in evidence--but again, the light is dim. We may want to assume it is there.
> Materials: generic yarn, nothing particular.

2. Reimbursement for materials and shipping (if it starts to get expensive). I don't know what it will cost--probably just a few bucks, especially if a bunch of people are interested--I can buy in bulk. It doesn't weigh much, of course.

That being said, this is just about the easiest thing ever to knit. If any novice knitters want to try it, I can talk patterns and whatnot--really, this is like day two in knitting class. (Not that you need a class--you could pretty much figure it out by yourself, even if you were stuck on some third-class planet with a bunch of sick kids and no one to teach you.)

So, any takers? We could also design some Blue Sun winter headwear. Why not?

(My husband stuck hay on his when it was done. )

I would definitely go for a Jayne hat- You get the color scheme down, and the materials cost (and shipping and what-not) and let us know where to order 'em-

He looked bigger when I couldn't see him.

Okay--I'll start looking for some yarn Jayne's mother would buy.

In the meantime, send me your suggestions. What do you all think--natural fibers or synthetic? Could really go either way.

Anyone have a way to contact the fashion designer for the show? Maybe she'd have some insights on this and other Jayne-hat-related matters.
----(later)----
Maybe I'm crazy--I just wrote Shawn Trpcic a letter.

I guess it doesn't really matter if you use natural fibers or synthetic. Unfortunately I don't know any information for the fashion designer.

Don't worry--I already wrote her (see note above). Sent it off today c/o Mutant Enemy.

In the meantime, I'll get shopping.

As for the natural vs. synthetic fiber question, it's really more show culture spelunking more than it is a design element. Regardless of what the hat was really made of, the question is, what would Jayne's mom have used?

That aside, I can just look for whatever looks good.

Miss cool lady! YOU are so cool. I want a Jayne hat. Usually when I buy something from soneone, mofel parts, clothes, etc, I do materials + 5% extra. is this fine? I would glady pay for a hat to survive the blistering cold michigan winters :( that also looks dead sexy and any man would know you have no fear!

It seems that natural fibers would look most like it. Jayne's is kinda rustic.

We love the idea of Jayne hats!!! I am interested in learning how to knit but it's just not going to happen soon, maybe next year. Anyway, there's two of us here that would be willing to wear those hats daily - or almost daily, I have another favorite hat...wouldn't want one to get jealous of the other you know... Just let us know how much and all that good stuff.

Just to add my two cents too, I would vote for the natural fibers, it looks like wool (or a synthetic made to look like wool...).

Thanks much!!!

Wow--I'm glad to know I'm not just shooting in the dark here.

Okay, here's the deal then: I've posted the best picture I have of the hat on my website (link below). (I've *just* started setting it up, so don't expect to find much else there.) If any of you have a better image of it, let me know and I can better approximate the thing. I can pause the DVD, but I don't know how to save a still on my computer.

I can post knitting patterns on my website, too--if any of you are so inclined. It really is ridiculously easy.

I'll go shopping for yarn this weekend. It's hard to approximate the colors, since they're not really popular, but I think I can get them. (The one I did for my husband made do with some colors that weren't as dead-on as I would like. Which is why I won't put a picture of *that* on my website. )

I'll be traveling for three weeks, which is a perfect time to knit. So I can try to do them all at once, and then send them out at the end of February. Which is really the only time I can do it, since I'll be in Asia for those three weeks. Unless any of you live in Asia?

Here's what I need from you:

Email me your name, address, and head size. If you want, you can just say "biggish" or whatever, but if you want guarantees the thing will fit, tell me the circumference of your head at the forehead. My email: f3k64@yahoo.com

Oh, and get it to me by January 28, if you want the hat done in this first batch.

I would think that natural would give a better look, but synthetic may be more cost effective. My experience with crocheting has been that synthetic yarn is generally cheaper than natural wool/fabric (for whatever stupid reason).

For a better look at the hat colors and such, you could try looking at the Easter egg. Adam wears the hat in that and the lighting is nice and bright.

I was thinking about Jayne's hats on the drive into work today. I suddenly realized that it is very intersting that Jayne wears hats in several episodes. After all, Joss states categorically that he intended that in this world the bad guys wear hats. I've seen it in print and he explains it again in the audio commentaries.

Does that seem right to you?

In my humble opinion, it is as simple as this...Jayne only wears hats some of the time. And he is only "bad" some of the time.

Around 22:05 on the DVD version is the scene when they're ripping apart the crate with the body (after the police hail them), and jayne's got the hat on in full view, there's a nice shot of it (see the whole hat in good light), only I can't capture for some reason. (right as he says "magical wish-granting planks")

then in the infirmary: these are when he steps into the non-blue light:
24:03 - when he's about to get the pan
24:25 - when he's holding the pan and then walking to the sink (here you only see the bottom well)

Hope this helps.

Not on the ones I've been doing for most people, but email me at f3k64@yahoo.com and we can talk.

Why does he wear a hat? Duh. Jayne is *pretty* evil. That's why we love him. He's just also dim.

Anyway, the FULL PATTERN is up at my website. I'd post it here, but it's pretty long, cause I'm all verbose 'n' stuff. (Not 'cause it's hard.)

Just email me whenever. Most it'll cost for materials and shipping is ten bucks--probably less. And I won't be done with this batch for another month, so no hurry on the change. I won't add you to my list til you email me though.

Well, yeah--except there are almost no good Jayne-colored synthetics at my local craft stores. They're all hunter-orange...that really bright stuff. And I hate ordering colors online--never know what you'll get. Plus you want it to hang right--and have that authentically scratchy cowboy feel.

BUT I luckily came across some discontinued virgin wool that was perfect--and on sale. More info is on my website (I won't bore you all with the details).

Sorry, Mike. Yes, I did. :)

Anyway, does anyone have an opinion on the colors? Is there red at the top or is it just shadow? We seem to have a difference of opinion.

And does anyone have a really clear picture of it?

Here's how to get the best look at Jayne's Hat.
It's the easter egg in the DVD set where Adam sings the Ballad of Jayne...
1. Insert Disc 4.
2. From the main menu, select Special Features.
3. Select More.
4. Highlight, but do not select, "Joss Sings the Firefly Theme".
5. Press Left-Arrow, highlighting the ornament above.
6. Press SELECT.

Yeah, but first you need the DVD and a DVD player. I'm sans both at the moment (on a long trip and stuck in a not-too-good hotel). Thanks to all y'all's proxy info, I'm back on track with online pictures.

But I really appreciate your help with the egg. I felt like a monkey banging on a rock trying to find the easter egg before I went on this trip. Will definitely get a good look when I get back (next week).

Which is when the hats are due. I swear, if being the only redhead white girl in Taipei weren't bad enough, I'm the redhead white girl /knitting/ a god-awful ugly orange and yellow hat. All the time. I am like a freak show over here. I hope y'all appreciate this--I sure do feel like an idiot. Honestly, I turn my head and I just see a bunch of eyes staring at me whenever I whip the thing out.

I'm a little behind schedule due to the color thing--I'll have to get the red stuff and knit like mad next week--but I'll try to start emailing you individually to mail 'em out the first week of March. I'll post a picture on my site then, too, so you can always back out if the full reality of wearing this hat publicly hits you.

Serenitynow, you are TOO funny! I laughed out loud through your whole post. And as for wearing the hat in public? I'll do it proudly! I've never really been one who cares about making a fool of myself. After all, I am the girl who carried a Carebear lunchbox for her entire Senior year...
