I know this seems a little out of place, but trust me, it fits here just fine. The other day, while having a discussion, one of my friends said that while they greatly appreciated and respected Christian Bale's acting talent, that they found it dofficult to believe that he was Bruce Wayne. In fact, she said that although some were better than others, so far, none have met her expectations. It was then that the idea was thrown out, even if it could never happen, that Nathan Fillion would make an excellent Bruce Wayne. It had never occured to me, but I agreed strongly. I could go on and on listing why I think so. But the point of this whole thing was that I wanted to hear what you all thought, and why you agree or disagree with this. Hey, we're allowed to dream, right?

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I disagree. I love Nathan and everything, but I can't see him as Bruce Wayne or Batman. I know he has talent, but I think it takes a very special insight into darkness to be Batman, and indeed his alter ego. Christian Bale has pulled both off admirably, in my opinion. While actors before him could really only do one side of the character, I can buy his portrayal of both. It's made me quite happy to see so many of the characters done right in the latest movies.

You may say I'm a dreamer. But I'm not the only one.

Oh, of course. I am in no way condemning his performance. Batman wears a mask, so it's easier (in my opinion) to play that side of the role. Bruce Wayne gets overlooked, because everyone wants to see Batman. I'm not sure what kind of Batman Nathan would make. But I the more I think about it, I'm thinking he could do a pretty good job with it. Both Mal and Alex Tully were roles where he played someone who was forced somewhere dark that they didn't want to go in the first place. They both mean business. They're both dark roles. I see a lot in common with Bruce Wayne there. I also can't help but compare the moment on the monorail where he refuses to save Ra's al Ghul, and I'm struck by the similarities between this kind of hero and Mal's "mercy is the mark of a great man..." exchange. It's hard to imagine how it would come off without seeing it, which is why we can only dream. At the same time, though, I respect your right to disagree. You made some good points.

Before Christian Bale was cast, I had hoped either he or Clive Owen would get the role.

I don't see Nathan as the martial arts master. More of small guns, small screwdriver type weaponry. The aristocratic layer of Bruce Wayne I haven't seen Nathan do yet. Nathan seems to me more the daytime soap, nighttime soap/gynecologist type. But have not seen him in everything, and his range may well be capable of the role.

However, Summer as Batgirl is another matter.

Didn't care for Maggie replacing Katie Holmes, but Jewel would have been cool in that role.

Ahhhh.. Alex Tully. Nathan could certainly pull off Wayne. I would love to see him try. For now, I'm stuck focusing on something between Bale and Michael Keaton(1st movie only) as satisfying both personalities.

I don't think it mattered who replaced her, as long as she was replaced. She was the only weak link in the first(re-imagined) film.

Not sure about Brucie, but you know, some of these guys have had real trouble convincing me they're Batman...

One of the few I WOULD buy as Batman would be Ron Pearlman - but I ain't too sure he could pull off Bruce Wayne so much...

Ironic, innit ?

Ron is fantastic as Hellboy, and was a joy as Beast, in "Beauty and the Beast(TV series)". But I can't buy him as Bruce. We all must stick to what we are good at.

I take it you haven't seen Nathan's evil preacher, Caleb, in the 7th season of "Buffy" who liked to snap the necks of "dirty girls." Talk about dark. @@@@@Shivers@@@@.

Mal and especially Alex Tully have very dark, driven sides. I remember more than several scenes where I was a bit worried about dark Alex would go to find his wife.

I've always pictured Bruce Wayne as a bright and intelligent man-about-town with a dual personality who's other half is quite dark (well duh). What I mean is in my mind I thought of him as a super sleuth with a deeply troubling mean streak and the great ability to hide it in his public persona - Bruce Wayne.

Christian Bale pulls off a solid credible perf (with the script he was given). Although I feel that the Batman/Joker angle of the movie was played up more so than the Bruce Wayne storyline, I thought all perfs were very solid - even Maggie Gylenhall (although I thought she was miscast, Katie Holmes was no better or worse either). But I'm not quite sure about Nathan playing Batman.

On the other hand, he could quite possibly pull off Bruce Wayne - he does have that dark brooding thing going for him. Given the right script, one that would highlight Bruce Wayne's storyline as much as the Batman story, then you may have a good vehicle for Nathan on your hands.

In my opinion, I don't think anyone has really captured BW (well as I have it pictured in my mind anyway). So no, I don't think Nathan would be right for the role.

By all means cast Nathan wherever and whenever he's castable...but for the sake of discussion, Viggo "Aragorn" Mortensen, anyone? He's already shown his skill at portraying the strong, silent, slightly disturbed type, not to mention the fighting and sword-play.

It was like Batman with a sword and no funny mask when we got here!

I don't see Nathan as Bruce. He just doesn't look the part to me. Christian Bale at least looks the part somewhat.

Well, I've only seen him in a couple roles. At the moment, I'm having trouble picturing him in that role, but that doesn't mean he couldn't do it. I'd just have to see it to know where he would be going with that one.

Granted, he's a lot easier to imagine as Batman than as Bruce Wayne. I think he'd do charming and urbane pretty well, but it might be a little too subdued...

My other "dark horse" nominee is Gary Coleman.

It was like that when we got here!
