Okay a bit of background. I'm a nurse on a psychiatric ward in my local hospital. So I got there a bit early for my 9 hr shift today and began to get the info on my patients. The report from the evening nurse stated that one of my patients had "a delusion in which he believed he was a character on a television show." At face value this was my most interesting patient to begin with. So I go in and introduce myself. "Hi I'm Dan and I'll be your nurse for this evening." After a glare of dissaproval he held out his hand and introduced himself, "My name is Malcom Reynolds now could you please tell me why in the hell I'm here and more importantly why I can't leave? I got work needs to be done." It took everything in me for my mouth not to drop open or squeal in delight. I mean obviously this is a sickness, but if you have one c'mon BELIEVING you're Mal...I can think of worse things to have. Having learned what actually brought him in from the report, I explained to him that he was there because he attemped to steal- wait for it- a cow from his neighbor's yard and then prodceeded to shoot at him when he got caught. His response to me was "I was simply taking my due I paid him right fair and he welched on the deal. Does that sound right to you?" I gotta admit I was impressed thus far I even excused the obvious misquotation. "still Mr. Reynolds (bit of joy in my heart to be able to say that) what you did was illegal and that's why you're here." "Something smells like (I don't know exacly what the next word was in chinese but I took it to mean shit) around here. Why am I in a hospital instead of a prison cell?" After another hard look at me and then around at the room he said "what are you planning to do to me?" At this point I did something stupid and glanced at the blue gloves on the rack completely out of instinct, and quickly responded. "you're a bit mixed up right now we're gonna do our best to set you right and send you on your way." he obviously caught me looking at the gloves and said, "I see anyone with these on (he grabbed one from the wall and threw it at my face)...and you'll have a dead body on your hands...and it won't be mine." At that point I made a mental note to make sure to pass along the message to the other staff to avoid blue gloves if at all possible. Okay there is so much more to say about the rest of my shift and I had to at least tell this much before hitting the hay but my eyes are literally falling as I type so I suppose the rest will have to wait until tomorrow.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Seriously, I do hope you all can help him.

And if you don't call him "Sir" don't make Badger's mistake and call him "Sergeant". Call him "Captain".

Oh and check in the corner for Zoe, she may shoot you...politely.

Someone better run tell Lawman...

...NOT !

There's anonymity aplenty in that post...I could stand to hear a little more...

Wonder if that Mal-contented fella " flashed his arse at the gorramned law " ?

Actually , I feel great about the fact that di-di at least picked the right Television Show about which to have his delusional episodes...Heck and Shoot , most of Us have done that...

'Course , Firefly is more A LEGEND than a TV show...You might oughta enter that in the 'notes'...

One more thing...Wonder what the neighbor was doing with a cow in his YARD ? Maybe he should be the one inside the secure Alliance facility...

poor guy...
and yeah, avoid the blue gloves because clearly this guy lacks the perspective of appreciating that you obviously have heard of Firefly/Serenity.
Maybe you can even make a note in his chart so that his doctor will know who, exactly, this character is ....

good luck with this one!

Poor guy. It's sad to think about what pushed his mind over the edge and brought him under this delusion in the first place. Then again, what a delusion to pick! Might also be a good idea to keep the ladies that look something like YoSafBridge away from him too.

Actually I think it is wrong to discuss this person's problem here because of patient confidentiality. I mean it is obvious this person is crazy because everyone knows I am the real Malcolm Reynolds.

I'm concerned about someone unfriendly to the flandom gettin' hold of this story, and usin' it to point out how "Firefly makes you crazy."

Browncoats have a pretty mixed rep, but our characteristic brand of crazy is the generally positive kind, not the kind that gets you taken off the streets for your own safety, and the safety of others.

The most appropriate way of dealing with this would not be to acknowledge the patient's delusion, let alone interact with him on that level. It'd just reinforce the problem.

Isn't Raycheetah's concern validated? There are people with malicious intent who come here, or this site wouldn't be getting hacked so often, and a little story like the one which started this thread can be blown out of proportion and start showing up on the regular News. On the other hand this could be the case where any exposure is good exposure for us fans, but I wonder how the creators of Firefly feel would about this type of exposure.

Well with this kind of delusion this poor guys is suffering from, he could believe that he's anyone like Luke Skywalker or Napoleon Bonaparte. This guy didn't go crazy because he was a fan of Firefly, he went crazy because there is something seriously wrong with him. He probably believes that he's Malcolm Reynolds because there is this subconscious part of him that needs to believe that he's that kind of strong, independent character. Someone like him forty years ago might have thought that he was John Wayne.

Well, that's quite clear, to thinkin' folks. However, somebody who cared to could spin it otherwise, and there are always folks who love to spread ill news.

And, no matter how topical it may be to this board, it don't hardly seem respectful to the patient involved to drag the particulars out in public, even without namin' names and such. Sure his family wouldn't care for it. I know I wouldn't, if it was somebody I cared about.

Just sayin'.

Nah, the press doesn't normally publish stories like these. This kind of delusion happens a bit more often than you think. (Although, it's still a tiny bit.) On the other hand, it could be worse. He could have believed he was a Klingon or Tolkien elf and only speak in the respective language. If so, that means the hospital would most likely have to employ a translator specifically to treat that person. (I once heard of a case where the patient only spoke in elvish, but could understand English just fine.) At least this guy is only cursing in Chinese on occasion.

Dan, I hope you guys will be able to help him.

I was thinking of that movie by Tom Hanks called Monsters and Mazes or something like that where it played on the paranoia of Dungeons and Dragons and how it will brain wash the children.

The only reason that I can think of some delusional person making the news is if they do some sort of major destruction like go on a shooting spree or burn down a building. People are checked into mental hospitals all the time. The press isn't going to go fishing for stories there.

I wasn't talking about the news media; there're plenty of folks online, for example, who will happily seize on and proliferate (and embellish) any story they think would make "interesting" grist for the mill.

That still takes a back-seat to respect the circumstances of someone with a mental illness, no matter how that illness manifests itself.

I really don't know. It would definitely be an amusing story to have pop up on the news, and it would get more people into the show, because you wouldn't know what he was talking about unless you're a fan yourself...

Okay, so the guy has some issues, and I wasn't thinking that far, but don't you think it would've reached the news anyway? Cuz there's always a way to find things, whether it be through this site or the hospital records themselves.
