browncoat opinions on stargate sg-1 series wanted

i am thinking of giving stargate sg-1 a try, but honestly, i wasn't too impressed by a few episodes i semi-watched on tv, and the original movie was just "so-so" imo (can't stand roland emrich, since he's a shlockmeister with a big budget). i don't really enjoy star trek type scifi shows where it's sort of "visit alien planet, get into conflict with alien menace, resolve conflict and learn a moral lesson". in fact, i really like the fact that there are no aliens in firefly and that human interaction is realistically messy and entangled, and not a bunch of "elite squad" military caricicature bs. also, i dislike cheesiness in scifi, defined by me as bad effects, costumes, acting, dialogue, etc., as well as overly utopian plotlines (star trek, a lot of babylon5). basically, BSG and firefly are the only recent purely scifi shows i've enjoyed. anyone care to evaluate stargate sg-1 along these parameters? i know it likely can't touch BSG and firefly in terms of depth and quality, but i am hoping it is worth a try and doesn't suck.

Yes, as much as I have a soft spot for some of his films, Roland Emmerich is a schlockmeister, and Stargate is a subpar movie. The series is much, much better. I own the series on DVD, and while it is defiantly nowhere close to BSG or Firefly, it is enjoyable. While much of it is the go to new planet and encounter whatever, there is a basic story-arch running through the series. And thankfully it doesn't have the utopian uppityness that makes me hate Star Trek with a passion (Humans acting human! How quaint!).
I would describe the series of having a campy feel to it. Yes it is a tad cheesy, but enjoyable and delivered with a sense of humor. My suggestion would be to rent the first season off netflix (or something), and if you don't like it, at least you tried it.

Yeah, with all due respect to the late Don Davis, I don't hold Stargate up there with Firefly, it's somewhere around DS9, except I love DS9 more because I grew up with it lol. But Stargate... if you take it as a bit of a sci-fi parody, you'll like it a lot more. Because... well what I don't like about it is that in a lot of ways it IS what we don't like about Star Trek, the feel of "we follow these characters because they are Very Important"... but taken as a comedy of both sci-fi and the X-Files (because the stargate folks ARE a government conspiracy) it's quite enjoyable. But like it or not you at some point realize that for all their pretending to a dark side and gray areas, they are still saving the Earth and they have "people," ya know, redshirts, as backup. So it bugs me, the militariness, but on the other hand, if you take it as a "if a bunch of folks from right now went to other planets and it turned out that the villains were as cheesy and eeeevil as human sci fi movies and they all miraculously spoke english" show, then it should work. :)

The trick is that SG-1 (both the series and the in-universe team) are self-aware enough to see the cheese and enjoy it. As Wash would say, "wacky fun."

There are aliens, but most of the beings the team encounters are human (seeded from Earth), near-human (the Jaffa are a subspecies of homo sapiens), or in human form (the Goa'uld are parasites that inhabit human bodies). All of it very well-planned and integrated into the script (it's not just to save makeup budget, it actually makes sense). Though the "speaking English" thing is kinda irritating. Kinda defeats the point of having a linguist on the team.

There're also Simpsons references. And "kawoosh" used as a technical term. And the token alien of the group becoming a Star Wars fan (and getting his own apartment).

There's a whole subplot throughout the series (starts in S2 or 3 IIRC) about someone making a TV show called "Wormhole Extreme," which is based on the Stargate program (which parodies not only their own show, but every other sci-fi show under the sun, Firefly included. It's hilarious).

It also has one of the only instances of a commanding officer supporting character not being an inept, self-righteous blowhard (see any Admiral in Star Trek [except for Ross, who is one of the other cases]), played by the late Don S. Davis in perhaps his greatest role.

I'm not a huge fan of SG-1, but I'll watch it on occasion.

I prefer "Stargate: Atlantis" because it's loaded with more quirky characters imho. I never leave watching that show without Sheppard or McKay making me laugh.

Darksiders can keep their cookies. We have better writers.

Grrr. Argghh.

Really can't wait to see Cap'n Tightpants sing!

I really like it, not Firefly, but good in its own way.

It also consistently gets better, writing and acting wise the further into the series you get,

Stargate Atlantis, is really good because of this fact... the writers have evolved the story enough to comfortably write new characters in the same verse seamlessly.

One favorite ep has O'Neil accidently sharing memories with a random civilian for months after exposure to an alien communications device.

The civilian guy had visions of going on missions, saving the planet, etc to the point he was going nuts.....

at the end it turns out O'Neil was having visions of bowling and life as a small town barber.... but didn't find that odd at all... just relaxing

you have to have a sence of humor with it I guess

In general, Jack was a very Mal-like figure. As he himself once noted:

"I've spent my whole life sticking it to The Man. . . I don't think I can be The Man."

Cam too, in the sense that his whole function on the team seems to be to soak up damage. Seriously, all of Cam's big "Hero" scenes involve him getting his ass kicked.

Then of course there's Sergeant Siler. If ever there was a man "history stepped on." . .
