First let me start by saying that Disney has seemed to me to be a Blue Sun type company- global marketing of all the finest feioo that rots your brain, your wallet, and your moral integrity, not to mention that old joke(?) that Hitler and Disney had the same genes, but I digress....

Yesterday my five year old and I went to go see
Disney's latest, Walle and it started out a lot like Firefly- Earth that was, too much trash, leaving on a ship, kick-butt female heroin, yada-yada very cutsy. Then IT digressed into some cheesy morals play about environmentalism and personal health responsibility. (gotta get this generation while they're young...)
And I'm thinking "Dear God I just wanna take my kid to a movie and enjoy it without listening to someone else's agenda of the day" but that's not the thing that got me. When we got there they handed out a promo package that included a Walle watch and promo cards for Hollywood Chihuahua THE MOVIE (not kidding) and I turned over the back to read the instructions and it reads "Watch batteries cannot be changed" SOOO that means eventually you will just end up throwing it away and adding to the instant gratification trash problem that THE ENTIRE MOVIE WAS PREACHING AGAINST! I half expected someone to pop a giant needle in my brain and say hocus-pocus do not focus on that marketing man behind the curtain.....

Anybody else get this?

EMBERS

well I was never planning to see Wall-E in the theaters, because the previews looks way too cutsie...
now you've given me MORE reason to not want to see it....

When you see something brilliant like Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away (which were released in this country by Disney, but were entirely made by Miyazaki), which had such beautiful AND subtle messages about the environment.... you wonder what is wrong with huge corporations like Disney which hit people over the head with messages, and THEN don't practice what they preach!

They are corporations. Profit is the goal of corporations. They will say anything they think you want to hear. You are to be congratuated to see through this. The sad truth is most people won't.

Thanks for the one up on this movie. You saved me the trouble of spending my cash on it.

Remember the path to success is exploit.

Ya know to be fair, there was one truly great scene in the movie, where the E.V.E. bot was flying around and flew too close to an electromagnet and got stuck and irritated and she's got this overly itchy trigger finger so she blasts the EM and everything around her(whichs happens to be in a derelict shipyard) and hits one of the ships, and then the burning ship topples into three other ships and goes boom boom BOOM and they look at each other and sigh...

Just reminds me when I've had a few days I've wished for mayhem on that scale. The Irish temper part of Iremist is definately alive and kickin'.

PS Traveler- Love that exploit line!

looks like Disney will do to Chihuahuas what it did to dalmations - end up flooding shelters with unwanted dogs that some poor animal lover will have to 'put down' by the hundreds.

The best movie concerning environmental messages was On Deadly Ground. Period. End of story.

The trash-hauling conspiracy reaches all the way to Disney, obviously.
Seriously- there's a WAY to replace the battery- they just don't want you to know.

Unfortunately, I went to go see On Deadly Ground with my father when I was like 12 and the 15 minutes of the Gal dancin' around mostly naked and me sittin' next to my dad kinda ruined it for me...

Can you say AWKWARD?

Ah, just had my Firefly Moment of Zen for the day. I was channel surfing and stopped on channel 2 for just a sec- long enough to hear "...and maybe you can win $100,000- Shiny!!!!

In my best Surfer Girl,
"Dude,he said shiny! That's hot"

Another odd moment of the day:

I just noticed one of the houses in Deuce Bigelow is the same house they use in the Charmed series?

Anybody notice (or care for that matter?)

I'll just babble a while longer... Would anybody like soup rubbed in their hair?

It's just a noodle, doesn't mean what you think..........

Why should the promotions and producers behind a film make any difference? Do you refuse to read Asimov because they cranked out "I, Robot"?

Harp all you want about Miyazaki, but much of WALL-E was poetry through and through. Granted, the "Earths in trouble!" bit near the end was a bit hamfisted, but you can't fault a whole film, or it's creators, simply because they ascribe to a theory that you don't. I'm sorry that you went out looking for mindless entertainment (ironically, like the humans in the film) but found something more tangible and thoughtful.

EVERYTHING in the media is propaganda of one form or another. I don't fault Disney in any way. They're not perfect, but they are one of the few enterprises out there that does provide some wholesome family entertainment.

Ohh Longchamp, you're irritated with me...

Mindless, hmm... Like the humans in the film hmmm.

I'm guessing you don't have any children, because if you did you would know that a little mindless entertainment is necessary once in a while. Why else call it ENTERTAINMENT?

Besides, the point of the post was to point out the hypocricy of Disney and the way they pump out mounds of plastic junk and THEN try to sell an environmental image, not to piously judge someone else's movie tastes.

Hey pal, I Robot was a great movie. Granted, it had the tiniest connection to the book, but so what? Best you back off this one, 'fore I put you down.

I-Robot was good becasue Alan voiced Sonnie. As for Disney and hypocisy and yada yada. Every movie has an agenda is some fashion. Why can't we just sit back and enjoy them without people feeling the need to take there "read to much into it attitude" and preach it to us. Disney is not innocent by any means but they are not terrible. And if Wall-e or any move helps your kids or anyone become even slightly more environmentally conscious isn't that a good thing no matter what?
And if you really want to talk about hypocisy with environmentalism. I was walking down the street in my local town this past earth day and the local "Green" group, ( the ones that do clean ups and what not) were handing out little squishy earth shaped balls promoting earth day and there organization. Where do u think they end up? Sometimes when you do little things like that if it helps promote awareness in the long run the overall beneift is greater.

Just my opinion
