TWILIGHTSEEKER

Sometimes when I am reading a piece of fan fiction I think DAMNNNN...I wish I had written THAT. So what line do you wish you had written? Or if you are a writer of fan fiction what is your favorite line you have written. Feel free to post either or both.

For me the line I wish I had written is in a story named Coming to Their Senses by just slummin

"She had managed to slip into his psyche like smoke through a keyhole, quiet and lethal."

The line I did write that currently tickles me the most is:

"He had touched her once in the Maidenhead. Defending her back, then wrapping his arms around her compact, athletic little body, in the misguided belief she might need savin. Just before she touched him with hands and table, laying him out flat."

OK OK its three lines but what the hell.

I can't wait to hear everyone else's favorites.

And remember...Reality is only a crutch for those who can not handle Science Fiction

gentle journey all,
twilight seeker

TRAVELER

We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he today that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother;

It took a minute, but Shakespeare does it for me.
I think this is one of his best lines. In truth, I have not read that many of his works, but this is part of a fifty line speech that Shakespeare wrote for Henry V before the Battle of Agincourt.

If you ever read Shakespeare, Henry V is a good choice.

GORAMMAN

SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT

A few people seemed to like this part from the second chapter of my story Spinning Out.

Quote:

River and Jayne stepped out onto the loading ramp to watch them leave. The sun was almost directly over them and the wind kicked up dust from the streets. Simon turned and waived. River waved back, “That was really nice of you. Looking after my brother like that.”

Jayne shrugged slightly, “Ya never know when one of us’ll get shot.”

River brushed her wild hair over her shoulder to reveal her face and looked at Jayne, “You respect him, don’t you?”

“Course I do. Simon patched me up a dozen times or so, does his part round the ship, planned a heist, nailed down Kaylee, keeps your freakish brain glued together, and cleans up all your messes.” Jayne walked back into Serenity without looking at River, “What’s not to respect?”

PLATONIST

Well, for me, anything from Kaynara's "Bed and Wine" series. But, Mal's and Inara's declaration of love is especially poignant in its significance and brilliance.

“I love you. Don’t worry ‘bout sayin’ it back if..."

"I never thought I’d know love, Mal. Before you, I never thought....”

“Guess that’s a fair trade then.” He smoothed his hands over her hair, drying her cheeks with his thumbs. “Cuz before you I felt like one dead.”

KATESFRIEND

I think your task is herculean as there is an unbelievable amount of excellent fanfic in the BSR going back to the early days of 2003. I could tell you hundreds, but this is one that haunts me in its eloquence. It's written by Amdobell, who for sheer volume and dedication to Firefly deserves our appreciation. This isn't just writing, it's word crafting. This is from Stolen Moments - Extremis.

You would think me foolish if you could hear my thoughts. Wonder what I have to atone for but I am not the man you think I am. The mannered confection of a privileged life is the gloss not the substance. I am not just River's brother or the ship's doctor. Not simply a good man pushed to extremes, living on the edge because it is the only place that will have me. Have us. I have demons too. Less surly than your own but they still haunt me. I have never raised myself up to stand against the darkness as you have done. Had I done so the darkness would have surely consumed me, twisted what stands before you out of all recognition.

KATESFRIEND

I couldn't resist - here's another. This is from one of the funniest fics in the BSR. It's by Kaynara and is called Two Times They Were Wet and Cold.

“Survival instinct’s mighty strong,” Mal agrees. “Now the fella in the woods, he’s always thought himself a gentleman. Never dream of taking advantage. I mean, maybe a couple dreams. She is naked and him alive. Doesn't help either that she's gorgeous.”

“Gorgeous?” she repeats, a smile curving her lips.

“Most beautiful thing he's ever seen.”

The words are plainly spoken, and Inara feels her heart thud against the front of her dress.

“And does she feel something for him in turn?” she asks.

Mal gives her a strange look—sad and hopeful at once.

“Ain't perfectly certain,” he says after a beat. “Sometimes he thinks she just might.”

Inara can speak three languages, but all her words are gone.

“That's . . .they must both . . . I mean, the temptation must be very great.”

“I imagine that's so. Especially when she takes his face in her hands and . . . kisses him. On the lips.”

“How does she know he'll kiss her back?”

And there is that look again: a sad, broken smile.

COSMICFUGITIVE

***Shameless self promotion alert***

My all time favourite Jayne line from Re2urgence - The Wounded Shall Fall:

"Waitin' hours is over. The Doc ain't seeing no more patients."

Of course, Jayne is cooly standing in the doorway of River's dorm, with Vera in hand,

as a Reaver attack is in progress.

I mainly love writing for River, and have given her some cool dialogue in the past. (There are too many spoilerish quotes to list.) Although, I did turn some River dialogue into a creepy verse in Schism Part 5: Deliverance.

Dark poetry is something that seems to fit River's personality well:

Out in the black, shadows consume me.
Pain grows, like fading twilight.
Curtains fall on this, lowly theatre of life,
Madness unleashed brings forth the dogs of Hell.
I feel their hunger, hear their cries
- Suppressed anger, held deep inside.
Scattered voices riddle my thoughts,
Pushing, wriggling inside my brain!
They don’t belong here,
These voices in my head!
Can’t find a way to make it stop!
They don’t know the torment I’ve seen,
The pain I’ve endured.
Why won’t they listen? Why don’t they see?!
Everybody will die.

The latest chapter of my Resurgence series is pretty heavy with descriptive, flowing sentences. I wanted to create a certain tragic, poetic tone.

Saline tears flowed down River Tam’s face, gathering in the small of her chin. Her tear ducts screamed for absolution and the comfort of Simon. Anguish took a hold with the pinpoint accuracy of a rapist. Willowy fingers tightened their grip around her waist, struggling to quieten the chaos inside.

Fifteen minutes had passed since the assault on her brother - although it felt like more than an eternity. The numb silence that followed hung like the wisps of a mushroom cloud, a lasting reminder that her world, and everything in it, had been obliterated. Now, River lay in a pool of urine, with only fractured thoughts as company.
