I hope all of you have been able to try the new feature game, Battle of Serenity. It was fun to make, and I hope to make several more Flash games. If you haven’t tried it yet, follow this link: http://www.fireflyfans.net/feature.asp?f=51

The game is based off the 10 second segment in Serenity where Sergeant Malcolm Reynolds saves the day by downing an Alliance skiff that is keeping his troops from taking to higher ground to defend the valley. I tried to get the Chinese labels and the indicators as close as possible to how they functioned in the show. Those CG people put a lot of effort into that little 10-second piece, and I have a new appreciation for their work.

(Boring) History of the Game
Some people like reading this stuff. Hey, some people watch commentaries. I’ve heard some people even juggle geese; hand to God.

I’m always out to improve my mad h4x0r skillz (in this case Flash) so I thought early this year, what kind of game can I build? Not a whole lot of options sprang to mind. I was half ready to do a version of Minesweeper where Serenity piloted amongst Alliance cruisers. Being a fan of first-person shooters, I just had to make a game where you destroy things, and as I watched Serenity again, I found my muse.

I had just heard Nathan Fillion’s description of firing that huge military gun, and I pictured myself there. What a great game that would make…

It was programmed in Flash 5 on a 2GHz Windows PC. Yeah, Haken, sorry for giving you a hard time about MS, but my other boxen are Linux and Mac! (and Flash 7 sux BTW). Programming time: 25 hours, although half of that was just shooting things. I was even tempted to put in a FOX target that replenished ammo, but some people might call that a mood-killer.

Post comments! I may not change this game, but I’m looking for a new game to program. Wasn’t there talk of a MUD or MUCK or something?

It was fun. I sure do suck at it.
I think my brightness was set too low though. I had trouble seeing the little ships.

SaintJayne, your game ROCKS!!! This is the sort of thing that would be worth putting on an official movie web site. It's just hard enough to be challenging without being impossible.

I'd love to see the option to have the Fox logo fly across the screen so we could blast that!

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Very cool game SaintJayne. It was a very cool surprise to pull up the site this morning & find that waiting for me.

It took a couple of games to get the hang of it, but I am up to 6 points.

Funny you should mention....Check out http://www.geocities.com/aimarcusbbe/fireflyMUD/main.html

Isaac is looking for people or reasonable facsimiles of people to help with a Firefly MUD. I'm jumping in, but my experience level is low. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't mind hearing from a whole passle of folk.

Thanks for the comments guys! I hope I could make your days a little brighter. Of course I have to encourage everyone to keep up the target practice.

ManiacNumberOne, you're right, the ships are sometimes impossible to see - that's why the target ring is so important.

Hex20, a score of 32 would be quite impressive! I think there's a thread where you can post your high score.

Haken, Shiny, Ciara, Gaijin, BrownCoat1, ZaphodB, you're too kind. I'm just fueling the Firefly enthusiasm that keeps me coming to this site.

Thank's for the exceptionally fun game Saint Jayne...

Shooting at iddy biddy rings has never been this fun. Er.. ships.. I mean ships. Cause real gunners don't need no "auto-aiming". O heck, who am I kidding

And it's only managed to keep me up for two hours beyond my self appointed bed time ^_^

Wow, good work! I played for about an hour last night, and nocked down 13 skiffs in one game. The only complants I have is that you loose points if one of the skiffs escape and the voices are too quiet compared to the rest of the SFX.

I look forward to more interactive stuff like this in the future!

Who the heck is... Oh, I see! That's a little more than coincidence! Jhonas, what do you know about this?

Gorram it! Now I have to watch all the Alien movies to see if they stole the interface for the UA 571-D Ground Sentry! I found a Google refernce here:

Saint Jayne, cool game ya made there. I like it.

Could ya help me with something, though? I downloaded the game and saved it but for some reason I can't play it. I double-click on it and a message appears saying "Windows Cannot Open This File". I went to the two sites I was given to download something that could open the file. I downloaded Macromedia Flash Player 7 but that didn't change anything and I downloaded Infra-something which allowed me to open the file and see the title screen and the game screen, but the game wouldn't play and there was no sound. I can play the game fine on the webpage while I'm online so shouldn't I be able to open the file that I downloaded and play it offline? I hope I don't sound too much like an idiot here. I'm not that good with tech stuff.

Anyway, it's a good game and it actually got me to sign up so I could post this.

The way I play this game offline is to open a Internet Explorer window and drag the game's file in to the window. It should then open normaly.

Hope that helps SadLittleKing.

SadLittleKing, GunRunner basically has it right. Your computer doesn't know what to do with a .swf file. What you can do is drag the .swf file onto an Internet browser window.

Even better, right click the file and choose "Open With...". Then select "choose program" (only Windows 2000 or above) and pick Internet Explorer or whatever you use. At some point here you can also tell your computer to "always use the selected program". The next time you only need to double-click the .swf file for it to run properly.

Ahhhhh you spotted one of our little secrets :-)
The UA-571-C (not D) was the big Sentry guns seen in the extended version of Aliens, if you take a look at the laptops that controlled the guns you'll see where our little joke came from :-)

Fun game BTW!

I was having so many problems aiming in this game - I think because I'm thinking of my mouse as a joystick, so I'll pull back to aim higher, but really the gun is now pointing towards the ground. Not helpful. I'm getting the hang of it now, though, and I've managed to get my score above 0. Yay!
