BLACKOUTNIGHTS

Hey guys. I don't know if anyone's started a Firefly theme at Atlanta's annual Dragon*Con convention. If this sounds like something people are interested in, I'll be happy to look into it as I'm not that far away and sorta know the head honcho in charge of it.
Let me know something at todd10@hotmail.com - or just post here. If the reponse is significant (i.e. at least 30-40 people), I'll try and whoop something up.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

We kind of started a Dragon Con thread the other day, just got bumped to the next page by all the traffic:

http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=3309

My wife and I go to Dragon Con every year. We are attending again this year, & I will be in my Browncoat costume.

It would be cool to have a Firefly room where we could have viewing parties, discussions, and maybe get someone from the cast to show up for Q&A sessions & autographs. That would be shiny!

I am planning on attending the DragonCon, and would love for there to be a Firefly presence.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Absolutely!!! There are 4 browncoats just in my house, and several more in my immediate vicinity, and we all go to Dragon*Con yearly. A Firefly track/panel would be fan-freakin'-tastic!!!

And therein lies the rub. For something to make good sense to the con organizers they have to look at the money. They do a job and then they get paid for it. To bring cast members/ writers/ production crew/ whatever in they will have to fly them to Atlanta, put them up in a hotel, feed them, and pay them an appearance fee. If that costs even a paltry 1000 dollars and ticket price is 30 bucks, they would have to draw 34 people THAT WOULD NOT HAVE COME OTHERWISE in order to make their money back.

I want this too. That's why I'm talking to my friend who's putting together Dreamcon in Jacksonville on this type of stuff. The guests are hard to justify from the money side, so I'm trying to talk him into viewing rooms, fanfic, contests with autographed swag to be begged from Mutant Enemy, role-playing games and other fan-driven things.

Unles the movie takes off we can't expect these things to be driven by the dollar signs. We have to drive them ourselves with passion and involvement. What other things can we come up with to pitch to con-organizers?

I know a guest would be pushing it, but if one showed up @ Dragon Con, I bet we would have every Browncoat who could scrounge the money up & who was this side of the Rockies, coming to the Con.

Even if they could not swing a guest, a room for panel discussions and viewing would be awesome. It could also be a means of getting the word on Firefly out to more people. I know I would be willing to hand out fliers and talk to people about the show to try to generate interest.

Other things, besides viewings & discussions, that could be pitched (depending on the # of people attending) could be filk songs (in memory of Lux), a costume contest for those interested, and press kits for those who want to learn more about Firefly.

Perhaps we could get a tentative list of those who plan to attend to get a feel for those who might be able to make it.

Plotting. Planning. Organizing. refusing to lay down arms. Sounds good. I like it.

I'm going to be doing the same kinda things at Dreamcon in jax (see the fl/ga browncoats thread). Jacksonville is only about 4 or 5 hours from Atlanta, so we may be able to do a double whammy between DragonCon and Dreamcon. (Dreamcon.net is the website)

If there is going to be a FireFly presence than it will be done by the American SF track. Dragon*Con won't do a Firefly only track because of the cancellation by FOX.

I spoke with the American SciFi Director and he is still unsure if he'll include FireFly. I know he did something last year.

They actually did something Firefly last year? I don't remember seeing anything for it. Damn!

I hope they do something this year. Cancellation shouldn't effect it too much since it was cancelled in Sept last year.

That doesn't explain the Charlie Callas panel that they had last DragonCon that even Charlie didn't show up for. (There were 6 people there and 4 were my buddies and me.) I doubt if 40 people got together to beg the convention bigwigs to invite Charlie Callas. The closest thing he ever did to scifi fantasy was the 'voice' of Pete's Dragon.

Anyhoo, you can count me and my 4 buddies in! We wouldn't miss a Firefly panel! Anything to support the show.

This is so great.

With every con, you had a strong presense from SW, Trekkers, B5 and the like. Firefly is just the kind of show with its rabid fanbase to have a stately presense at each con throughout the world.

If Firefly does not live through TV (the worst medium ever!), the movie could spark the same for what Star Trek I and especially one of the best SciFi movies of all time, Wraith of Khan did for Star Trek. I can easily see Firefly continuing in book, comic book form or even a spin off 5 to 10 years from now.

Joss could be the next Gene.

Ooh, I just got to thinking: if I could get my wife to go, I could easily get her to dress up as a browncoat soldier (like Zoe) or anything with a Asian flair (her wedding dress was done in Vietnamese fashion). An she has so many calfhigh boots, she would be so easy to dress up. The necklace that Zoe wears is the exact style of jewelry that my wife wears. I think I am more like Wash than anyone so Hawaiian shirts, here I come!

They did a panel consisting of the Track Director and some friends talking about the show and they show one of the unaired episode. I didn't go I was too drunk and role playing with friends.

I work at the Con, my room is across from American SciFi. I run the Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time room with my wife.

I've stopped reading because in my opinion the series is just dragging. My wife just fills me in

Interested? By all that is good, bad and indifferent, interested is far too simple a word for it. Truth to tell, the Firefly DVD set was a community Christmas present for me and my friends. Since then the fanbase has doubled, everyone loves it, and some of us are constant attendees to Dragon. I think I'd speak for them and see if it'd be possible to cast 9 votes at least.

You guys want to get in touch with the American Scifi track. :) The track director is a cool guy, and is very supportive of the show. I believe they're planning on at least one panel devoted to it.

"Looks like we got here in the nick of time! What does that make us, Zoe?"
"Big Damn Heroes, sir!"
"Ain't we just!"

I have never been to DragonCon. I live in Birmingham and wanted to go last year but I had to work. I really want to be there this year, but if there is going to be a Firefly panel or something then no power in the 'verse could stop me.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I don't go to cons. But if there were a Firefly track at DragonCon, I would make it a point to go.

It would be cool if we could get like a dozen or more Browncoats to show up for the Con. I know my wife & I will be there.
