Even thinking about that youtube makes me want
to weep. I heard that Ellen show on my TV-band
radio and it was delightful. Not sure I could
bear to watch 'tube unless I knew for sure he'd
be back on the show.

Objects in Space. Jubal and Kaylee. If that's not perfection in writing and acting, such perfection does not exist. Make me shiver in fear every time, I mean EVERY time.

Laughing your head off lines:

"See Vera? You get dressed up all pretty and Jayne takes you out somewhere special."--Jayne

"It only works on her, Jayne." (Zoe to Jayne re Jayne's rather apprehensive reaction to Simon's safe words)

"I knew it! You let her kiss you!"--Mal

"I'll be in my bunk."---Jayne

"Am I a lion?"--Mr. Jubil Early (response to Simon's "Are you Alliance?")

"River, he's really quite gentle. And fuzzy."
--Simon

"I can't keep track of her when she's not incorporeally possessing a ship. We had a complicated childhood."--Simon

good/interesting lines:

"Copper for a kiss."--River

"Know why? We're just too pretty to die. Just
too pretty."--Mal

"You hold!"--Mal

"She understands. She doesn't comprehend."--River

Going for a ride.

Adam's always fun to watch!

I really don't have a favorite line, per se. But, a lot of the things I love that are said in this show are the things that aren't spoken. For instance, when Mal sees Serenity for the first time at the end of OoG or when Wash gives Zoe a thumbs up after Mal walks in on the "Don't forget to call him 'sir'. He likes that." conversation in the pilot episode.

Might try that one if you're becoming an Adam

Another one to watch is Alan. If he is in the
frame, he's reacting. Jewel, too, though usually
if we can see her she's a focal point rather than
background.

I didn’t mean she nailed it one take, I meant that she nailed the scene. Whenever I watch the exchange between Kaylee and Jubal Early in that scene it just seems the Jewel made it special, like her special moment of horror. Just very well acted.

I'm curious as to how many here know where the name "Jubal Early" comes from.

One of my favorite lines is the last line of the last episode..episode number 14 that was uttered by Early. It is a fitting line to end, not only the existential theme of the episode itself, but the series too.

"Well, here I am."

More favorite lines:

Mal "Everybody dies alone." from Out of Gas.

Book "When I talk about belief, why do you always assume I'm talking about God?" from the movie Serenity.

Book "Oh, I got heathens aplenty right here." from The Train Job.

Wash "The legs. Oh, yeah. Definitely have to say it was her legs. You can put that down." from Bushwhacked

Mal "May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one." from Bushwhacked.

Book "If you take sexual advantage of her, you're going to burn in a very special hell. A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater." from OMR.

Alan is another one to watch. He is always making faces. I love his facial expressions and reactions.

Some just pointed out to me the scene in Train Job after Jayne falls down. Wash uses Jayne as a foot rest. The close is of Adam on the floor but you can see Wash put his foot on him as he starts talking.

There are so many lines but the one coming to mind right now is from Heart of Gold.

Kaylee: Wash tell me I'm pretty.

Wash: Were I unwed I would take you in a manly fashion.

Kaylee: Because I'm pretty.

Wash: Because you're pretty.

I love that interaction.

What is "NF's"? I don't know the reference.

I do know that Jubal Early, whom you correctly identified as an officer (general) in the U.S. Civil War, was the person who coined the term "Lost Cause" in his book by the same name. He was also one of the major players in the Battle of Gettysburg as chronicled in the book "The Killer Angels", which Whedon credits as the inspiration for Firefly.

Given the blood link, I don't think that was absolutely accidental, huh?

(And I still can't think of Mal as a parental figure.)

Lines from 'Those Left Behind'

Jayne: Uh, Mal..didn't you shoot this guy in the head?

Dobson: No, you moron. The pound of metal grafted to my face, it's purely cosmetic.

Actually, pretty much anything from Dobson in that. He's mad as a bucket of frogs, but articulate with it.

Not really in line with this thread, but I was watching Ariel again today, and was again struck by how I was still surprised at something.
When Mal wrenches Jayne, the camera closes up on Mal, I still get the feeling that this is anti-Mal, the bodysnatchers got him and switched places with him, who is this and what did they do with our captain, the stepford captains are taking over, the demon seeds from Areil have overtaken him, like that. Maybe this is because the first Ep I saw was the end of Ariel, so I didn't have a feel for the concepts of this verse, but even now I wonder if this is some ominous borg run amok pretending to be Mal.
Am I unique with this, or do others sense the same thing? I do look forward to the wrenching of Jayne, and the following scene, but the closeup (going to commercial, I suspect) always catches me off guard, and I get the same wonderment.
Maybe on his soap opera he had an evil twin that he practiced this look for.

No, that face belongs to Sergeant Reynolds, the man who had to make some harsh decisions to ensure the survival of troops under his command.

Mal has had his trust betrayed, and that doesn't sit well with him. So he has to make a decision to get rid of the untrustworthy member of the crew. He's pissed off at the betrayal, at the fact he has to lose a valuable member of the party for an unknown quantity, over a matter of principle. And I don't think he quite realises Jayne's POV at first. (Jayne has a far more limited view of what is in his circle of responsibility, and he's protecting that group by removing the problem - when Mal susses that, he doesn't space the man.)

see this is the first time we see mal truly angry, and his sergeantness comes back, cuz essentially jayne declared war by betraying him. "you turn on ANY of my crew, you turn on me! you did it to me, jayne." he's tryna protect himself, his interests, and his crew. jayne jeopardized all of that by raising attention from the feds. it coulda gone way further than just jayne getting arrested if they found anything out about Serenity, he wanted to make sure jayne knew that.

That's pretty much what I said. Only with spell-checking and punctuation. (Just kidding, FLT!)

I think Sergeant Reynolds, pre-Serenity Valley (and pre-Shadow) was quite a different character to Captain Mal. A different sort of angry, for want of a better description.
