Here's an idea...
It's highly unlikely that the show will be coming back or another movie will be made anytime soon. Joss Whedon has other projects and the cast has moved on too other things. So why not try another approach? Bring back Firefly with a new cast, set it ten or twenty years in the future, maybe have the characters be the children of the first crew, or something along those lines. It would be a chance to start anew, and this time make a series that will last.

It's a long shot, to be sure...but consider what happened with Star Trek. Both shows have a lot in common. Star Trek was another scifi show that was a little ahead of it's time, which went off the air far sooner than it should have, and which quickly attracted a large and devoted fan base who remained attached to it long after it was gone. Consider also that the first Star Trek movie did not do well at the box office, like Serenity, but became popular on home video, just as Serenity did on DVD.

It could work. When Star Trek:TNG debuted, it tapped into that large, loyal fanbase of Trekkies and stayed on the air for seven seasons and spawned a whole host of related shows like DS9. Firefly: The Next Generation could have the same potential, there are a LOT of Browncoats out there eagerly waiting for something new...I count myself among them.

Any ideas on how the story should go, who should be in it?

The title would need sum tweakin'. It's a long shot fer sure. It'll be good to continue with Mal, Zoe, Kaylee, Inara, Jayne, Simon, and River...wait that's everyone left anyway. ok. Flash backs, definately need flash backs.

Here's an idea. The first episode starts with Mal trying to keep up with River as she scurries around the ship doing duties of engineer, pilot, and cook. A far a we can see, they're th only ones on the ship. Then, as they enter the Cargo hold yet again, the rest of the crew come in from the Galley port singing Happy Birthday to Mal...wait I just gave away my idea! Doh!...I'll be in my bunk.

--------------
Mal: Cry Baby cry.
Wash: Make your mother sigh. Engaging the CryBaby.

I have thought also, that FF:TNG would be the logical way to proceed. More than a few years have passed now, and, as you say, the cast has moved on, but some kind of blend of the old and the new could be worked out.

I've got a fanfic going, if it ever gets written down to a point where I can post it, with Mal, Zoe, and Jayne, featuring Kathleen ( aka Katie) and Simon Jr. Tam, and DR. Hoban Washburne... River gets a cameo, and, sadly, 'Nara and Badger have passed away.

Set sixty years in the future, River is seventy-seven and the last survivor of the original crew. Wash and Zoe's daughter is the captain, and Simon and Kaylee's kids, "the twins", are interchangeable as pilots and engineers. Throw in a fat Buddhist monk who can perform miracles with protein, and a mysterious passenger who claims to be the love child that Inara never told Mal about, and you got yourself a crew, complete with flashbacks.

If you like Firefly:Almost the Next Generation, you'll love Jane0904's, Hermitsrest's and Slumming's fan fic.

Each is the continuing saga of the crew, but with different results. Some couples have uncoupled and found new partners and in hermitsrest's the ships are intact. But they all add the complication of kids on Serenity or on a planet and the adults getting on with their lives.

I think this path is probably the most realistic way to bring back Firefly in any meaningful way. Fans paying for new episodes
probably won't work, they will never raise enough money, and even if they did it's unlikely anyone involved in the old show
would sign up. As stated before, they've all moved on. Nathan Fillion is on other shows and in movies, Jewel Stait and
Morena Baccarin are on the SciFi Channel, Summer Glau is on the Sarah Conner Chronicles...and so on. Being constantly
associated with a show that was last on almost six years ago might be annoying to them by now (consider how William Shatner,
Leonard Nimoy and the other Star Trek actors struggled against being typecasted.) A new show with new characters would likely
be the best way to go.

I like the idea as well but generally I'd think it would be better to spread the descendants around a bit and not have them all on the ship. Kind of like one's got a ship of their own, one's on a regularly visited planet leaving a few on Serenity with some completely new carefully written in characters. Work it more like the way life works, people move on but usually stay connected. That way they could all be used regularly on each episode and make the scope of it a little larger.

Mal's expression in the scrapyard when he first see's Serenity says it all.

I think you and I are on the same wavelength as far as offspring: unexpected last-minute pregnancy, and 'jedi' twins (just reverse the genders in the Tam family [including Kaylee] and you get a really creepy Skywalker/Solo corollary).

I don't know about a whole series, but I got a movie idea.

Mal and crew have long settled on a moon near Persephone. Some backwater place. Jayne's still around, he's the local sheriff. Mal lives alone (Inara left him years ago) his estranged son has a ranch nearby. Mal's grandson idolizes Mal (which dad doesn't like) and is pining for a life of adventure. The kid finds Mal's old gun and runs away from home. Mal's son angrily blames Mal. After a big argument they head out after the boy. Jayne gets wind of things and shows up just as they start off. Along the way, they reunite with Zoe, Inara, and River (River has a boat). Maybe a caemo for a happily married Dr. & Mrs. Tam.

How's this for a premise....
It's twenty years after the original series. As a result of the revelation from Miranda, the Alliance faced increasing opposition from within, eventually resulting in a second civil war, only this time the Alliance doesn't hold itself together and falls apart into various competing factions, warlordism and independent planets. By this time the original crew has settled down on some faraway world. Mal and Inara have a son, and are still together in some way...or maybe not, that would have to be worked out. Simon and Kaylee have started a family and have a bunch of kids. River has disappeared for some mysterious reason. Wash made Zoe pregnant before he died and has a daughter who is as much of a badass as she is. Jayne has gone off on his own somewhere, still a mercenary. When the second war begins, Mals son, Zoe's daughter, and one or two of Simon and Kayle's kids go off to fight, and like the older generation come off on the losing side. Now they are trying to get by as best as they can, maybe on a ship of their own, or maybe as resistence fighters or mercenaries or a band of thieves or adventurers, something along those lines. They find out that River is alive, and she is involved in something amazing. A ship has arrived from Earth-that was, and she is on it....
So, whatta ya think?

It probably wouldn't work at Fox...let's be honest, of all the networks they are probably the suckiest. Firefly isn't the only incredible show they've panicked over and pulled the plug on. I'd say the SciFi Channel, might be a better bet, except they're also as trigger happy and shortsighted at times....a cable network would be a better fit though.

BTW, any ideas on who should star in a revived series like this? I was thinking relative unknowns, give them a chance to grow into the roles. I'm thinking maybe Nicki Clyne, who was just killed on Battlestar Galactica, she might be a good fit...

Twenty years from now might be a possibility....but who wants to wait that long? Besides, as previously stated, the old cast has moved onto other things. No, a fresh start, that's what needed, a chance to do it right, on a network that is willing to give the show a chance to grow. Now that I think about it, something like this might do well on HBO or Showtime, both of which have shown a willingness to take risks on excellent works.

I'm all for a new show set in the verse, but I really don't think it should try to be Firefly the next generation. It should just be a whole new story rather than trying to somehow link back to Serenity.

How about an up and coming member of the alliance and we follow his story as he learns the truth behind the lies he's been fed throughout his career to this point. How he deals with them and how it changes who he is.

Oh heck let's just give Saffron her own show. I'd watch that.

...i have an idea... forming in my brain. The ideal would be to use the same cast, but the original cast has moved on with new projects which does pose as a problem. A new approach would be essential. Maybe an animated sequel to Serenity the movie using the voices of the original cast. Not a manga animation, tho. Something like 'A Scanner Darkly' but more realistic and refined. More or less, a tribute to the old school Ralph Bakshi animated films. Bakshi used live footage to cut budget costs. I'm sure these old and new techniques combined with CGI would make for a new visual experience. Expense would be low and easily scheduled around the original cast's busy schedule. Straight to DVD with hopes of enough fan support that a third, but live action film, would be put into production.
for the record, i have most of the storyline worked out. so, somebody, let's make it happen.

the animated idea is something new, and I kindof like it. of course, I would prefer the origanal cast, but we can't have everything.

I was thinking though, could we, the fans, do the animation and sound and put it together and air it on public television?

Its not much, but enough to keep us flying.

suposing we were able to launch this show, it might broaden the fanbase enough and create enough interest to get a second movie off the ground. That would be gnarly, especialy if we could have an episode with jane, wash and simon stranded on a raft (which is wht my new fanfic is about, sortof)

I like all the creativity in the room, and I am constantly amazed at the level of inteligence and resourcefullnes you guys have.

Just the title of this thread frightens me.

Either we get the continuation, same ship, same crew, or we move onto something different. I couldn't bear to watch someone else trying to wear the tight pants and browncoat with the same dash and verve as NF.

And say no to space-spawn, people. The whole 'and all the crew settle down and have kids and their kids all play together in the ship' makes me beyond nauseous. Anything that becomes the bastard spawn of Roddenberry and McCaffrey should be taken out and shot.

Of course, we could end up with a future series that has the love-bots rising in revolt...oh, yeah, we did that (*sings*starbucking across the universe...)

A spin-off or continuation of the universe with other characters could work. Ultimatly I want our BDH's back.. but I would take anything we can get.

I can't take credit for this.. other people thought of it long ago when trying to come up with an idea to write story's not about the orignal crew but something else set in the Firefly universe. I don't think it ended up goign anywhere.. but there were some good ideas people had thrown into the ring.

And the ONE thing that could tie Firefly to another story is Serenity herself. Remember... Mal wasn't the first owner of Serenity.. and he may not be the last (Rememeber that firefly's last forever with a mechanic half awake ). Although I don't like the idea so much of jumping into the furture to see another owner and crew of Serenity... there could have been untold number of people that owned her BEFORE Mal. So I can easily see a series that comes BEFORE Firefly where the story is about the captains and crews that called Serenity (or whatever the name of our beloved ship may have been called by that captain) their home.

So there's nothing saying that if you only go back in time a few years.. that Mal and crew are still out there (they just necissarily haven't met each other yet) so our BDH's could actually be guest/recurring characters of this new show!

I like this idea of looking at the past

On a slightly different note, I think a "Young Adventures of our BDHs" would be pretty good.

I would love to see Mal and Jayne when they where kids, It wouldn't surprise me if Wash was kindof like 'The Fonze'

Not to rip off other shows, but it would sortof be like "THe young adventures of INdiana Jones" and bananza. I think it would be great if we could somehow have Mal and Jayne run into eachother during thier late teen years.

Oh, god, no...NOT a 'Young Adventures of...'

The ship, yes, the crew, no. (And teen Jayne would be, well, have you seen 'My Bodyguard'? Says it all.)

The whole thing I liked about Firefly was dropping into people's lives when they already had history. Seeing some of the backstory gradually revealed is great. But I don't particularly want to watch a version of 'All the Pretty Horses'/'Lonesome Dove' with a moody teen Mal.

And Wash - you know that the fry-cook opportunity he got fired on had to be a Mooby's...

I prefer the version on the back of my eyelids to anything else out there.

Sign on the dotted line & Uncle will gladly equip you with not only a pistol, but a rifle & maybe some high explosives. 'Course it's an eight year hitch (no matter what the recruiter tells you), and if you're clever enough not to die, you'll get to spend all of it in the sand...

I've said it before, I'll say it again- Stories of the War. I found the idea- a Solar System spanning war- rather intriguing. And Mal and Zoe were in there as well- AND Tracy, AND Monty, AND most likely Jayne'd fit in there somewhere. And normal, non-Brown folks like wars, mostly. And Big TV knows that, so I believe that it would fit the bill for that "Action Drama" that F*X wants.

In a lost age, the world is divided into four nations: the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads. Within each nation, there is a remarkable order of men and women called the "benders" who can learn to harness their inborn talent and manipulate their native element. Bending is a powerful form combining martial art and elemental magic. In each generation, only one bender is solely capable of controlling all four elements. That bender is the Avatar.

The Avatar is the spirit of the world manifests in human form. When the Avatar dies, it reincarnates into the next nation in the cycle. Starting with the mastery of his or her native element, the Avatar learns to bend all four elements.

Throughout the ages, the countless incarnations of the Avatar have served to keep the four nations in harmony. Then, the firebenders attacked. Just as the world needed the Avatar the most, he mysteriously vanished. A hundred years later, the Fire Nation is near final victory in its ruthless war of world domination. The Air Nomads were destroyed, the Air Temples ravished, and all airbender monks eradicated. The Water Tribes were raided and driven to the brink of extinction. The Earth Kingdom remains and fights a hopeless war against the Fire Nation. Many believe the Avatar was never reborn into the Air Nomads and the cycle is broken.

In the desolated South Pole, a lone Water tribe struggles to survive. It is here that the village's last remaining waterbender Katara and her warrior brother Sokka rescue a strange 21-year-old girl named River who has been suspended in hibernation in an iceberg. The Water tribe soon discovers that River is not only an Airbender--the extinct race no one has seen in a century--but also the long lost Avatar. Now Katara and Sokka must safeguard the Avatar in her journey to master all four elements and save the world from the Fire Nation.

I think your right, a young adventures series wouldn't be that great, but I'm still curious as to what Mal would have been like as a kid. (And I haven't seen the bodyguard movie)

On an almost completely different note, what set of circumstances could possible exist that would cause Simon and Jayne to be, if not freinds, then get along somewhat. I'm planning on writing a fanfic centered on thier non-existant friendship, and I need somehelp with the brainstorming proccess. Thanks

The way I see it, Jayne has a younger brother (and in my 'verse, younger sisters) He's certainly used to siblings, and the way he relates to Simon is very like that. If the rivalry over Kaylee is resolved, then they may find a way to get along. Simon has only ever had a little sister, and will need to adjust to 'big brothers' in his world-view. (River is used to tormenting a big brother, and will get on just fine.)

Basically, they will bicker and snark, unless external forces threaten, in which case they will back each other up. And then harp on about it afterwards.

Teen Mal - stroppy teen rather than angry man. Aware of the wider 'verse, but only as it interferes with his life. I always think of Shadow as having 'a sky big as freedom', the sort of clean, clear outdoors world that the thought of industrialising would be criminal. The sense of justice and the sense of humour would still be there, along with the ability to put his foot in his mouth regular-like around girls.
