Yep I think its better than American Coke. Its the unraveling of the empire. You have to go down to Nogales to smuggle it across the border. The key is they use pure sugar cane. And also its that glass bottle taste that helps. Now Red Rock Cola out of Atlanta is pretty tasty. So is Boylans. Uh what did ya think I was talking about. Nafta has failed it was suppose to provide me with cheap coke. Not that plastic tasting stuff on the shelves. Remember how good Dr Pepper was now its like perfume. I am tellen ya the end of the empire.

Ah, a personal love of mine: hard to find sodas!

You're right- cane sugar makes all the difference in the world. Dublin Dr Pepper outside of Ft Worth TX still uses cane sugar. As far as I can tell, you can only get coke with sugar from Mexico and at passover.

There are a lot of smaller bottlers that make sodas with sugar, especially root beer. Boylans is one of the biggest.

Now if you want to talk root beer....

You can get Mexican coke in some of the Mexican brands grocery stores in Chicago. Expensive though so it's a special treat not an everyday drink.

Spring Grove Soda made in Spring Grove, Minnesota, still uses cane sugar, and it is soooooo delicious. It's a treat we only buy when we are having out of town guests.

You can get it at almost any "supermercato" Mexican grocery store. We go at least once a month and get 6-8 bottles. I can't even drink regular Coke anymore, it's nowhere near as good as the Mexican coke.

My husband is in love with them. He always reminds me to grab one (and an Argentinian empanada) while I'm there.
I just like the bottles. They look like they've been through hell & back. If those bottles could talk....

My grandfather had a small department store here in the small town of Washington, NC. He kept the small bottles of cane sugar Coke in a refrig next to his office upstairs with a small plastic box with a slit in the top for payment. Honor system of course.

My greatest pleasure as a small child was to put my coins in the box and pull out a bottle that was so cold that it had ice crystals around the glass lip.

Alas, both the Coke and the store are gone but maybe if I can find a Mexican market with it or bribe someone who lives near Dublin, TX for a Dr. Pepper I'll get to relive those memories.

All of the large supermarkets I frequent have at least a small section of mexican foods, and usually include sodas, often in glass bottles. The Sprite is wonderful, haven't seen Coke but not normally a fan. Royal Crown always seemed better to me than Coke. I wish I could find more Montain Dew with cane sugar in a bottle.

RW Knudsens has a carbonated juice spritzer without high fructose corn syrup, the Red Rasberry is fantastic. A new propduct, switch is also great ( www.switchbev.com) no sugar or preservatives, just fruit juice reconstituted with carbonated water.
Hanks premium Root Beer and Cream Sodas also use cane sugar.

I had Mexican coke (in a can) while on the BC Cruise - it was certaiunly better than the horrid stuff they force on you in the US

Oooh, sounds great! Do they happen to have the Topo Sabores brand fruit-flavored sodas? Their Pineapple is really good. Not Jarritos.

For root beer, you can go to www.rootbeerbarrel.com. Besides for giving some pretty good reviews, he lists the type of sweetener used. In particular, I have to agree with his review of Boylans Natural Root Beer (sugar), Bulldog Root Beer(sugar, honey, maltodextrin), and Boylans Creamy Red Birch Beer.

My grandpa had a huge tin garage , and from somewhere acquired an ancient Coke machine that he put just inside the doorway...

My task was to stay sufficiently stocked with nickels , so that I could drop one in the slot , pull on the lever , and liberate a bottle from its captivity behind the narrow hinged window...It was tricky , 'cause I was little , to reach the lever , basically hang on it with my right hand , and , with my other hand , pull with sufficient force to extract a bottle from behind the glass...

There were basically two sizes of bottle then...The little 6-1/2 ounce size and the standard 8 Oz. size...Later , competition from other brands caused a move to larger bottles like the 10 ounce...

I had a lot of ways of collecting coin in those days , but a walk to the store was an opportunity to look for bottles on the roadside and down in the ditches...We'd get 2 cents for each pop bottle that we returned at the store , which really helped stretch the budget , 'cause a soda was a nickel , as was a candy bar...

The store wouldn't accept bottles for return if they were too nasty , so a lot of times , we'd have to leave the 'ditch' bottles for the walk home...

Then , when we got home , we'd take the garden hose and blast the mud and gunk off 'em , and set 'em in an old crate for a 'cash advance' toward our next store visit...That was what passed for a 'Coke Rewards' incentive in those days...We could see all our 'assets' at a glance !

Not so many years ago , I was passing through a little town in eastern NC , and stopped to ask for directions at a little corner store...The place had already seen its 'Better Days' , and was all but defunct...Seemed like it was a rummage sale more than a store , and a place for the locals to congregate...

I noticed a couple of 1-Gallon glass bottles that had the Coke-syrup labels , 'cause they were left over from when the store had a 'soda fountain'...There was a dark pool of Coke-syrup left in the bottom of each bottle...It was a little surprising that the stuff was still liquid , but more surprising that it wasn't growing mold or anything...Apparently , the phosphoric acid in Coke precludes that kind of problem...

I bought the Coke-syrup bottles and later sold them to a collector friend .

I know what you mean , NCB , about the old Dr. Pepper...That used to be a special treat , 'cause I couldn't get it just everywhere...

They don't make 'em like they used to...

Nowadays , if I travel through rural South Carolina , I'm always looking for a place to get a 'Blenheim' Ginger Ale . It's sold in 3 basic levels of 'heat' , and I like the hottest (and , scarcest) one...Not every place will carry the hottest one , 'cause a lot of folk won't drink it !

You only tip back one of those if you're going for 'Hard Burn' !

I should have clarified; that's the bottler, not a store. They may not sell direct. Further, if you're in the area, probably all of your Dr Pepper comes from them.

You also might want to try the Strawberry and Jamaican Lemonade. When I was younger, I was almost freebasing that stuff. Very yummy indeed.

I don't know for sure about the ingredients, but here in Michigan (and a few surrounding states) there's a pop we drink called Faygo. On the rare instances I drink pop, I'm likely to reach for that stuff. The Rock & Rye is excellent.

Dublin Dr. Pepper from Dublin, TX still us glass bottles and Imperial Pure Cane Sugar. They have been since Dr. Pepper was created in 1800's. Dr. Pepper is older than Coke or Pepsi. Tastes better too, and I don't have to cross the boarder.

Oh yes FAYGO, When I worked in Pittsburgh PA where steiler clones are designed they had that at giant eagle stores. A yankee product but pretty good. The rock and rye yummy. So I did research on this cola product. The big 2 made contracts for only their stuff in grocery stores. I think Bi-Lo down in the Great Southern United States is the last ones to sell it. Ya'll find it in convience stores close to Dtroit or with persian owners with connections to Michigan. I saw some in Reno thats when I noticed who owns the stores that are from Dtroit ya'll have faygo. But its just not rite when the big 2 push out good little bottlers. Time for a revolution. It started with tea. We got to have are yummy snacks in life to feel superior to the rest of the world. Faygo, Utz chips, Firefly dvds, and pickled sausage man your set in life. I got to try that Dublin Dr Pepper. I was worried about shipping from Ireland but now I know its a texan product. I'm so happy. Doo Da Doo Dah Dey PC
