...in Vulcan! Well ain't that a nodd to Firefly. I was watching an episode of Enterprise on SPIKE Channel called "Shuttlepod One", in which Tucker and Lt. Reed are seperated from the Enterprise and hope to get to a relay station before their air runs out.

During a dream sequence, Lt. Reed finds himself and Tucker in the Sick Bay. T'Pol comes on to him because his Heroics in saving them himself and Tucker. Reed says he never liked his name, Malcolm. T'Pol says that Malcolm, or Mal-comb, means Serenity in Vulcan! How awesome is that!!

*sign* Just need to sit down now...a bit woozy.

I hate to rain on your parade, but memory-alpha.org says that mal-kom may not really mean "serenity" since it was defined in a dream sequence (it's a little more than half way down this page: http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Vulcan_language). But on the other hand, the little fangirl in me really wants to believe that it's true!

And, creators of many of the different sci-fi series are often fans of one another (i.e.-Mal was influenced by Han), so I wouldn't be too suprised if they did that on purpose.

If I remember right, that Enterprise episode aired before Firefly started up.

ETA: It aired Feb. 2002

If that was true, I wish they could have figured out a way to prevent Firefly's cancelation before they got out of that rift. Oh, well.

I know this has no bearing on the Vulcan translation, although I have to admit I like the Vulcan translation... :-) But for info's sake...

From this page:

Quote:

Malcolm
Derived from the Gaelic "maol Caluim" meaning "follower of the dove" (meaning Saint Columba), there have been four kings of Scotland bearing the name Malcolm.

Sounds sorta peaceful and serene, huh?

I found this interesting as well

From this page:

The Malcolm/MacCallum clan motto is "In ardua tendit" which means "He has attempted difficult things".

Sounds like our Cap'n. ;-)
