Old bar is at 125+ posts, so here's another one to lead us into the weekend and the holiday following it. Y'all drink up, you know how the Irish like to do it.

Old thread:
http://www.fireflyfan.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=32926

I'm amazed that someone who can watch and help take apart human corpses is disgusted by a little dirty water. Huh. Despite a few small examples of that terminology, it really is a great poem, and wonderful for reciting with a group of ex-Rangers at a Tavern off in the woods.

Gunga Din is a poem written by Rudyard Kipling (same person who wrote The Jungle Book), and if anyone wants to read it, here is a link:
http://www.bartleby.com/103/48.html

*sings*
As I was going over the far famed Kerry mountains
I met with captain Farrell and his money he was counting.
I first produced my pistol, and then produced my rapier.
Said stand and deliver, for ye are a bold deceiver
musha ring dumma do damma da
whack for the daddy 'ol
whack for the daddy 'ol
there's whiskey in the jar

*leaves hugs and chocolate for any that want them*

The short answer is yes:

To a land of opportunity
That some of them will never see
Fortune prevailing
Across the western ocean
Their bellies full
Their spirits free
They'll break the chains of poverty
And they'll dance

I love Whiskey in the Jar, but for all you folks in the 76th, here's a soldier's song;

Whiskey, You're the Devil
Now brave boys, we're on the march
off to Portugal and Spain
Drums are beating, banners flying
the Devil at home will come tonight
so it's go, fare thee well
with a too da loo ra loo ra doo de da
a too ra loo ra loo ra doo de da
me rikes fall too ra laddie-o
there's whisky in the jar

Oh, whisky you're the devil
you're leading me astray
over hills and mountains
and to Amerikay
you're sweetness from the Bleachner
and spunkier than tea
oh whisky you're my darling drunk or sober

The French are fighting boldly
men are dying hot and coldly
give every man his flask of powder
his firelock on his shoulder
so its go, fare thee well
with a too da loo ra loo ra doo de da
a too ra loo ra loo ra doo de da
me rikes fall too ra laddie-o
there's whisky in the jar

Oh, whisky you're the devil
you're leading me astray
over hills and mountains
and to Amerikay
you're sweetness from the Bleachner
and spunkier than tea
oh whisky you're my darling drunk or sober

Says the old wan do not wrong me
don't take me daughter from me
for if you do I will torment you
when I'm dead my ghost will haunt you
so its go, fare thee well
with a too da loo ra loo ra doo de da
a too ra loo ra loo ra doo de da
me rikes fall too ra laddie-o
there's whisky in the jar

Oh, whisky you're the devil
you're leading me astray
over hills and mountains
and to Amerikay
you're sweetness from the Bleachner
and spunkier than tea
oh whisky you're my darling drunk or sober

Oh, whisky you're the devil
you're leading me astray
over hills and mountains
and to Amerikay
you're sweetness from the Bleachner
and spunkier than tea
oh whisky you're my darling drunk or sober

Really? I'll have to check that out.

I'm surprised you remembered my fondness of the auld Jacobite music.

In honor of that, I'll propose a toast!

(The way you do it, is you have a glass or pitcher of water in front of you, and when you say "To the King!" you pass the glass over the water-meaning to the Stuart king-in the modern British military they remove the water from the table when they do toasts to prevent this.)

Gentlemen! To the King o'er the main!

This'd be the song I'd sing next (sorry about the Midi file, but its the only one I could find that had the melody too)

No, I've never heard of Ms. Aiken, though I still consider myself a kid, so its possible that your question could be answered yes.

I'm a Yank and not much of a Royalist, so my attachment to the Jacobite cause is strictly related to the music. Hell, I'd probably fight against them if somehow I was sent back in time, because if they'd win we wouldn't get such wonderful songs.

Also, I hear a pub in NY is banning Danny Boy because its depressing and written by an Englishmen.

So how about a good WWI song: Who Stole the Rum Last Night?

Funny story, that would actually make a great 76th song, based solely on the title and the final night of D*C last year.

Also, Magda said to tell everyone hello from down under, and she send lots of love and hugs. She is busy packing, as her trip begins very shortly now.

Well, here's the lyrics; pretty good for a unit methinks.

Who stole the rum last night?
Tune: Who were you with last night?

Who stole the rum last night?
Who stole the rum last night?
Was it the sergeant who lifted the jar?
Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Who stole the rum last night?
Out in the pale moon light?
I’m going to tell the colonel
When I get back.
You stole the rum last night

Not sure how you'll find the melody though; its pretty simple and anyone can sing along (I've got it on an old cassette tape, coupled with "I Want to Go Home")
Edit: I know the tune on Harmonica, and I've got a book somewhere that tells me what the translation is (7 Draw=which note on the staff). If any of you folks know music and are interested I could probably write it out with the lyrics so you know how it goes. Its a fun little song.

You're a man after my own heart Veteran! I love that song. If you're a Union Man(our Civil War, not theirs), I'll fire back at you with a Union song that uses the same tune. But till then, here's another popular WWI song of Ireland (one of my personal favorites).

To save space I'll only put the chorus and I'll like a site with the full lyrics and a midi file of it (actually ain't that bad as midi's go).

Quote:

It's a long way to Tipperary,
It's a long way to go.
It's a long way to Tipperary
To the sweetest girl I know.
Goodbye Piccadilly,
Farewell Leicester Square,
It's a long, long way to Tipperary,
But my heart lies there.

CHAPTERANDVERSE

Greetings from the emerald isle

"By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young girl calling
Micheal they are taking you away
For you stole Trevelyn's corn
So the young might see the morn.
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay.

Low lie the Fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly.
Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely 'round the Fields of Athenry.

By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young man calling
Nothing matter Mary when your free,
Against the Famine and the Crown
I rebelled they ran me down
Now you must raise our child with dignity.

Low lie the Fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly.
Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely 'round the Fields of Athenry.

By a lonely harbor wall
She watched the last star falling
As that prison ship sailed out against the sky
Sure she'll wait and hope and pray
For her love in Botany Bay
It's so lonely 'round the Fields of Athenry."

Proof folks that no one does tragedy and general misery like us! Something to sob into your whisky to.

Merry springbreak to you, [insert-name]flan. Mine was last week and it was the best time I'd had in a year.

Does your magical pitcher do baileys ?

It does everything, no matter what you ask (even coffee and coke), and can pour two seperate drinks into two seperate glasses (like lemonade and water)

Is anyone else in here enough of a fantasy (and a Mercedes Lackey) freak to know what book I'm getting this magical pitcher from?

Hint- The chronology in the series this is in is confused because there's a prequel to the series concerning a secondary character, and then there was a combined book made out of the original first two books....
