I got some really good news from Chris Buchanan (President of Mutant Enemy):

"We are getting pretty close on the movie and hopefully we'll have
some "official" news soon.  It seems that the DVDs are doing really
well (e.g. better than Fox anticipated) and that there have been significant
re-orders (an unusual thing for this type of program).  Of course, we
weren't that surprised but what can you do."

He also said:

"Universal seems to be willing to make the movie (crossing fingers,
touching wood, lighting candles), but we still have a few (non-creative)
hurdles to cross."

His full comments can be read at: www.fireflymovie.com/news.html

Good stuff! Also it's great Chris B passed important comments to www.fireflymovie.com. We now have a good source for FF movie info.

I am somewhat mystified, though, about the "re-doubling efforts" -- cf. your separate post -- since many fans are working their butts off to promote the Firefly world and movie. As per your example, Ain't It Cool News, TV reporter Herc there is a huge fan of the Whedon 'verse and regularly posts stuff about FF. Amazon.com has a massive review file, which is probably fanning the flames of Firefly fervour, and these boards FFF.net and the main board at Prospero are hot traffic zones.
What are we missing again?

Thnx Jeremy.

Nothing specific. I just wanted to let everybody know that time is of the essence, and now would not be a good time to slack off.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

That is absolutely fantastic news Jaysedai!!! Thanks for posting it.

I especially liked this part:

"We really appreciate all of the fan efforts on the show's behalf and I am personally helping out on the DVDs to soldiers’ project. So just tell everybody and thanks for all their efforts. I read the boards daily and all of the great local input (where the DVDs are sold out, what the reviewers are saying about the set, etc.) is always helpful."

I am happy to hear that our efforts are making a difference. I really hope it is enough to get Serenity in the air again.

Schedules? As has been noted elsewhere, the cast is out and about, trying to make a living in the business. Could be some contract froo-fa-rah that needs negotiating.

No sense speculating. We will hear the news as soon as they have something they can give to the public. Joss & ME will not leave us in the dark any longer than they have to.

Anyone else going to do something special on the day the official movie news comes out?

I'm planning to file dozens of collections cases for my City on that day. My record is 30 in a month. I've been saving them up for weeks. Its a great philosphy for law. We perform the service, we get paid.

I just wish I could shoot deliquent customers to "create an understanding". But no, we live in an age where the government needs "just cause" to use force.

Then I speculate that the DVD sales will show Universal execs to produce the movie. The movie will set records at the box office. Joss & the cast will be rolling in money & only too happy to sign to a 10 season contract w/ full creative freedom w/ the Sci Fi Channel.

Oh.....and all of will get reoccuring guest roles on the show.

Now that is speculation!

OUTLANDER

I have decided that there is no word more evil in the English language than the word "SOON". The word "SOON" should be removed from every single dictionary on the planet and any one found using the word "SOON" should be thrown in to jail for the rest of there life.

Ever since Chris Buchanan posted that "We are getting pretty close on the movie and hopefully we'll have some "official" news SOON" I have been on a heightened state of alert with the expectation that we will be getting some news SOON!

The trouble with using the word "SOON" is that it is open to interpretation on exactly now long a period of time "SOON" is. "SOON" starts off being a couple of days, then it becomes a couple of weeks and then a couple of months, until finally "SOON" just drags on indefinitely.

If we removed "SOON" from the English language people would then be forced to commit to a specific time period, couple of days, couple of weeks, couple of months etc, and I could finally stop agonising over this impending announcement of a Firefly movie that suppose to be coming SOON!!!

Alternately I would be even happier if people could substitute the word "NOW" for the word "SOON" as in "we'll have some "official" news NOW" or "A Firefly movie will be coming NOW"

According to articles found at the following urls (granted they are all from Sept 2003, it looks like the movie is a go. I can't find any news that is more recent.

I don't know if these articles were published before or after Joss Whedon said the movie wasn't a done deal.

A question that has been bothering me about the movie: if the movie is a go, will they have the same cast members for the characters?

Then SciFi would turn around and cancel it due to some fine print in the the contract after they already publicly stated that they were going to make two more seasons.

Huh? Why do you think SciFi would do this? They are the channel for a show such as Firefly. I think they would stick with it. Afterall, they've stuck with Stargate SG-1 for 6 or 7 seasons. And considering that Firefly, in my opinion, is better than Stargate SG-1 (and I'm a SG-1 fan).

I would love to see this made into a movie. I just wonder what the main last hurdle is. I mean, the DVD sales and the rabid fans are a great way to show that it will make money... All the actors said they are all on-board (got that from the mp3 of the convention in December)... Non-Creative hurdles could be money, merchandicing rights, DVD rights, what happens after the movie (e.g. they move back to the small screen)...

Gaa! It just makes me nervous to think that they are so close to getting greenlighted only to be shot down by some Exec

Anyways... I went and got shares of the movie... I suggest anyone else interested to do the same, if you haven't already done so. It costs nothing, its just for fun.

Short answer: We dont know, because we dont know who is looking at it. But it cant hurt.
Long answer: My inside sources tell me that there are some very sophisticated mathmatical models for taking information from simulated stock market and futures operations and making predictions about the future based on it. This is not a game. Some of you may remember the big dust up several months back about a "proposed terrorism futures market" to be sponsored by John Ashcroft and DARPA. The press had it wrong; no one ever proposed using real money to set up such a futures market for the general public. It probably would have been a simulation, probably only open to intelligence and military types, which could then be evaluated to try to predict at-risk targets.
Back to the point, you can tell a lot about how much people believe in a certain idea/property/person by how much money, even fake money, they will bet on it. I own 50,000 shares of "Firefly" on hsx.com. How about you?

Ah. Well, no offence meant, but it was time to cancel Farscape. Granted it wasn't kind of SciFi to publicly announce that they were going to do seasons 4 and 5 and then cancel the series after season 4. I was a fan of Farscape for the first 3 seasons and then it seemed that the creators and writers ran out of ideas and original stories. I was really getting sick of Scorpy being unkillable. He just kept coming back. If they hadn't dragged the Scorpy thing on for so long, I would have enjoyed the 4th season as well. But oh well that's just my opinion. I thought the actors did great jobs though and I'm sad to see them go but hopefully they can get more roles soon!

Firefly the movie..the hurdles.

well possibly actor's schedules, i know that Adam Baldwin is supposed to be in stargate, and the rumours are he may be offered a part in the spin-off atlantis..if so that'll be a huge hurdle.

Budget would also be one, being as it was an expensive show to produce, how much would be needed for a movie etv. Script..they always undergo re-writes

anyway, as for farscape..what a lot of farscape fans don't get is that during the time when farscape was cancelled, the previous owners of the Sci-Fi channel were trying to sell it, and thus were not pumping much money into the channel, they could only really afford one big tv show, and the viewers were going with sg-1.

Sci fi never wanted to cancel farscape, infact if you do some proper reading around the subject you'll find they tried to get 13 episodes but the Henson group couldn't afford to do that either. Thus now it may be turned into a mini series to finish off the story (which channel it'll be on i do not know)
