1) Although I've seen all the episodes, I must have missed a portion of the backstory. What is the significance of the Chinese influence throughout the series?

2) Some series that have been cancelled were brought back due to fan pressure. Obviously this has been tried, correct? Is there an effort presently to bring this show back?

The two super-powers that existed when 'The Earth That Was' was 'all used up' were China and (presumably) the US. They had there own planets, but after a time formed an alliance and the cultures mixed. Thus, the Firefly Chinese (a.k.a. an - bad - attempt at Mandarin. Though I recall someone saying that the computer voice in OoG was Cantonese).

Yes, significant efforts were made during the original airing to keep it going and afterwards as well. These efforts turned into getting anything which resulted in the movie (Joss helped a bit with that one as well ).

Any effort to get a show back now is an anomaly. As it should be. Too much time has gone by to have that show back the way it was (or even close to it).

The best hope for more official S is getting another movie made. Though that is unlikely (at least in the nearer future) because Joss is busy developing a new show (and get this, for F*X). Not sure about the status of that show though and if the strike killed it.

At this point, the only thing that we can do to get more 'Verse in our lives is to make it ourselves. There doesn't seem to be much interest in this though. The (basically one) exception is an EV Nova Mod. So, if you're into making games, whether storyline or more or otherwise, I'm sure that they'd appreciate the help. There forums are located here:

STRANGEBIRD

First of welcome to the boards! Secondly I'll leave the definitive answers to our more senior members. I do know however that the Chinese/Asian influence was never really explained on the show. And that there has always been an effort to bring Firefly back to TV. My guess is it didn't work due to the show being on Fox. The other series saved by fans were predominately on networks like NBC and CBS which do not seem to be completely staffed by tight-___ed idiots. Though Fox seems nicer now, despite all the reality TV garbage. I think we were lucky to get the first movie.

EDIT: Ignore everything I said besides Welcome. Sigmanunki pretty much answered everything.

Thanks for the info. So the "alliance" that was formed between China and the US, is this the same Alliance that Reynolds fought against? I don't suppose there was/is a book before the series that would pin more of this down?

Makes me ill when a great show like this with characters that show obvious chemistry is cancelled when shows like Farscape and the other lame space-based ones went for multiple seasons. I tried sitting through several episodes of these and after seeing Firefly just shut the DVD off after about ten minutes.

Anyhow, it looks like Nathon Fallion is finally getting some work. I liked "Drive" but that didn't last either. I saw previews for White Noise 2 that looks good.
