ooh that's a good ponder

What would your ideal birthday present be??

Mine would be two days off where I didn't have to do anything. I would sleep late, take a bubble bath, have a martini or two, eat yummy food and just drift along reading, watching tv, taking a walk or two....

I think I'd go for something along the lines of your gift. Not really something that can be wrapped up in a box. I'd be perfectly happy just having a home cooked meal and curling up on the couch with my smokin hot gf (not that I have one but for the ideal gift she'd be included ) to watch a bunch of Firefly.

Actually I supposed the smokin hot gf was the only thing missing from the equation this year. I cooked. I curled up and watched Firefly. I was pretty content with that scenario.

Oh yeah. The most fun you can have without having any fun.

Basically I deal with international students, which she is. She has a student visa, which allows her to live here and work part time. She can even work full time when she's on holidays.

BUT in order to renew a student visa (which you have to do every year) you need to attend the school. If your attendance is over 85%, they'll renew it for a year. If it's between 50% and 85%, you'll get a three month temporary visa, and have to renew that when it's done, if you attendance is then okay.

This girl had an attendance of 35%. Which basically means no way in hell is she getting a visa. To be fair, she HAD been very sick, but as far as I could see, her illness began in October. She enrolled in February.

She wanted me to say her attendance was higher than it was. I said I couldn't (which we can't. It's fraud. Colleges get shut down for less.) She would just have to show her medical certs to immigration and hope for the best. She demanded to speak to the director. He said the same thing. She got ~very~ upset, so I walked her to the bathroom, hoping to help her calm down while also gently getting her out of the office. Instead she hyperventilated, which triggered her asthma. We ended up having to call an ambulance.

I stayed with her for a bit and she's stable, but it turns out she's much sicker than we ever knew, and has been since she enrolled - even though she filled in an application form and said she had no medical issues. She's a ticking time bomb. Stress can trigger a fatal attack. And we ~still~ can't do anything for her. In fact, sick as she is, we may not be able to enrol her at all, in which case she has no hope at all of getting a student visa.

*starts typing up her CV*

Okay, so pretty much it was something totally not your fault. If anything she can be blamed for the attack AND coerced you into committing fraud which could easily cause you your job and/or teaching credentials. She might be a nice person and all but it seems she was way willing to risk something that was not hers. Not to say she was maliciously trying to make trouble. But experiencing similar issues on a daily basis here it has to be said you did very well protecting you and yours. She is there legally with some problems, not your fault. But I see people here in illicit manners always looking for excuses and patsy's. I do feel sorry for folks working hard to do things right to stay in country. But those who put others at risk in the interest of their own self gain just need to go home. Fuck 'em and feed 'em beans!

...and that's the biggest part of the problem. while her ill health is genuine, I don't think her interest in studying is. Looking at her file, she strikes me very much as someone who enrolled as a student to get a work visa (albeit restricted) That's something you see a lot. It's actually pretty much my job to stop applicants like that getting into the college.

Honestly, I think she had planned to get her status changed somehow during the year, but it took longer than she expected so she started to attend classes, only to be hit with ill health. And now she's trying to do whatever she can to stay in the country until she gets a visa that lets her work without the pesky study problem. I have no proof of that, but I've seen similar before and she really fits the category.

Her initial hyperventilating *was* attention seeking, along with of course her genuine upset at the situation, but of course it triggered her asthma. Damn near killed her. She stopped breathing altogether more than once.

So I have every reason in the world not to enrol this girl in the college, but telling her so is going to trigger more theatrics and could even kill her.

There is a bright side to this, believe it or not. The college had a share of pretty dodgy students, but they'd started to attend classes and follow the rules when they heard about the new, super strict Registrar. When they find out I almost killed a student and still didn't bend the rules, my reputation will be fucking iron clad.

A friend of mine runs the maintance departmrnt for a country club and they hire students on these visas all the time. They claim they are studing English and want to witness it spoken in its natural surroundings. So they hop from city to city to learn the dialects of the different regions of the United States. They don't attend any school at all. I think these visas only last one year and then they have to return. He has had students from every part of the globe. From Chile to Ukraine. Since they have housing right on the country club grounds they get rent free while they work there. Do they spend. Buying things they can't get back home. With a full time job and no rent they can do alright for themselves.

HUGS DTH oh sweety that so wasn't your fault. I had asthma as a kid ( still do in a minor way ) and if she tried to gain sympathy by triggering an attack ( which is really easy to do if you accelerate your breathing while you are under stress) it's not even a little bit your fault...she made the choice. She triggered the attack intentionally as emotional blackmail to make you sympathize and lie for her... she's a bitch plain and simple. Willing to use her condition and sympathy to break rules and get her own way. She's trying to use your compassion against you... nothing is more despicable... so don't you fret for one tiny little minute. That is so not your fault... she just miscalculated when she triggered and it escalated out of her control( which happens when you do that...) I used to do that to my mom when I was little. I'd hold my breath then start the fast breathing to make her do what I wanted ( I was 3 at the time) Never give in to a tantrum be it adult or child...HUGS and loves

You'd think so, wouldn't you? But somehow I always end up in very un-hippie jobs. Fraud detection, Property Claims analysis, Information Security... even when I switch to teaching, somehow I end up in admin enforcing the rules.

I need a hippie job. What kind of work do hippies do? Any other hippies I know don't seem to have jobs.

I haven't done anything noteworthy lately. I'm merely surviving right now. Work is psychotic. Horse is fairly sane. I've finished Veronica Mars and have that empty feeling of not getting to live with these characters anymore. Why do all the good shows get cancelled and crap like ER (well...it's become crap) go on for over 10 years?

When would I like to retire: Now. I had one of those 'this is my life?' moments on Sunday night where the next 20 years just stretches out before you in a sad routine of work and not work time. I should get all courageous and adventurous and quit this job and do something real with my life. But then I remember how much I like riding and how much money that all costs.

Best birthday present or activity? Just hanging with friends is good for me. Add a good ride that day and you've got about as perfect as perfect can be.

So glad to see ya drop by. It's been fairly quiet in these parts. Everyone is just so busy at different times that it gets difficult to catch up with everyone. Yeah, the lack of intelligent programming is getting to me too. Oh yes. F*#@ 'em all. I'm just down on the monotony and endlessness of work. I want to retire now. I decided on Thursday that I will be independently weathly. 'Course I also decided that the alphabet needs some rearranging. "Y" deserves a place of respect in the alphabet. Afterall, it is a consonant that can sometimes be a vowel. Don't you think it should come before "X" which, while a very cool letter, is mostly useless and should be paired with it's equally useless partner, "Z"? So from now on, it will not longer be 'xyz' but 'yxz'. Either scenario has the same likelihood of happening, which is to say nil.

:D
