For those who weren't aware (or maybe just forgot), the Firefly/Serenity DVDs were launched to the International Space Station aboard Atlantis on STS-117 last year...
http://breakingatmo.com/

I just stumbled across NASA's little collection of HD video clips...
http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/hd/HDGalleryCollection_archive_1.html
...which includes the launch of STS-117 Atlantis!

After watching launches on regular analog TV since I was a kid, then settling for watching pixellated little Quicktime clips downloaded off of NASA's website the rest of the time, I was STUNNED by these!
It's like looking out a window!

Y'know, recently I've had the burning desire to travel to Florida and see a launch before the Shuttle's retired.
Now I'm not in so much of a hurry to brave the humidity & mosquitoes!

Hey CL, look at the top of this page. So far, 50 have read this page (including me). At least a few of us have gone to this website to take a look at all the pretty pictures. So, yes, we're interested!!

You're so welcome!

I almost passed out when I first saw 'em — it's like I was peekin' out from a bunker right next to the pad!

Thanks for the post--I really miss NASA tv. It was usually on 24/7 when the shuttle was up.

Here's a question--is there a site or place where you can download or purchase extensive mission recordings from the Mercury, Gemini or Apollo missions?

I live in Florida and to my shame have not yet made it for a launch. Every time I make plans to see one the weather doesn't cooperate. We only have a few more years till the Shuttle program is scraped, so I'll need to tell my boss where my priorities lie. Is it worth having to find a new job to see a Shuttle launch. I'm betting it is.

Yeah, I'd heard about it through HobbySpace...
http://hobbyspace.com/Simulators/index.html
...but it took forever to get released, IIRC, and then it ended up costing $24.95 if you wanted to run more than just the last couple of minutes of the Apollo 11 landing.

By that time, I'd discovered Orbiter < http://www.orbitersim.com>, which is possibly the greatest FREEware simulator ever developed!

Sadly, I don't have a PC anymore, and they don't port any of these great programs for the Mac.

Don't forget, there is also a Serenity ship for Orbiter. It was pulled from distribution, but I still have the archive if anyone wants a copy of it. You get a lot of respect for Wash, after trying to fly that. It took me hours before I could use those engine pods properly...
...and yes, I can do a crazy Ivan ;)... If I really, really have to.

Same here. I did get to see a landing once, though (sort of). When i was living in Austin, I was heading home from work one night. As I got out of my car in our driveway, I heard what sounded like an especially loud airplane coming in, and when I looked up, I saw what looked like an unusually large plane with an odd contrail. When I got inside, my roomates were watching the news and talking about how the Shuttle was supposed to fly over Austin as it came in for a landing.

I didn't see much, but it was cool to even catch a glimpse of something that had been tooling around in space for a few days.

"And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking...
Coming around to rise up behind you again..."
