So, I was watching 'Ariel' as shown today on Sci-Fi channel. Jayne said something, at the beginning scene, that was dubbed over (censored out). So I had to go check the shooting script. Simon says something about the food being (not) good, and Jayne says, "It smells like crotch." The Sci-Fi channel, in all it witless glory, silenced out 'crotch'.

Does that seem really, really odd to anyone else? I laughed my pi gu off, regardless.

I noticed that as well. Kinda annoyed me. Another thing, how did they handle Mal's nudity? Did they show his rear or did they edit it or put a blurring dot thingy? I missed the last half of the episode.

This isn't the first time Jayne's line has been censored. Twice before during marathons on Sci-Fi the word crotch has been deleted. Apparently someone in their S&P department doesn't like the idea of eating crotch.

Hopefully not, but still. There are far worse words and blanking out crotch hardly changes the meaning of the line. If anything it makes it worse, leaves those who are not familiar with the line a blank to fill in with whatever they might expect. Which is probably worse than crotch.

It's just silly. They can say sh*t and d*mn on Scifi and swear all sorts of profanities in Chinese... but to imply your food smells like crotch... that's just too far *dripping sarcasm*. That censor has a problem with crotch odors I'd imagine. Maybe it made him/her uncomfortable.

Ok now I'm going to try and get that image out of my head and get back to sleep.

Point of interest. I've actually been served food I thought smelled like crotch before. Needless to say I never ate at the restaurant again.

You know, I noticed that in the Spanish translation of that episode the line had been changed, too. I'm not fluent, but I caught the word 'basura' there, which means 'garbage'. I thought it an odd substitution to make, and figured maybe it wouldn't translate well any other way. But then last time there was a marathon and I caught that, I wondered if it had actually been deemed obscene. Very strange.

Oh, and they put a cloud of blowing dust over Mal's nekkidness.

They edited crotch? What's wrong with that? I also don't see what's so bad about a bare ass. This is indeed very strange censoring but not the strangest I've ever come across. Has anyone here ever seen the TV edit of Mallrats? Wiedest censoring ever!
There's a bit were Brody is talking about farting while his girlfriend went down on him. I understand the issues there might be with this topic of conversation but the way they dubbed it makes NO sense. Going down becomes making out. Good so far. Farting becomes...puking? How is this better? Instead of farting on his girlfriend he blows chunks all over her. That's classy. and the final baffling line of "When I'm relaxed, I puke." Just wierd.
