Hey y'all,

I know there's always murmuring about how we'd all like Firefly back, and there are petitions and things to have it renewed.

I am wondering, though - what are the legal reasons it hasn't been continued? I know that I've read somewhere that Fox won't release the rights, or that to make the film Universal had to agree to not produce the series, or something...

Anyone have links to that info, or insight as to what's going on?

HELL'S KITTEN

FOX owns the television rights.
Universal owns the movie rights.
That's about it, way simplified.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

What I'm about to say might sound negative, but when it comes to Firefly and Serenity I am never negative, but I do try to be realistic.

The reason Firefly was canceled was that not enough people were watching it. The reason we don't have a sequel to Serenity (yet) is that not enough people paid to see it in the theater. Over a long stretch of time both have done very well on DVD. That is probably our best bet to get more, when TPTB notice that it continues to make money.

Aw, well, I'm all for realism! And all of that makes sense.

Do you guys have links to interviews or blog posts that discuss these? I'm trying to get some info together about it all.

Also useful would be the numbers involved...dvd sales, film revenue, etc?

STOWEAWAY

I believe numbers and revenue and such have all been well-guarded by both F*x and Universal. If I'm not mistaken, only initial box office results for Serenity are publicly available.
The film industry is not as transparent as we wish it was.
So we only have quotes, like the one most recently from Joss, to help clue us in to sales results. And his wasn't even specific. He only said that DVD sales were good and that's why we go the Collectors Edition. And then went on to say that hope for a sequel lies with the sales of the Collectors Edition.
More solid numbers would probably go a long way in this community to help boost (or quell) hope. If you find any, please do share them with us.

You may have more luck asking for this information at the prospero boards where more of the actual creation history seems to get discussed more by those in the know. Good luck! Their address is http://forums.prospero.com/foxfirefly/start
