Low down dirty deceiver.

Deceiver! I don’t know about other browncoats but as for me I love it when a writer can throw me for a loop with misdirection. You know like when you think the story is going one way then it takes an about-face in another direction. Joss and the writers of Firefly seem to have become masters at this, I love it. Watching a tv show or movie isn’t near as exciting as when someone can get shocked or surprised by something they had no idea was coming. Now, that may be different for different people but in the Joss FF verse I think I can truly say that it happened a lot for many of us. On that thought I decided to post the things that caught me off-guard in the Serenity pilot episode. Those little things that came outta left field and hit me broadside like a train at a foggy intersection.

First; Dobson shooting Kaylee. I knew the Alliance mole on Serenity was trouble but I had no idea that he would put a hole through the ships only mechanic. Such a pretty one as well. I remember thinking “ Hell no Joss you can’t kill off Kaylee. First , I remembered seeing her in Serenity so what the Hell!!” Deception number1.

Second; Mal confronts Doc Simon in the ships cargo bay telling him Kaylee’s dead. “What the heck!!” You can see the surprise in the doctor’s face and I was thinking the first time I watched the pilot, “How are they going to get around this part of the story?”
Extension of deception number1

Thirdly; Mal on the ships bridge . He and the crew laughing it up at Doc Simon expense. Who coulda guessed capt Reynolds was such a good bald faced…lie….deciver? Deception3

Deception4; Mal tossing the bit of treasure he’d stolen off the Alliance ship to Patience, then she in turn unwraps it and takes a bite. The treasure isn’t gold or any other precious metal. Just food stuffs for needy families living a rim world existence. You got me Joss….lol.

I’m sure there are others I’m not thinking of right now from the pilot esp. Do any other browncoats have moments where they had to laugh at themselves for being led in the wrong direction? Great writing from this tv series. Hope we get to see more.

I'd say Mal's kill shot on Dobson (without so much as breaking stride) was quite a surprise. Just when we thought there was going to be a tense standoff, negotiation, or capitulation... bang!

That's the scene that really floored me and hooked me on Firefly.

How? It was foreshadowed several times in different ways just before it happened. It was obvious he was going to shoot somebody.

Yepper Doncoat that is one of those moments that I’d forgotten about. With Dobson nabbing River I thought there would be more of his trickery mixed in with some Mal negotiation. I even thought that River may somehow have to free herself. But in Joss’ wisdom there be an easy solution to the problem. Quick bullet to the brainpan, simple and permanent.

What about when the passengers are boarding and the camera pans to Simon from behind the box. He looks so reptillian and evil. And Dobson is so cute and clumsy. Then Whendon waves his wand/pen and all is revealed to be opposite of what we've been set up to believe.

Don't forget "Bushwacked" - an almost cliched horror story gets all turned upside down when the Alliance ship shows up out of absolutely nowhere - you almost wish it WAS reavers!

In Pilot, part of the Kaylee dead deception was when she says (about River) she's so pretty, then her hand/arm goes limp from Mal's hand - Joss said this was intentionally done to indicate Kaylee may have died, and this is just after Kaylee says she is so cold - common feeling of those dying from low blood volume.

In OoG, the scene where Mal tricks Wash into agreeing to boost the signal.

In Train Job, when Jayne is about to take over, and then he wonders about the flies of light (?Fireflies?). Wash didn't see that coming.

In war Stories, when Kaylee is retreating, the goons are gonna take over Serenity -who saw River saving the day, with her eyes closed?

I quite like the bit in "The Message" when the post is being brought out, there's this big box with a small one perched on top. You instantly think "What's in the box, what they planning?" when all of a sudden "The little one's for Cobb" and we actually see the side of Jayne that don't normally get shown, a caring side as his mother's made a cunning hat for him

Anybody who disagrees with any of this violently can do so. But no matter what you do, "You can't take the sky from me".

Kolshak the Night Stalker 70s tv show. The Dresden Files is a modern updated version also The Special Unit very similar. I liked them both and yet they cancelled them like Firefly. Shoot. The new Night Stalker lacked something.

PirateCat I remember the “Night Stalker”. If I’m thinking right it came on down here Friday evening when I was a young sprout. Me and my neighborhood buddies would watch it and that set the stage for many a spooky story on those nights let me tell ya. Classic tv, it’s always fun to take a trip back in time.

Kolchak was playyed by the late great Darren McGavin, who didn't get as many juicy roles because he stayed in New York. A fave Ahnold flik was Raw Deal, with Darren.

Also in Night Stalker was Richard Anderson who also played Oscar Goldman in Bionic Woman and Six Million Dollar Man - wish I could find that one on DVD!
