Please, someone who actually knows, post here.

Haken has a new poll up, maybe it will catch the eye of Chris Buchanan or someone who can tell us.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

An informed Browncoat is an effective Browncoat.

We are not informed.

Why would it be anyone other than Fox? Universal are not making a TV show, so they would not be willing to pay for the TV rights. Fox are not in the business of giving IP away, so I doubt TV rights were included in the deal for no reason.

You make a good point, I'm inclined to agree with you (unfortunately).

But Uni might have wanted all rights including TV comic book merchindizing etc. I would dout a company that large would want only film rights when most of the money from that kind of movie will most likely come in merchandizing. Plus since they own Sci-fi (and have since merged with NBC) they might want to do the show if the movie is a hit. Also I think FOX might have been willing to sale it for a choice price since they weren't palnning on doing much if anything with the show anyway.

....Thus the present conundrum. Tash and I had the same conversation Scafell and Early are having, almost word for word it seems, about a week ago.

We came to the unfortunate conclusion that we didn't know.

Intelectual proplerty rights can be sold but I don't think that they can't be split up into separate parts such as rights for TV and rights for movie. So, if Universal owns the rights to "Firefly" or purchases them in the future, then the fate of Firefly is in their hands. Universal could choose to make a movie, make a tv show, a mini-series, or even make Firefly: The Ride at Universal Studios if they wanted to.

"Rights" is a blurred, crazy cutthroat scramble for the best contract dealing with very specific rights.

I think "rights" can be divided a million ways, in the worst of circumstances. Hope not in Joss's case.

Well, after 666 votes, Fox has the lead, but not by much. The poll is pretty evenly divided, how interesting.

I was thinking about what a simple question this is. "Who owns the television rights to Firefly?"

My new idea is that Joss is asking himself this question and so are people at Universal and Fox, as we wait for news.

My new guess is that no one knows right now. It's up in the air. Is this possible?

I'm sure somebody knows, just not anyone who visits FFF.net regularly. I'm sure that there's some lawyers at Fox and Universal who know in excrutiating detail who owns the TV rights to Firefly.

Okay, so someone knows. But it seems that we aren't supposed to know or something.

I can picture the Board meeting now:

Fox P.R. Manager: "Sir, I received a memo ordering us to remain silent about owning the television rights to Firefly."

Fox Exec.: "Yes, we received a request from the United Postal Service. Too many postcards being sent this time of year, they can't handle the load. After Valentine's Day we can start returning phone calls."

But what exactly are we asking?

Are we asking about specifically the TV broadcasting rights for the first season? just for over-the-air, just cable, or both? Are we asking if Fox has the right to broadcast some number of episodes for certain number of years (or certain period of time)? Fox doesn't pay for the entire concept, did they? They just pay for the specific rights for a number of episodes, and maybe options for a couple more episodes. No lawyer would let the production company give it all away, it's always signed and sold for very specific terms.
