ah, yes... Jeepy did this to me a few months back. you're certain the battery is all right? did you actually take it in and have it tested? i thought my Jeep's problem was the starter (clickidy click click, nothin), but was then convinced to test the battery first. sure enough, while i could still power the windows and lights, there wasn't enough charge left for the starter. good thing, though, since batteries are cheaper than a new starter. ^^

but what do i know.

I'm hoping like hell that it will just be the battery. I think that's still under warranty even. I assume that their $98 diagnostic will include checking the battery.

The other thing I didn't mention is that I had to back it out of my parking spot for the tow guy. It was on a slight incline so it just rolled out in neutral. It was not a good experience though. The wheel was dang hard to turn. The breaks were barely working. I had to hand brake a bit just to slow it to a stop. That whole experience made me more nervous that it's something big wrong with it.

guess you've never driven an older car without power steering or power breaks?
when the battery is dead or the engine isn't running, you're not going to get power anything.
it's not a symptom of anything more nefarious.

hell, i drove my Jeep for weeks without breaks... dangerous and foolhardy, sure, but i'm still alive. XD

Ah the good old days. Loved the Cougar I drove for a bit ('68). 289 needed a quart of oil every two tor three days, no parking sprag in the tranny so it had to be blocked, manual steering, brakes were crap, but the vacuum headlight covers and wind shield wiper pedal still worked. Such a cool car.

Nuh uh. My first car was an 81 tercel. No power steering at least. Not sure about the breaks. This was worse than that car ever was though. The breaks was the worst part.

Anyway I think I'm gonna call the dealership. I can't take the suspense any longer.

OOH and I have an important ponder... Where do the socks go??? When you do your laundry and one sock goes missing... where is it?? Is there some weird black hole in the dryer? Is it aliens? Do socks have a really active social life and just occasionally wander off??
I must know as my beloved moose socks are one sock short of a pair....

No answer from mechanic guy. I guess it's good that he's not just sitting by the phone. It might mean he's working. yay!

As for the socks that's easy. My cat eats them. I've found half eaten socks plenty of times. She regularly eats any available shoe laces, kleenex and has attempted to eat a blanket and a polo shirt. She didn't finish either of the last two though.

I think IAMS has a serious cotton deficiency in their cat food formula.

Now when my cat finds the time to sneak out of the apartment, scurry over to Utah and somehow get into your dryer. That's the real question.

Never seen my cats eat kleenex though one of my dogs does.. hmm maybe pet food is deficient in cotton fiber or something...

Seriously the cat is crazy. She'll eat toilet paper too. I keep a hand towel over the toilet roll at all times. The cat is relentless though. I always have like 3 kleenex in my pocket since I wear hard contacts and at any moment they can go insane and make my eyes water like mad and my nose starts running. Normally this doesn't happen but one time a month so I just keep transfering the kleenex until they get old and ratty. I used to put them in my dresser to keep them away from the kitty. They she learned how to crawl up through the bottom of the dresser into the drawer and find them even when burried under some clothes. So, I went to putting them in this little wooden box I have. She knew they were in there though and would wrestle with the thing all night waking me up all the time. Now the wooden box is in my closet and when I open it up she's right up on the shelf trying to get in the box. And if somehow she does get ahold of a kleenex and I go to get it from her then she actually hisses. This cat never bites or hisses or does anything mean. So, she's serious when it comes to kleenex.

Somehow she hasn't figured out that upside down kleenex boxes are a much easier target than a wooden box. I'm pretty happy about that though.

Yay dealership called back and they claim a new battery fixed the problem. Seems really odd to me and I guess I should have tried to get someone to give me a jump but whatever I'll take it. I'm just gonna go ahead and be pesimistic and expect this to happen again in about 3 days just to find out it's the alternator or something. Somehow I just don't trust that $98 diagnostic.

ok I understand your phobia of the diagnostic.. had a bad Tunex experience in which I kept telling them to check one thing and they kept assuring me it was fine and replaced a variety of other things in the car. Eventually took it to the dealership and in 5 min they called back said it was the thing I'd asked Tunex to check and they fixed it... problem solved.

it's really not that unusual.

batteries are sneaky beasties. you can literally be driving around all fine, park the car for a tiny amount of time, then when you come back to go again, poof! battery doesn't have enough amps (or is that volts?) to ignite the starter, even though it could still run the windows or radio.

don't worry ^__^

I find it dumb that mazda's design is to not even try the engine if the battery supposedly doesn't have enough juice though. Are they really just trying to save me a little juice to work the radio while I wait for the tow truck or something? I mean it didn't even attempt to crank the engine when I turned the key. At least take a shot. Or give me some sort of indicator light to tell me what's up. Maybe the beeping could give me a code I could look up in the owner's manual. Anything!

Bah!

Anyway I'm still happy that it's just the battery.

dear, it's not Mazda's "design."
it's the fundamentals of electricity.

if the battery does not have enough charge to ignite the starter, the starter won't ignite. simple as. there's no circuit in the vehicle that says "oh, come on, i know you're low on amps and all, but please do just try it once? for me?" XD

and now that you have this experience, if it happens again, you might check the battery first.

The reason why you have enough charge for the radio but not to start the car is the same reason as that whenever you go shopping you never have quite enough money to buy everything you want, you always have to give a lot of stuff up lol. But I'm glad that it was a relatively easy problem to fix.

Maybe I'm just not doing a good job at describing it but I'm telling you this was weird. Even the guy who towed me was like "I have no idea what's wrong. I hope it's just your battery but I've never seen that".

I've had battery problems in cars before and it was nothing like that. In my old toyota when I turn the key it would at least try the engine and all the dash lights would fade and stuff.

Anyway it was all under warranty so I didn't have to pay anything. Sorta nice to just walk up get the keys and drive off without even signing anything.

I end up staring at the ceiling being all kinds of awake and bored.

Sometimes I get up and move out into the livingroom and lay on the couch. A change of venue in sometimes all it takes. Not always but sometimes.

I pretty much follow the Kelkhil method. Though I don't usually change venues. I just roll around trying to get my brain to stop thinking and just fall asleep. Sometimes I'll turn on the tv and there's never anything good on in the middle of the night so that helps make me sleepy to some extent. Doesn't really help though. The second I turn it off my brain goes right back to what was keeping me awake in the first place.

What I do is I try to get to bed at about 9-ish or so, and then when I can't get to sleep within an hour, I'll just get back up and do something. I don't really need a lot of sleep- I'll be grouchy whenever I wake up, but when I actually wake up instead of walking around like a zombie, I can't get back to sleep early so I have to wait untill 9 (that's the earliest I've ever been able to fall asleep) and then try.

Hi to all the shiny imponderables....

I just know you've missed me terribly (heh). I'be missed you all. I haven't had much time the last week or so. Seems I go on vacation and then come back to work to 20 or so new clients. Yea me...or not. There's a ton of work staring me in the face.

Vacation was great although I didn't accomplish everything on my list. I didn't make it into the gym ONCE the entire week. Oh well. I did go running almost every morning. I also watched Waitress (good) and Knocked-Up (hilarious). Watched the collector's edition of Serenity. Started Veronica Mars and must admit that I am a sad pathetic loser for not watching it on air (although I don't have cable so I wouldn't really have been able to watch anyway). Rode the horse A LOT. 'Twas a good time and I'm really wishing I could be RICH, RICH, RICH (insert maniacal laugh here) so I didn't HAVE to work at all. Any sugar daddies are welcome to come a-knockin' J/K. Or not...if you're the right type of sugar. ;)

Zeek...the whole 'no steering or brakes' sounds awfully normal for the situation you described. My Jeep does that when it's not on. Roll out of a parking spot and your lucky if you can turn or stop. Nothing nefarious, IMO.

Sleep and excess energy? What is this thing called 'excess energy?' I know not of it. Unless I've had caffeine too late in the day. Then sleep is just not going to happen so I don't evey try until I'm tired. It does take me about 45 minutes to fall asleep on any given night (I'm a natural night owl in an early bird world), so I read or do a crossword or sudoku until I can hardly keep my eyes open...then sleep comes quick.

Smiles to all...and I will try to check in more regularly. Stupid work. Blah.

Glad to see ya about 'bug. Hopefully the vacation was at least restful. Needless to say vacations are always too short and require that wish to be rich to ensure the striving for another one. Hugs and glad to see ya around.
