As requested in another thread, here shall be a list.

Top 10 reason Firefly was cancelled, as voted by Fireflyfans.
10. Network was gonna pre-empt episodes for Olympic Toenail-Clipping Live Broadcasts anyhow.

9. The Network Execs are really Trekkies and they didn't want a show that was light years better than their beloved franchise.

8. It was more real than reality TV.

7. The lower ranking Execs went to the Big Boss and said, "Firefly is too intelligent and doesn't fit into any established genre. Nobody here can work out how to promote it or when it should run. Basically we can't sell Firefly." The Big Boss (who had commissioned the show in the first place) looked them in the eye and said, "You can sell Firefly." Unfortunately they misheard him.

6. George Lucas phoned Fox Network President and said, "Look Bub, I can buy and sell your measley network any time I want. This Firefly thing you got...get rid of it!...NOW!...it's making my work look ridiculous; and a man in my position cannot be made to look ridiculous.

5. Firebug has no aliens, so network Executives had no characters to relate to or empathize with.

4. Fox had an ongoing bet with both WB and UPN networks to see who can cancel the most shows in one year.

3. The Blue Man Group sued for defamation.

2. Network could not find which formula it fit into. Where's the ditzy bimbo? The hooker is the most distinguished and respected character? Where's the fashionable metrosexual? The ruthless evil, stupid boss? The neurotic jewish sidekick? Too unfocused allegories to evil Bush and sweet lovable Taliban. And why no miniskirts in the future?

And the #1 reason...
1. Flamefly has no blondes in primary cast, so network executives in Southern California considered it too unrealistic.

Here are the original possibilities discussed and proposed (further votes, additions, and comments welcome - vote using numbers of the proposals):
I do not yet have 10, but I conjured you all might contribute. If more than 10 are provided, they'll be included.

1. Firebug has no aliens, so network executives had no characters to relate to or empathize with.
2. Flamefly has no blondes in primary cast, so network executives in SoCal considered it too unrealistic.
3. With no aliens, network executives were not obliged to indulge professional courtesy.
4. Nathan Fillion booked a meeting with the show producer, and said the cast and crew were happy and enthusiastic to come to work every day, and thanked him for producing the show (reportedly a first in Hollywood), so network executives needed to cancel the show to discourage this sort of thing.

7. The Networks Execs decided that a creator can't have three 'home run' TV shows in a row, so cheated by cancelling the latest (at the time) from Joss.

8. The Execs are really Trekkies and they didn't want a show that was light years better than their beloved franchise. (No offence to fans, I like ST too).

9. They wanted to steal Nathan for a long running show about a car race across America, so the show had to be cancelled so he would become available.

10. It was more real than reality TV.

Here's my conspiracy theory idea: the Network A_holes responsible, always knew how good it was going to be, but had no intention of ever letting it continue, as the evil sods anticipated what a great marketing tool it was going to be. That's what I choose to believe, otherwise I would go insane trying to figure out why so many crappy TV shows get more than one season. It's either that, or the scarier thought that the main viewing audience is populated by the intellectually undernourished.

Too bad this turns out to be a 'funny' thread. I was actually hoping to discuss some real reasons. Here's one:

1): FOX is owned by Bush and cohorts, who didn't care much for the anti-Alliance attitude in a time of 'war'. All this "Never to be under the heel of nobody, ever again" crap might just give the good folks back home some bad ideas.

I actually firmly believe this to be completely true.
The amount of friends, acquaintances and others that I would normally consider to be intelligent, thoughtful and free-thinking humans who sit there and religiously watch crappy reality TV.

Using Big Brother as the example:
They'll watch all the variations of the program.
They'll make sure they are in to see it all.
If for some reason they can't be in they'll record it.
Eviction night is like some holy ritual. You'll go to hell if you should dare call them whilst it's on.

Yet when it comes to a show that actually requires your attention to follow it (Firefly, Lost and any other with ongoing plot points) they don't watch/record every episode and then wonder why they can't figure out what's going on. So then they stop watching.
Idiots.

To adapt a famous quote (that I'll use as my tag now):

"We few, we happy few, we band of Browncoats".

Anyway onto another reason:

13. F*x needed to be good at something, so they decided to be good at cancelling TV shows.

Also, the Republican Party is a more "leave it ((the general populace)) alone to fend for themselves..." ya know... be all... in'pendent and all that....

This should probably remain in RWED but the Alliance are quite like the Republicans (pre-emptive wars, a military bent, close ties to big business) especially if you go for the civil war link (Lincoln was a Republican too).

Also Joss is no fan of the Republican party - he even apologised to us for Bush's re-election at the rough cut premiere in the UK.

But hey, everyone interprets art in their own way.

I'm trying to remember how many times the democratic party waged wars to make other governments act as they saw fit resulting in lasting occupation of the lands previously belonging to the other governments.

I think the problem may be that I'm too young, The vast majority of the wars this country has been in were waged well before I existed and I'm no historian.

Since you brought this up I would like you to enlighten me. What was the first war that the Democratic Party waged to bring others under their rule? What is the most recent war the Democratic Party waged to bring others under their rule?

After the Louisiana Purchase and the resulting domestication of the west, plus Seward's Folly, America has resisted Imperial expansion policies. Territories like Peurto Rico and Hawaii have to apply for statehood.

After FDR promised the America voters that he would absolutely not engage in World War II, the Japanese argue he incited them to attack Pearl Harbor, and FDR knew they were attacking Pearl Harbor, but needed these American deaths to compel the will of Americans to allow him to engage in the War he promised he would not. After WWII, we have occupied many "territories" in the Pacific.
Korea was under Truman. You may have heard we are still there, a continuous presence for 50 years.
Veitnam was started under JFK, and expanded under LBJ. We do not occupy South Veitnam, because it is occupied by North Veitnam.

FDR, Truman, JFK, and LBJ were Democrats.

Not necessarily a Democrat -vs- Republican question, but falls squarely on LIBERALS; the inventors of political correctness, birth contol pills for 5th graders, et al. And since LIBERALS are far more likely to be Democrats, then I say The Democrats ARE The Alliance.

#23. Since the Pilot would clearly win an Emmy for ground-breaking SFX if ever aired, they had to cancel the series as an attempt to keep ground-breaking shows out of their lineup. Network execs really hate having Award-winning shows on this network.

# whatever:
We all know why Firefly was cancelled: Bad ratings. ...You know, like X-Files had in its first season.

F*X are a bunch of morons. OTOH, Summer is the best thing in Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles.

As to the RWED portion of this discussion:
Folks who argue that the Alliance are synonymous with either Democrats or Republicans are missing the whole point. It takes both Republicans and Democrats to make up the mess we call Government. Or as Mal would put it, "Everyone can be interfered with or ignored. Equally."

Our government is a mish-mosh of the worst ideas of both our ruling parties. Come to grips with it... Because believe it or not, you asked for it; by pitting one party against the other, instead of insisting on cooperation between the two. The more militant you are -- Left or Right -- the more you ensure that the American people will never have decent, responsible governance. ...And you don't care, as long as 'your side' wins; and so, we all lose.

Respectfully,

zoid

P.S.
American War of Independence: started by Independents

American Civil War: started by Northern Republicans and Southern Democrats, a political situation which has undergone a geographic pole reversal; so, you pick 'em.

Spanish American War: Democrats

World War I: Democrats ("War to end all wars")

World War II: Democrats (second war to end all wars, and to make Europe safe for democracy)

Korean War: Democrats ('police action' to make SE Asia safe for democracy)

Viet Nam: Republicans (although, escalated by JFK, actually initiated by DDE; non-war to continue trying to make SE Asia a place where the (surviving) native peoples could participate in American-style democracy)

Gulf War I/II: Republicans (beginning of the end of The 2,000 Years' War between Muslims and Judeo-Christian factions, a.k.a., The Last Jihadic Crusade; the war to make the entire Earth peaceful. As peaceful as a graveyard, in fact)

30. California Coalition of Fake-boobed Bimbo "actresses" sued for unfair exclusion. They claimed all scifi shows are required to include a character with fake-Os.

Hey Asarian

I think you may be on to something in your serious reasoning as to why the show was cancelled.

Don't know how seriously to take this, but X-files/Lone Gunmen actor Dean Haglund who played the character 'Langley' said in the development of the Lone Gunmen spinoff Fox Execs said they didn't want another show like the X-files.

They didn't want a show that critized government or its security agencies (CIA, FBI etc).
The alliance and the war certainly parallel the real world. But Joss wanted to create a world people could relate to.

The 2005 interview with the actor was on Alex Jones' Prisonplanet.com. For some reason my computer won't play this interview anymore for free. http://www.prisonplanet.tv/articles/january2005/120105haglund.htm

Hey luna195,

That statement about Fx programming policy makes more sense than many other arguments I heard about Firefly's demise and difficulty being resurrected. It makes more sense in light of how popular the series is with fans, how much money it's made, and how absurd most of the TV programming is nowadays. And a quick look at other Fx programming will agree with you too. Thanks for sharing the info.
