last i talked with Adam, he said he wouldn't be a guest again because of the horseshit he went through last year, but i'm almost certain he said he'll be there as One Of Us... unless he's off galavanting across the globe with Allison...

She's very gallavantible! And, yes, he is one of us, if not more so. It'll be a shame if I don't make it. I know ThatWeirdGirl wants to go, and I don't want to let her down. But, too much shouting, pushing, drinking (oh...that was me...actually, put that in the plus section), and general douchebaggery have made me not want to go again. You never can tell, though, HK, where I'll turn up. I do jump from here to there a lot.

I only have one Con on my plate this year, and its here in NC. HeroesCon in Charlotte in June. Who knows...I might be able to swing it again, and might even have the inclination when the time comes.

I'm reggied. A couple of other NEBCs are going but I still haven't heard about their lodging arrangements. Thought I'd try my luck here, so....

Is anybody here in need of a roomie?

Or at least have a couch in their room I might be able to crash out on?

Actually, the best deal for places to stay are the nicer motels (i.e.-Holiday Inn, Best Western, etc.) in Atlanta's suburbs. They're something like $65/night and 20 minutes away from downtown Atlanta. (Though, don't take my word for it. I heard this from someone else--my dad.)

Trust me, Phyre, at this con you do NOT want to be that far away from where all the action is. Not much sleep happens and everyone is up late. Twenty minutes away? Hell no, I don't want to be FIVE minutes away.

*****

I can give all the lead time on a request I want, but if they can't spare the manpower I'm fooked.

We've got one nurse whose BF/BD is getting out of jail in a couple of weeks, and she's announcing loudly that she's going to try for a third child. There's maternity leave right there. She's also not going to be happy at all when our manager does away with the 10 hour day shifts (only work 4 days). This nurse is a large portion of why the rest of us are working so hard to pick up the slack. I'm hoping she leaves in a huff when she can't arrange her second job as easily as she wants (not that she doesn't take time during the day to arrange her other schedule and disapears for an hour or more regularly to "take care of my business"). They started offering 10 hour days so that people (her, mostly) could have a whole day during the week to take care of business. Funny, that.

What about our brand new shiny nurse that we just hired through an agency to replace the one that left in JULY, you ask?
HAH! She has divulged information to me, on her second day, that she made me promise not to tell about. I suggested perhaps she discuss it with at least one other person after hearing it, sooner rather than later. She's going to talk to our manager Monday about it.
I'm not holding my breath on this one.

It takes a while to train a nurse in their new job, especially if they've never worked in that field before, and until they get up to speed it's like walking with a shoe that's the wrong size and has a different heel style (sneaker with a stiletto for a mate). After 10 to 12 weeks an agency nurse has a review to see if she's fitting in and if both parties want to make it permanent. This is just about the time they're starting to really get up to speed from what I've seen so far.
If the answer is "no" you have to start interviewing and hiring all over again, and it's another 12 weeks before you've got someone permanent.

So no, unfortunately, six months is not always enough time to request vacation. In fact, we just had to put in for time through June in late January. Furthermore, the manager can deny the request or even cancel the approval if we're desperate for manpower at the time.

(Don't you hate it when people do that, especially when you know it's going to be something that other people probably really ought to know *before they even tell you what it is*? That dread phrase "I need to tell you something, but you can't tell ANYONE!") You never know if it's going to be "I can't stand the smell of the lotion that nurse uses, and I may have to kill her" or "Aliens are sending messages to my brain telling me to steal all the paperclips".

Let's just say that at this rate there may only be three nurses working in the clinic on any given day by August.

The question is more one of what don't you do during the day/night...

Lots of people don't dress up. There is a significant number of amusing and entertaining Tshirts.
There are lots of presentations, parties, discussion groups, classes, parties, interviews, vendors, concerts, parties, costume contests, and random silliness. Did I mention parties?
Three (or more) hotels which are in a straight line are invaded and overrun for the weekend. People pretty much do just about anything and everything you can think of during the day, then once the sun goes down the more sedate stuff falls by the wayside and they do everything even more outrageously. Sometimes sleep is involved, but not if you're in the Hyatt. (From personal experience). There's also a lot of waiting around for and in elevators.
I spent the whole time hanging out with my new friends and gawking. Oh, and walking a lot.
I only made it to one panel (Ron Glass), and didn't feel like I'd missed a thing. Somebody pointed out that I'd just spent $!?!? to attend and didn't go to anything, but I really was having too much fun to notice.
There are lots of things with conflicting time slots, and you cannot possibly be in three places in three different buildings all at the same exact time, so you might as well get over that before you even step foot in the registration line (which is an event unto itself).
If you don't like crowds and personal space is of great importance to you this may not be your gig. Picture a human anthill and you'll get the idea. They need traffic monitors for the hotels to make sure people don't end up standing in one place for an hour without meaning to (elevators notwithstanding).
But where else do you have a chance to see things like the real (yes, really) Chewbacca in a face-off with a cardboard box wookie?

I'm staying at the Best Western about 2 blocks away from the Marriott/Hilton/Sheraton. I figure I can get some sleep that far away if I need it, walk back and forth and avoid the dreaded elevators at the Marriott. LOL

I'm paying $125/night AAA rate/double with full breakfast, so one meal is taken care of. It's also near the Marta station as my daughter and I are hopefully flying from Raleigh.

Huh, that's not a bad deal.

I wish I could go ahead and reserve a room now. However, I was hoping that my brother can come too (who is into D&D, Firefly, etc.), but he also has something scheduled with the National Guard at that time, and they keep moving it around from any where between mid-July to mid-November. I really want to go, but I don't feel safe traveling to a city by myself to meet a bunch of people that I don't know in RL. It's tricky right now.

http://www.seanharry.com/serenity7/index.htm

Now I can't decide.
A) less scary to not travel alone and cheaper, plus more guests!
B) don't get to meet all my US friends form this board!

What I'd really like is to go to both but don't think I could afford that. What would you do? Honestly?

Last year I was a bit scared of flying off by myself to the US to meet people I've only spoken to on the boards. My RL friends thought I was insane, and warned me against axe murderers.

But meeting Browncoats for real was like meeting family I didn't know I had.

It was well worth it.

I didn't cross international borders, but I did stay in a room with what amounted to three (and then four) perfect strangers. I'm a grown woman and perfectly capable of traveling on my own, have been for years, and really enjoy not needing to conform to someone else's schedule and itinerary.
The scaries are usually allayed by asking directions from someone who looks to be an employee, and I'm sure that there are people living in and around Atlanta who would be willing to meet you at the airport or hotel. I ran into a lot of Con goers on my way in who I hadn't planned on meeting up with anyway.

Instant family, just add Con ticket!
I also heartily recommend international travel if you can swing it. We've got a big continent to roam around in, but England, Ireland, France, Netherlands, and Belgium were well worth the effort.

Canada's pretty OK too.

Well don't know what the flight would cost you, but if you find 3 roomies ( which is what most do) the room's about $220 for all four nights and the D*C registration is like $60( not sure check their site) and then just food... so maybe $600-$800

Who me? Are you kidding? A flight from Australia alone costs a good two grand, and that's if you book it early. One of my dearest friends came from there for the last con. It cost me about $300 for my plane ticket from here in the Rockies.

D*C '07 cost me about 1000 pounds sterling last year when I add up my flight(from scotland)/hotel/spending. That was in an overflow hotel which is a bit cheaper, but I only had the one roommate which countered the cheapness.

I went two days without even stepping foot in my hotel last year, even though it was only a block or two away. I was having too much fun to head back there at night. I would suggest that if you're going to go you try as hard as possible to get into one of the host hotels, cause you really dont want to miss anything when you're there. It's definetly still a worthwhile trip if you cant get into one of them, but it makes life easier.

Also, Rose is not an ax murderer, she prefers big swords and whips. No less frightening.

Damn, they know we're axe murderers MsB, we'll have to change our MO.

Adam Baldwin and Jewel Staite are listed as guests at the moment, and I read somewhere that Morena was also slated to be there, though it isn't on the main D*C site just yet.

This year I think I will try to go without sleep for the whole weekend. Naah, probably not.

It's definitely worth the time and money, as it's loads of fun, and I've made it one of my two unofficial holidays of the year.

It is a giant Con though, with the official numbers from last year being 33,000 (there were at least 50,000 there, IMHO). That can be daunting, but I find it a lot of fun. If you do come it'll probably be a good idea to find a "Con-Buddy", at least for the first day or so.

If that does not happen, I currently have 3 rooms booked in my name and will probably only need two of them. I'm not releasing the third one yet, just in case. They are in the Marriott, as that's where the dealer room is, so I wanted proximity thereof. Although from what I'm reading, I'd best start practicing running up and down stairs instead of waiting forever for elevators!

The Marriott elevators aren't that bad, even at peak times. The Hyatt's are the worst, IMHO, and that's mostly because they all go to all floors. I really hope I am in one of the towers, or that I have a room in the first 2-3 floors at the Hyatt.

Oh not the elevators... I still have nightmares of the elevators... giggle

Also have your cell phone so that when you get lost for the 40th time you can describe your location and one of your more directionally able friends can come find you ( of course that might be just something I have to do as I get lost terribly easily... ask Jimi, Rose, and Magda as they were the ones who had to come find me all the time)

if you end up only needing two rooms,
i could use the unneeded room you have...

SISTER

oh, and cameras, cameras, cameras!! One of the few joys of being a smoker is that I'd have to go outside the Marriott where I stayed last year and watch the costumes parade back and forth across the street! The Marriott is the middle hotel of the 'three in a row' that Dragon*Con encompasses so everybody has to go through that hotel to get to the others. Fabulous for people watching. I would not be worried at all about traveling there alone. While you will find the occasional ass; most of the people are really very pleasant, helpful and there to have fun and not cause problems. (Although I'm sure there are those who would disagree). It's actually quite safe, even for the single folk. I had one woman in line for the passes tell me that, "if anyone is seen giving somebody a hard time they will be rescued instantly as many of the fans get very much 'in character' as soon as they arrive." I drive down by myself (and last year requested a refrigerator in the room so my roomie and I could bring simple snacks/fruit/breakfast stuff and our own booze from home - saved SOME $$ that way!). ALSO - eating out at restaurants while there - wow, HUGE portions; so we always asked for 'to go' boxes and stuffed them in the fridge for another meal! Hopefully THIS year I will figure out a better place to park, tho. Leaving, I sat in my car for about an hour to get OUT of the damn garage - THEN realized had I "lost or misplaced" my ticket it would have been about $30 LESS! Grrrrrr. Ya live, ya learn.
