The Fox site for the TV show had some great stuff, documenteries about hte making of the train job, the blue sun commercial, and all that shiny stuff.

But it aint on the DVD!

I watched the Blue sun add on My PC, its a habit, but every thing on the site takes soooo long to load. Is there any one who has tried to put that stuff on a disk? Is there any way I can finegle a copy from you?

I can't rightly remember who knew the rules for Tall Card, but I bet if you ask on the taglog, you'll find someone answers pretty quick.

As for other video's, I got tons of 'em. Interviews from 7 of the cast(no Morena or Gina), Joss interview, Joss directing a scene, and a Tim Minnear interview. Plus a few others. These are in quicktime, and were available somewhere once, but I forget where.

Oh boy howdy, I'd also be eternally grateful if there were some way of downloading and copying to cd all the great stuff on the original Firefly site. Before it disappears forever! I may be wrong about this, but if you have Quicktime Pro ($30), can't you download to disk Quicktime clips that lesser mortals can only view on the web? Is there anyone out there with Pro who could give this a try? If that works, I'd seriously consider upgrading.

Oh, and I know this is probably the most asinine question everhttp:// -- please forgive me as I'm a very new browncoat (but a totally obsessive one!): why is the Blue Sun clip on the original Firefly site described as containing a "very familiar face" or something like that?? Who's the girl drinking the canned whatever in the clip? Many thanks for any info on that.

Well, there's just a whole bunch of you (new) guys.

You must have QuickTime Pro to save to disc. It's well worth it because otherwise, you can't save movie trailers and that most desirable of all, FF cast interviews, Blue Sun ads, and whole bunch of other things formerly located at the Fox FF site and now archived by the owner of this very site, fireflyfans.net. The url is:

http://www.fireflyfans.net/firefly/index.htm

And I've no idea who that Blue Sun "face" is in the ad.

Addition: I note that just ahead of me is a URL for a Fox site with FF material. I didn't know it still worked.

Actually, it depends on how the file is accessed. You can download almost all the videos from the FFF mirror directly, by looking at the file source of the popup window. You'll see that all the videos are accessed via HTTP, so you can save the files directly through that URL. (You might want to use a download program like wget, since otherwise the browser will likely try to play the video directly without asking you if you want to save the file first. I dunno about the Windows programs like GetRight.) The only videos you can't save are those that were accessed through streaming protocols, basically all the ones that have three format (QT, WMV, and RM) options. Not only were those streamed, the streams are gone already anyway.

Actually, I might as well just list all the videos I found on FFF mirror, in the video directory (i.e. http://www.fireflyfans.net/firefly/video/). Note that you can't access the directory listing directly since it's protected. If I shouldn't be doing this, Haken, please edit the following.
Edit: Actually, the link somebody posted above of the fox hosted site seems to be the old site back again! So to save some FFF bandwidth, download from the Fox site, appending the following filenames to http://www.fox-tv.com/firefly/video/

Thanks for listing all that info....but alas, from this end, no joy. In a burst of giddy enthusiasm at the idea of saving these great downloads for posterity (i.e., onto disk), I paid for Quicktime Pro. Yup, paid $29, then blast! Didn't work. Couldn't save any of them to disk. Ditto no luck with your most recent FF mirror info. I appreciate your effort, though, even though it didn't work for me.

Darn, darn, darn. It's too bad this great stuff isn't available for the fantatic fervent fans....although maybe it's a matter of authorship/copyright?

Saint Jayne, I'd be intrigued to know more about ripping from the web. I don't know if it makes a diff that I'm a Mac user, which may be scandalous to people here. But hey, I have OS X, which is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

Mac is good. Internet Explorer? Go into preferences, receiving files, file helpers and look for the extension of "MOV" (probably under "Quicktime"). Change this. You can specify to download the file instead of displaying it. Once you're done collecting all your MOV files, you can turn this back.

KernelM had a good, easy idea: Write your own HTML link, right click and save.

For example: namehttp://www.domain.com/file.mov">name;

I just use a text-only browser. They can't display graphics or movies (or anything else) but they do let you save them to disk. Lynx is good - there's a beta version for Mac. There's also MacLynx and WannaBe. I've never used them, but I've read great reviews about the later. Search for "text only web browser mac" on Google for a variety.

For those last two ideas you'll need to find the URL. It's normally as easy as clicking View, Source.

More bonus material:

I was just about to ask if anyone had seen clips of FOX's ads floating around when I stumbled onto a page with almost every last variation of every promo (and a sweet layout to boot). Browncoats rock.

http://www.have-dog.com/firefly/

Highlights include FOX billing Inara as a "cosmic hooker," the tagline "prepare for warp speed" (?!?) and footage of Reaver ships used to stand in for the Alliance chasing Serenity. Most of the ads also bowdlerize out as much of the Western flavour as possible in favour of action, briefly glimpsed nudity and Smash Mouth announcing their plans to buy the world a toke.

(I much prefer the previews Canada's Global ran last year. They'd start out with only Western scenes of gunfights and cow herds with a narration about life in frontier times, followed by Serenity buzzing the camera for a perfect WTF moment. Only then do they proceed to blow your mind with the special effects)

As for the missing War Stories trailer, there's one here, although I could only get audio out of it and couldn't save it to disk at all:

You can also do the same thing with Netscape--go into Edit/Preferences, then in Navigator go to Helper Applications, then either find the MOV application (Quicktime) and change it to "Save to disk" or create the application: MIME type--Quicktime; extension--MOV and select "Save to disk"

Wish I'd known this before I also forked out $29 for QT Pro. . . .

Thanks a million, Bleeker.

Leeh, forgive my insane computer incompetence, but I'm trying to do what you suggested for changing Netscape to be able to download Quicktime files to disk. (I also paid $29 for Quicktime Pro, darnit).

My problem is that when I go into Helper Applications, I can type in extension (mov) and MIME type (Quicktime) but there's no choice that I can see to be able to "select to save to disk." However, I'm supposed to type in something for "handled by."

Would you mind helping me out here? I'm such a computer dummy, but I'm trying. The thing is, if you're trying to learn but don't have quite the knowledge yet, then if you try to do google searches for advice you end up with stuff that is just a tad too technical.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Well, it may depend on what version of Netscape you have. I'm working with 7.1, the latest. So for that version, here's what to do:

Select the Edit menu, then select Preferences, then Navigator, then Helper Applications, then select "New Type" if Quicktime isn't already listed there, or highlight Quicktime if it is. If it is, once you highlight it, select "Edit" and the choices should pop up for whether to open or save to disk. If Quicktime isn't there, and you choose "New Type" then you should have the option of naming the MIME type as Quicktime and the file extension as MOV, as well as whether to open or save to disk.

IF these directions don't help, then I wonder if you have an older version. The way to find out what version you have is to select the Help menu, then "About" and it will tell what version you have. You can upgrade for free if you go the Netscape web site--I just did about 2 weeks ago.

Good luck. I'm not much of a computer geek (just a wannabe) so if I can do it, you can!

One more bonus I couldn't find linked above or mirrored on FFF.net: the website promo for Out of Gas...

I assume this is what they're referring to at the end of the War Stories commentary, although Nathan doesn't look all that beaten up.

The original page was http://www.fox-tv.com/firefly/message, but Fox replaced the distress signal with a clip from Ariel after OoG aired.
