In the episode "Out of gas" Mal tells Inara "I'm not leaving Serenity".

I wonder if this is a hidden reference to the war and Serenity Valley.

Even though th wars all done and we're all just folk, Mal is still a BC through and through. How much is he still holding on to the war? Has he left Serenity Valley?

Believe there was a line saying that you never leave serenity valley. Either way, he was fighting for what he believed, and he still believes it. Now, he has more proof, and although it's not an organized mass military offensive, he's still fighting the war.

Anybody who disagrees with any of this violently can do so. But no matter what you do, "You can't take the sky from me".

I think Mal, in a way, sees Serenity as one of his friends. That's why it's not "The" Serenity.

I think your reading too much into this. I know we only have 14 episodes to discuss, and they've all been over analyzed, but I only see it as him not leaving his ship. (you know the old paraphrase a captain never leaves his ship)

To him Serenity (the ship) was his last and only chance of freedom outside the Alliance rule. The only thing he had that was his, that the Alliance never took from him. Yes he named it after Serenity Valley (the quote from Zoe is spot on) but I don't see any underlying reference to SV.

If anything as someone else said Serenity was/is a friend. Just looking at his reaction in Out of Gas when he sees Serenity for the first time, it was love at first site. No one who looks at his ship that way (regardless if it's a piece of fee-yoo as Zoe callled her) is going o just abandon her. He may love Inarah, but Serenity got to him first. (I could make references to The Enterprise and Kirk considering one episode that brings similarities but I won't.)

Mal won't leave his ship because she's part of his life. He's already lost a huge chunk of his life at The Valley.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Also, your sig is creepy.

On topic, I don't think it was a complex metaphor. Gifted as Joss is with symbols and metaphors, I think it was just a simple statement in this case. "I'm staying with Serenity." meant simply... that he was staying with his ship. His boat. His home. His love. Mal is stubborn and wouldn't leave. Does that tie back to the Valley? Well, I suppose it could, but it's not something he learned there. He brought that stubborn streak with him, and it might have been one of the only things he kept.

I am selfish, impatient, and a little insecure. I make mistakes. I am out of control. And sometimes I'm a little hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.

I agree. He lost (the battle of) Serenity once, and he's not going to lose "Serenity", now.

And yeah, the sig is WAY creepy. Kill it!

The effect that the war had on Mal is a point underlying in everything. With the exception of Zoey, none of his crew know the true depths of the scars inside. This was seen again in the BDM brought out by Jayne.

Serenity is everything Mal has left. He can't leave the only hope he has in life and living. Better to die free with his dream than leave or give up.

"We're still flying."
"That's not much."
"It's enough."
