I got the alumni magazine from my university today. Inside was a column "Books by Faculty".

Right at the head of the list was this one:

The Existential Joss Whedon: Evil and Human Freedom in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firely, and Serenity. by J. Michael Richardson and J. Douglas Rabb.

I could see giving this to my best friend who is a huge Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan. I will admit that Vampires never caught my imagination so I didn't follow either series of Buffy or Angel. It was an off hand chance of seeing the complete set of Firefly at a book store for a good price that I even know of Joss Wheden. I remembered seeing adds for Firefly on the television but was never around a tv when the episodes were on, so I bought the set and was hooked. I now own the movie and have a copy of the paper back coming via mail.

I just got "The Psychology of Joss Whedon." by edited Joy Davidson, PHD.

It's a very interesting perspective on the whole Jossverse.

The most interesting article for Browncoats analyzes Mal and Jayne and is titled, " The Adaptive, the Maladaptive, and the Mal-Adaptive."

Then there's "Terror Management Aboard Serenity" "Mal's Morals" and "'Stripping' River Tam's Amygdala".

My friend Diane has read The Existential Joss Whedon: Evil and Human Freedom in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firely, and Serenity by J. Michael Richardson and J. Douglas Rabb and loved it!

I want to read the one you've read too, NCB.

*must tell Diane about it*

So many books to read and so little time!

The reason I bought it is that Joy Davidson wrote an excellent essay in "Finding Serenity" about Inara. It was especially interesting because Ms. Davidson is not only a psychologist, a Marriage and Family therapist but is also a certified sex therapist.

In this book her essay is about Angel's obsession with Darla. I haven't seen Angel but now I think I want to.

Too bad they couldn't get J. Michael Straczynski to contribute!
