Am I the ONLY one who missed something, or did they never have time to actually SAY what the Blue Sun Corporation is all about? I know that they're supposed to be some big conglomarate (if that's how you spell it :P) but what were they? I always assumed that the blue handed guys worked for Blue Sun, or at least Blue Sun was behind River's experiments at the academy (that's why she cut Jayne's Blue Sun shirt, right?), but is there more to it?

Does anyone have any straight answers, or is it all just supposed to be some big, enigmatic...thing...?

Any help on the subject would be appreciated.

It was supposed to be a mega corporation - sorta like a merger of Microsoft and Coca Cola.

It is everywhere in everything. So much so that the average person no longer finds that special in any way.

None of this is said, but it is in the background, with it in crates, food labels, Jaynes shirt, cortex screens etc etc.

It probably does a little of everything. Some divisions may be involved in the psyhic programme. as may the HoB. This is all hinted at, not said as far as I know.

I think this was left vague on purpose, but I think it is a conglomerate corporation which is also the Government. I do know that the center of the ‘verse is a Blue Giant Sun which probably is the inspiration for the corporation’s name, but what I would like to know is how would having a blue sun change life for mankind in reality? Wouldn’t plants as we know them have a difficult time growing there? How about the animals which depend on the plant life?

I think Blue Sun is a buried plotline that would have come out later, like 3rd or 4th season. And I think it's another secret buried in River's head (recall her issue with the canned food and the Blue Sun labels) Which is why I don't believe her to be all sane and recovered at the end of the BDM - more than one ugly secret is buried in her little cranium...

Astronomically speaking, when they refer to a sun being blue or red it isn't completely red or blue, just that the color of the light is farther to the red or blue ends of the spectrum than the color of our current sun. The actual difference probably wouldn't be all that obvious to the naked eye.

I could stand to hear a little more.

I've always been very twitchy about the processed food element of Blue Sun. Just a Huxley-type vibe there - maybe the Core are so compliant because they have more processed foodstuffs? After all, if the government will mess with your air, what the hell would they do to your toothpaste? (check out River's rant in 'Shindig'.)

All the Cortex screens in public places are also security recorders. I liked those things in 'Minority Report' that used retinal recognition to pitch their ads. That tech is around. I like to think that those sunglasses of Simon's in the first ep weren't just a fashion statement.

The real Blue Sun is an advertising company in China. Since the first ad company on Broadway was founded by Sigmund Freud's nephew, using his uncle's techniques to sell things... retail/therapy has a whole new meaning, huh?

So, these folks have access to your shopping preferences; they know what you eat, drink, read, watch and listen to. And as a big corporation, they probably fund political candidates. The type who give preferential tax breaks. Private R&D would probably be better funded and a little less accountable than public/military.

After all, what if River wasn't a military app? Industrial espionage - what we might term the cut and thrust of the business world - could find a use for that sort of skill. As could certain other Guilds...

I seem to recall hearing Joss answer a question rather similar to this one. I belive he said that Blue Sun was an amalgamation of the largest surviving companies that had made if off earth-that-was. They had so much combined power and influence that they 'own' (unsure of the words literal or figurative use in this context) half the government. This would certainly explain how the Hands of Blue were able to kill with such impunity.
As to the Hands of Blue working directly for the Alliance government, i don't think so. In the comics they are refered as 'independant contractors' so they were hired to kill River. Who they were hired by i'm not sure. If the Alliance high-ups knew about River from the start why not just send the Operative after her from the begining? It could be that the Academy is an Alliance project who wanted to keep Rivers escape quiet and so hired the H.O.B's. This would indicated that there is still a degree of seperation between Blue Sun and the Alliance since they weren't told straight away about River's escape.
Hows that for customer confidentiality.

I may wear brown, but theres a little purple mixed in there too.

There are three basic types of suns, the red, the yellow and the blue. Red suns come in two varieties the red giants and red dwarfs. What makes a sun red is that it burns off its fuel at a very slow rate making the sun a colder and very long lasting sun. The yellow suns are basically middle sized suns which burd their fuel at a medium pace causing the sun to put out a medium level of heat, and they last a medium length of time. The Blue moons I think come in two sizes huge, and a lot bigger than that. They burn their fuel at the fastest rate and thus produce the hottest temperatures and thus they also live a very short life span. When I talk about temperatures and life spans I am of course talking cosmically.

One web site I went to said that if we were to replace a blue giant, and I am not talking about the extremely big ones its size would extend to where neptune is in orbit right now, so basically our sun would be like a marble compared to our moon. That sort of blows my mind, but I can sort of imagine how a blue star would have a larger tera-belt.

There are other types of stars out there, but they are basically made from these three types of stars.
