OK, I've never posted on a forum before, so please bear with me.

I'm a nerdy grad student getting an MA in archival administration, and I'm trying to write a 20 pager on the benefits of archiving fan based media, using Firefly as a model. I guess my main question right now is if anyone knows whether official Firefly or Serenity materials (scripts, costumes, notes, etc. along with the actual series/ movie) are actually archived somewhere (the episode "Serenity" is at the Museum of Broadcast Communication"). Does anyone know where a good place to start looking might be?

I guess there might be a place that keeps ALL that stuff but I can't even remember where I downloaded the shooting script for Out of Gas.

But if you want it, http://ks4rs.net/Firefly_1AGE07_-_OutOfGas.pdf

I don't know of any official archive of FF/S materials. In fact, I know that many items (props from the movie) have been sold to individual fans, and other materials (original scripts and prop items from the series) have been auctioned for charity. (I myself own an original script.)

Perhaps you are aware that the ambulance from the Ariel episode was found in a scrapyard and recovered/restored by a group of fans; it's about to make an appearance at a convention. I'm sure many other items of interest are still in the hands of Joss and the actors.

It would be nice to have a real, official archive, though. If such a thing were to be created, I would consider adding my script to the collection.

No such archive exists. The closest thing you'll find is here:

http://versaphile.com/download/firefly.html

But, I imagine that if someone wanted to do it, Fox's lawyers would have a field day suing. They aren't exactly ethical forward thinkers there.

EDIT: There's lots of links archived on this site. Searching it can be done here:

The search box is in the right column.

- i could be wrong! i really could, sorry -

but in general (i believe that) recorded material is initially archived by the broadcasting company itself and for quite some time - there are probably legal and union reasons here - before they are passed onto any third party.

An example of material - especially if considered significant may be put somewhere - e.g. the episode serenity and (i think because the main museum / library system still aims to have an example record of all that's broadcast).

the orginal and shooting scripts will be in the hands that grabbed 'em - inc some residing still with the tv company.

you can buy em tho!:)

on a national level things can atleast be archived electronically/digitally now - and things are more coherant than say the 1970s where things like mastertapes got lost or damaged quite often.

but if you are talking 'fan based media' then don't you mean the emphemera produced by fans???

a hell of a lot of material relating to star trek and star wars has disappeared or become hard to track (everything from zines to the original fan convention LPs) - alas - much now of genuine interest for documenting a given period, an audience, and its contemporary concerns...

aww hell - maybe i'm talking nonsense...
