Firefly is a rip-off of the Battlestar Galactica episode 'Lost Warrior'!

Apollo crash lands on a planet that has an oddly western feel to it, and has to have a shoot out with a malfunctioning Cylon. Besides that, there is the ficticious slang (Frak!), and the accepted whore (socialator), and the displaced-from-their-home-planet race - holy crap! Joss got every idea for FF right from Glen Larson!!!!

I just watched that episode today, and I disagree. Everything about BSG and FF are different. BSG is a group of people on the run from enemies who want to destroy them, searching for a lost branch of their people. The use FTL, laser guns, improbable technology and contrived divisions. FF has extrapolated tech, people who are home, normal divisions(rich and poor still exist) and even the language can be traced to proper roots. Don't get me wrong, I love BSG, both then and now, but there is really no comparison between that and FF. Very different ideas.

Funny, I just watched it last night
I'm mostly just tryin' to get a discussion going, I'm not REALLY sayin' Joss ripped anyone off.
But the 'socialator'/'companion' thing is a pretty funny coincidence, don't ya think?

Thats funny, I always thought it was a rip-off of that movie Serenity. I just gave Joss credit for ripping himself off before he actually did something. Genius, that one.

I thought this the last time I went through the original series. Whilst the shows aren't alike that episode definitely has some comparisons.
The socialator was obvious along with the scifi/western mix. Even the bad guy in BSG could be referenced in Rance Burgess from FF with running the town and the advanced tech each had.

Whether Joss had ever seen it - well who knows?? I think it would be kind of nice if it inspired him in someway, even subconciously.

So, if we got a soliciator and a companion in the same room, would there be a fight, or trading pointers?

isn't this kinda like suggesting that FF ripped off Star Trek, and Wagon Train, and a bunch of John Wayne movies? And probably Gunsmoke, too? Wasn't Miss Kitty more than just a saloon owner, especially when she was younger?

Isn't all of that part of the genre? And , of course, the most important difference between BSG and Firefly, no aliens?

"There is nothing new under the sun, except that which has been forgotten."

Reputedly spoken by Marie Antoinette's dressmaker. Source is disputed. Me, I'm too lazy to Google it.

Implications? So many gorram ideas out there, bound to see some of 'em pop up again, in different places, from time to time,

Still, Joss likely did see BSG:TOS, as well as many of the other shows mentioned. Conscious derivation? Almost certainly not. General influence? Hey, they various elements we enjoy in their combination in Firefly had to come from somewhere...

I vaguely remember there are only 3 main themes in literature, and everything can fall into one of those themes. Man vs man, man vs nature, man vs himself. So, since television is just visual literature(no comments on quality from me), and since it has to fit in to those three catagories, of course it makes *sense that ideas crop up again and again. Of course, how yo present those ideas is where true creativity comes in.

Gosh, did I go on and on!
*Edit: Ooops, I caught a boo-boo.

I think Joss ripped off whoever wrote Alien: Resurrection. Ya know, the rag-tag space pirates taking on odd transport jobs.

I wanna see how that lawsuit pans out!

Mebbe Joss could use the proceeds of the settlement to make Serenity 2: The Irony.

Yes! I see the light Chris, it is so obvious, he even copied the ships. The Firefly design is a blatant, though obviously smaller, version of a Battlestar.
