I'm new here, about a week or 2.

I know many of you have been here for 5 years, and the BDM has been out for 2 years. However, I thought some of you might be curious about some of the distorted chronological discovery of the verse some of us have had.
So here is one example.

I don't watch tv much, not much to watch in a while. When Dark Angel came on, I had to set up my TV and VCR to an antenna to watch. I do watch several movies per week in the cinema.

Saw previews/trailers for Serenity, wanted to see it. Marquee names were Summer and Adam, implying that Summer was the star, and Adam was the most recognizable name of the cast. It seemed like part of the genre of "surprise hero" ala Bourne Identity, the female version Last Kiss Goodnight, Neo (Matrix), or many comic book heroes like Peter Parker or The Punisher, etc.

Enjoyed the movie, as expected. Particularly liked when the credits rolled Jewel's name.

At some point, noticed on imdb that Jewel also had some credit with the same character name on a show called Firefly. Put it on my list of shows to watch for.
In August, was cat-sitting for my aunt for a week, they have 60 inch flatscreen and HD service, noticed a mini-maratho of Firefly, and switched over to cathc it.
My introduction to the episodes was the end of Ariel, starting with the blue hands making heads bleed - a weird intro to this small verse. Saw the remaining episodes in the DVD sequence, wanted to see more.
Put it on my list of DVDs to look for at the next stop to bestbuy. Got it early Sept, saw the remaining episodes in sequence.

So keep in mind that BDM-first fans have a little different perspective - all these Mal, Zoe, KayLee characters are like supporting cast while River is the star of the film, and Inara and Book are verse contacts similar to the twins (Fanty, Mingo), Mr Universe, etc and hardly central characters.

So true. After all, as we know, I write the one and only true vision!

The UK posters for the BDM certainly pushed Summer as a kind of Buffy/Dark Angel character, which is very confusing when you see the series. (Saw movie trailer, but bought and watched box set before seeing said movie, just to keep continuity...)

no, no - seriously ...
my biggest failure to convert came with a friend
who didn't think River kicked enough ass in the BDM - weird huh? they still claim to have been deceived by the trailers!

I'm the same, BDM-First Fan, so when I watched Firefly I was surprised about Summer being put last on the opening credit's(actually its done the same order at the beginning of the movie but is done differently on the Posters) and always thought of her as one of the main characters though now they are all main characters in my heart, epecially Summer Huba, Huba.

Yes, I did forget to mention Dark Angel as another example of the character genre.

Also, I did not mean to implty our view was correct, as is it obviously wrong in sequence. Just wanted to point out the root of some of our confusion.

hello hello from the Philippines.

am a newbie as well, and one of those who felt cheated that I've only started appreciating this 'Verse now that it's been years since it's been off the air. (where was I in 2003??? or 2005 for that matter???)

Anyway, I first saw a bit of Train Job and was curious when I saw Gina Torres in it.(I've always associated her with Standoff, which was shown waaaay after Firefly, but then, I'm halfway round the world from the US, so I guess I am what you would consider as 'out in the black'... hehe ) Then I turn to HBO and Serenity was playing. I think the 'Verse was conspiring to get me hooked on it.

I think I digressed so far that I'm losing my point. heh. What I meant to say was that I too was given the view of the 'Verse via BDM but I didn't really get the feeling that it was a River story. Rather, it was more of an ensemble thing, which was why I was shocked when Mr. Whedon killed off some characters. Who kills off characters in an ensemble??? (well, I guess Heroes comes to mind...) Still, it was all genius and I don't think I can stop being addicted to Firefly anytime soon...

Yes, cheated is how I felt, too. Not the first time I've felt cheated. For those of you fans of western music, I didn't find out about Chris LeDoux until the rerelease of This Cowboy's Hat, on his 32nd album.

I know that many here harp on the Fox network for the cancellation. However, in all honestly, I must give them fair credit for providing creative terrain for this verse to be produced. I did not see NBC, CBS, ABC broadcasting Firefly. Without Fox we would have no verse or lack thereof to comp[lain about or discuss.

Likewise, I am also required to give fair credit to those here who predated BDM. There is no possible way for me to retroactively perform any task or function to help in the drive towards filming of the BDM, and for these acts you've accomplished we will forever be in your debt. For without your efforts we likely never would have had the pleasure of discovering the verse we so love.
My sincere appreciation for all you accomplished. Thanks.

And I've been here for 12 days now. Actually only 7 days of those 12 calendar days.

I'm from the UK, and I saw the film first. I liked it, but didn't go "head over heels" until after I started watching the show about 6 months later. Can't say I remember picking up that River was supposed to be the central character, but my memory is a little fuzzy ;)

Basically the same for me, I lived in UK saw it on holiday in US before other Brits saw it back home then thought it was pretty good but nothing special, then when it came out on DVD I bought it on UMD then after watching 5 times I thought it was brilliant then when out and got the DVD of Serenity then watched that 6 times then about 3 months later got round to buying the Firefly Box Set.

I don't see any problem with a browncoat deciding that the series/movie is all about River, or Kaylee, or whoever.

As Joss pointed out in the commentary, every character is the hero of his or her own story. Jayne thinks he's righteous and that the show is all about him.

Since the series was written that way, there's no problem with any viewer picking up on any character as the "star". It's all about who you relate to and empathize with.

She bumped it for me.

I was a newbie who thought that the story was all about Simon and River until about half an hour into the movie...I'm still a bit disappointed about it. ;-)

All the characters are key in my book. I didn't like how the Movie was marketed...it didn't really grab people. I had to con people to come and see it with me as part of my birthday celebrations...thankfully my friends loved it and are all converts now.

Why disappointed? The BDM was, in fact, largely about River.

To briefly return to my perspective, the first episode I saw was part of Ariel. It was ok.
THEN, some dude named Mal whups a wrench upside the big dude's skull, and throws him out the cargo doors - holy cow, what did I miss?
By the conclusion of that scene I figured this was a show with some meat to it, and I needed to watch more. I was glued to the rest of the marathon.

But the movie, that was marketed as River's story.

Yes, the BDM had a lot of River plot...but not River character. There are a couple choice scenes, but no more than some of the episodes of Firefly. And I liked Simon just as much. Other than a couple episodes, there just isn't much about Simon and River in the series or movie. That was what disappointed me.
