Anyone know why Target has discontinued Firefly? They had the DVDs at the store but then after Christmas I went to get a copy (since I didn't get one as a present) and they told me they had been discontinued and would not be getting any more. This was the 26th I mean the DVD came out just 17 days earlier. Target does own Amazon though so i thought maybe they were selling them only through there.

If they sold out then they could just re-order. They said they were not going to be selling Firefly anymore.

Not if they can't get them anymore, which is a possibility.

Suncoast is also sold out. On their website you can backorder it though.

I just want to know why I haven't seen a single copy in stores yet. Not Wal-Mart, not Future Shop, not A&B Sound. How can the DVD attract new fans in Calgary if they don't even have them on shelves?

AMMENDMENT - I've talked to the sales reps, and it turns out they're just all sold out! Good news!

I have gotten the DVD for christmas and have already been using it to create new fans. I have enlisted my three older sisters and the boyfriends of two of them. One of them is going back to college with them and she promises to show them to as many people there as possible. I have also taken to lending all 14 episodes that SPACE aired, that I recorded, to friends and co-workers. So, the FFF network is continuing to grow in Calgary and the rest of Southern Alberta and Saskatchewan regardless of DVD supplies.

Amazon is a publicly traded company. Target does not own them. Target is owned by Dayton Hudson, though. As it says on Target's wesite:

A good sign if you couldn't find any, they had about 15 copies on the shelve when I bought mine.

Now, we need to encourage them to reorder...

Already sent two new fans looking for theirs.

Circuit City and Best Buy had them. But I don't think anyone understood me. According to the people at Target who looked it up in the book Target IS NOT SELLING THEM ANYMORE. They will not order more. They did have some, but those are gone (I assume sold) but they have discontinued it and will not be ordering others. Thats what the people at the store told me. I then checked Circuit City where i found a copy and a friend found them at Best Buy. The trouble with Amazon is the long wait. And even a day or two is too long a wait for Firefly.

I'm really glad you got your copy. I understand that you didn't mean for this to be a "where do I get my DVD" thread. It's a shame that Target will not carry the Firefly DVD anymore. I guess they don't see the potential in it that we do. I don't believe that Target owns Amazon but they are clearly business partners since Amazon runs the Target website.

Target does not own Amazon. Target has an agreement to work hand-in-hand online. Target Corporation owns Target Stores, Marshall Field's and Mervyn's (and a small handful of catalogs). They do not own Amazon.

If you wish to have Firefly back in the Target store, ask the Team Leader in the DVD area to order it for you.

Dayton Hudson Corporation changed their name to Target Corporation in January 2000. Soon after that, the decision to change the name of Dayton's stores to Marshall Field's was made.

*sigh* I miss Daytons.

I apologize for my ignorance regarding the Target Amazon thingy. Bad information. Just wanted to know if anyone knew the why. Thought maybe they didn't see the need for ordering more cause they didn't believe in the sales, or had a different vendor or whatever in which case I was hoping people could go to their local Target as I did and ask them about it and so they would then hopefully start to order them again. The more places they're offered the more people will see them and possibly buy them remebering how much they liked the show, which is good because we all know that will increase the chances for a movie and or new TV series. Amazon's great but people who order it from there most likely went to them specifically looking for Firefly, but at stores its like having posters up...good advertisement and potential for others to buy it who hadn't really thought about it since it was canceled.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I have not checked Target since the 22nd, but they still had 3 copies of the DVD set on the shelf then.

I will swing by Target tonight and see if they have them. If they don't, I will see if ordering is possible. I know someone who works there who can get the low down for us.

Target is certainly a strange retailer.

I am something of a Lego collector (accumulator?) and have friends who are action figure collectors. We have all seen occasional instances where Target will stock something for a short time (as little as 2 weeks) and put it on clearance with a 25 to 30 percent markdown. If the item stays on the shelf for a couple of more weeks, it could end up at a 75% markdown -- all for something on the shelf for a month.

I suspect this is a similar situation -- they ordered something, put it on sale, but do not plan to have it in permanent stock -- reguardless of how quickly it sold out. It must be some point in their business model. I do not pretend to understand how or why this works for them; I'm just making an observation.
