It's such a little bit of the scene, she takes the package and hides it, so it's not something she's keen on the other folks seeing.

So...more exciting pharmacological goodies, like the little vial'o'nasty?

I mean, this was obviously going to be something that popped up again at some point. Were we going to find a client with a drug habit? Or a client who needed to have a drug habit?

Okay guys, gimme a hand here. When do you see Inara taking post or any package in this episode? If your player has one of those timers on it, an exact time would be helpful. Thanks.

It's in the background when Jayne finds he has post, as Kaylee turns up. (According to script.)

Has anyone offered this? ...Maybe Inara has a drug dependancy problem, Maybe she was asked to leave house madrasa because she was discovered. Please dont get all defensive...we know how much Joss likes giving his characters REAL human problems... Its just a theory.

It is not on the DVD, but it may have been cut out as they had been cancelled by that point and maybe they did not want to leave things hanging in the balance? (like how OiS was moved to the end of the series to give closure)

Onto the white box... no idea. but later in the episode where she is sitting at the table with a tea set out when Serenity is playing a submarine, she is supposed to be pensive over that same small white box. It is something imoportant to her which she was putting off opening... a message of some sorts would be my guess. Secret/secure Companion communication system? (Amnon was also supposed to know inara a little more than in the final version...)

I got my theories on this, but well it is borderline conspiracy stuff.

Can't remember where but I read somefic before which mentioned that there are three of these boxes in the series. Not managed to come across a reference to the other two, so I am not sure if that was for that particular fic or an observation. (I can't rememebr where I read it either!)

I suppose post-op estrogen treatments are unlikely...

I think it's unlikely that Inara has a drug dependency issue. If you were a junkie, do you really think you'd head out aboard a tramp steamer with no way to be sure of access to your fix of choice?

Unless she's in denial, or has a huge stash tucked away, or thinks this is the best way to go cold turkey, I don't see a crack-ho-Inara signing on to Serenity.

Is that what Joss and Co. intended? I doubt it. But it would have made for a fascinating story line! Phaedra explores this in her WIP The Pillow Book of Inara Serra. Talk about dark and angsty! Jimminy Christmas!

I highly recommend it. It is one of the finest works of fanfic that I've read. And I've read a lot. If you like it, be sure to poke her for an update. She's a brilliant writer, but could quite possibly be the slowest fic writer on earth.

I *heart* Phaedra!

glad to see that this was in the script, but not on the DVDs-- thought I'd missed it.

Now, for the $ 64,000 ( or 1 million ) question: does it count if it's in the script but not on the DVDs? Does it count if it's in other non-canon published material ( e.g., the RPG game.)? Does it count if the cast thought it up ( e.g., Alan Tudyk's back story for Wash?) Does it count if it got filmed but deleted in editing ( e.g., the long deleted scene in OMR, which is great, and funny, but Joss decided it needed to be cut for time reasons)?

I don't suggest answers, I just ask the questions.

IMO, if it's in a shooting script but not in the final filmed episode, it's not canon.

It does, however, give an insight into the thought processes of Joss and the other writers. It well may have been intended as a "tidbit" that would then be expanded on in later episodes. So, it's perfectly valid to speculate about it.

I wrote a fic to that effect some time back, so I don't think it's out of the question.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I would say that if it is in the shooting script that has been published in one of the companion books, then it has to be considered canon, since Joss approved all of those.

Hoo, boy, here's a can o' wriggly things.

Canon.

The OVC's, yes. But I'm not convinced about the RPG book. The novelisation could be considered, since it remains fairly close to the script as shot; however, maybe it's just a very superior kind of fanfic. And as for the unshot episode 'Dead or Alive' - it was obviously mined out for the 'Message' storyline, but has things that can be used. (Can't stop the Turtle!)

I think I've adopted what you could consider a very 'Firefly' approach - if I can see or read it, it can be broken down for parts. Sometimes you have to import a bit to replace a wonky piece. Once you get into post-BDM territory, you're in uncharted space. Which is probably why I looked over the edge and went bibbledy...
