There be scores of Browncoats that are in hearty agreement.

Im new to the FF/Serenity Verse, and just blown away with the quality of the series...from the production, to the writing and directing, to the tremendous acting.

This is definitely a rare gem that only comes along so often. Definitely holds true with most things in life... to find things that are of great quality you have to really search for it. Big companies and Big productions can market whatever gorram crap they like, but in the end great quality work and art shines through.

I wish so badly I had seen the series first. If I had, then when Serenity was going down to Mr. Univere's planet at the end, I'm certain I'd have choked up. As it was, I'd only had the length of the movie to fall in love with the ship, and I was so busy learning about the fleshy characters, I hadn't had the chance. Very much wish I'd seen the series first...

Is it sad that if I had the opportunity to go back in time and change one thing, that would be it?

Blade Runner was definitely a most excellent movie. FF, like blade runner, really establishes a set of characters that makes you, not only care about, but wanna take 'em all out for a beer. Joss really uses some nifty directing tricks to really pull you into the set and characters.

Heck im not even done with going through the tv series for the first time, and im already a registered BC, *looks down, hey my belly is purple too*

There have been, shall we say, a fair number of movies made over the last century or so. Picking out just one as "the best", whatever that means, is problematic.

How can you even compare a "Serenity" to a "Lawrence of Arabia", or "Airplane", or "The Opening of Misty Beethoven"? On what single scale are these all comparable? They're completely different from each other.

I will say this: "Serenity" is the one and only motion picture that I can watch again and again without getting bored or sick of it. In fact, I find it difficult to watch a small part of it (to get the exact wording of a quote, say, or to test some new speakers) without getting hooked into watching the whole thing.

Of course, there's an easy way out of this dilemma, if we read the title of this thread literally. Of course "Serenity" is the best GORRAM movie, since it's the only movie ever made to use the word "gorram".

All the other movies are good in their own way. So is Serenity but in a very special way. Serenity reaches into the heart with the reality of the people in it.

How can any movie be better than Chitty Chitty Bang Bang? I mean seriously that movie is solely responsible for the entire British accent because all Brits were so totally taken by Dick Van Dyke's performance that they adopted his accent used in that movie. Of course just about every Brit, Aussie, and Kiwi has gotten the accent all wrong, but we have to give them kudos for trying.

I'll say this much. The collectors edition is the only DVD box where I like the back more than the front. Where's the back pic of River in all her glory?!?!?! I can't even stand the US release poster. At a swift glance without a title she's hardly even recognizable as River. I have the international poster adorning my walls.

Anyway, Serenity is the greatest gorram movie of all time. For scifi anyway and when you take into account rewatchability(yep that's not really a word) it moves it to the top above all others. Star Wars(especialy the horrible prequals), the Star Trek films, even Blade Runner can hardly claim the depth of character and heart and just sheer shininess of Serenity. I had heard some buzz about the film and saw one of 11th Hour's guerrilla marketing posters at a local used DVD shop and took a chance on the DVD. I had remembered the TV series on the way home(A series I forgot to even watch seeing as it was so poorly promoted) and put off watching the movie until I had the series. Took a week and a half to get here and I bought it for 30 bucks on ebay(not bad back then). I've now converted atleast three of my family members into Browncoats and gotten a couple others to at least enjoy the show considerably, yet they don't really love it enough to be Browncoats.

I would say no. That would be the orginal Star Wars movies (no prequels) Or Galaxy Quest, or many others I can't think of right now. It was great to see them on the big screen, but it pales in comparison to it's parent show. As for re-watchability, I've watched it all of 3 times since I got the DVD for xmas years ago and haven't put it in since. Too depressing, too confusing (continuity wise) and just didn't click.

Now if we're talking TV show, then yes, Firefly is the best gorram show ever produced. Which is why it will always be superior and why I'll put that in the tray and leave the movie where it is.

Wanna shoot me for it? I don't give a good gorram hell.

Ok sorry but no way. I can see loving Star Wars more if your a fan and Galaxy Quest was cute and geeky in the most awesome way but comparing it to even Star Wars is a joke. I don't hate the movie at all, in fact I do actually love it. It's just not great on any level. Serenity has a much more serious and engaging plot and honestly a much better lead actor. Tim's a great comedian and does ok drama but he's no Nathan.

Only thing I didn't like about Serenity was killing off Wash, it felt like it was only there to shock people. Yes Book dying was really, really sad but it felt like he died for a reason, and a very good one at that. Wash's death just feels empty and I still hold out hope that if Joss ever makes a sequel he'll find some crazy way to bring him back. Sure he had a big fracking stick through his chest but the Alliance most defiantly has tech that no one else does and who better to steal and brain wash than the pilot? I know, I know sad but I gotta believe that. Same as Mistressahara still believes Galaxy Quest shoulda made a killing at the Oscars.

Who the fuck said I said that? Where in my post did I mention it should have won Oscars? Damn, you make one opinion and people blow it out of context.

Now listen, I watched this show from the first airdate. I put aside my Friday nights just for a glimpse into this fabulous verse. When they delayed it for baseball games I fumed and when they cancelled it I screamed bloody murder over the unfairness of taking it off and putting on some generic teen show. The show WAS and IS the best thing that was on television and it will go down as my favorite. I will always, ALWAYS hate Fux for cancelling my Firefly (and John Doe) and I will always mourne that there will be no more shinyness on my tv screen.

But don't you come on here and assume from what I say that I'm ragging on this movie. It may not have appelaed to me the way the show did but by no means do I think it's shit. I waited a gorram long time for this movie. Helped contribute by getting peoples attention, went to my local radio station, flyers, talked to strangers about this lovely butterfly and when the news came that a movie was being made nobody cheered more than I did. It was what I was waiting for, what all of us who fought hard was waiting for. So understand when I tell you that the continuity WAS WRONG, from the story to the characters, that things seemed off, and that the magic was not as shiney as it was from the show. But that doesn't make it a bad film. But to say it was the greatest. No. In comparison to the show (and THAT'S what I BASE it on) no, and as a stand alone, no. I like it, it'll be in my top 20, but it is a pale comparison to it's tv parent. You probably came into this seeing the movie so you never got to see the development from the show, mores the pity for you. I did, from the first (2nd) epi, so I know in this instance what I'm talking about.

And maybe you should consider people before you go around insulting them and making little jabs at them huh? Nice little Holiday spirit there buddy. Merry fk'in Xmas.

Okay, let's have a little more swearing on Christmas. It just fits right in, doesn't it?

Forgive me, but when I read the original post, the poster seemed to be agreeing that you're entitled to your opinion. The Oscar remark was just off-the-cuff exaggeration, but I took the poster to be quite open to your opinion. And I don't think anyone assumed that you were dismissing the whole movie as worthless.

No one has asked you to keep your opinion to yourself. No one seems to have flamed you or said you're wrong.

Please show a little more tolerance yourself.

Wow, touchy folks about this time of year. Hey if you'd bothered to ask if I meant that as an insult I would have told you I didn't. Unless english isn't your first language or you got the bad end of the stick and your education was in South Carolina (like me) then you should be able to read how I was agreeing with you that Galaxy Quest was a darn good movie I just didn't think it came anywhere near the greatness of even Star Wars, let alone Serenity. I also happened to mention you were entitled to your opinions I just disagreed on that one particular part.

I gotta defend my Browncoat honor though. I watched the series first, loved it so much I nearly cried when I realized that was it(Ok maybe I did a little). I do agree that the movie isn't nearly as great as the TV series but in my experience movies are a completely different story telling format and need reworking to relate a larger picture in an extremely short amount of time as compared to a series. Serenity was much different in tone and delivery than Firefly. Ofcourse I didn't start the movie thinking it was going to be Firefly either. I've seen enough book and TV adaptations to know it would be different in one way or another.

Also if you happen to check other threads we have both posted on you'll notice we have remarkably similar taste in TV.

Anyway this is a stressful time of year and I can imagine how I might blow if someone seemed to be insulting my taste. I apologize if you read that last line any other way than how I meant it, which was as has been guessed by another above, a jest about the Oscars. Next time if you think your being mocked but aren't sure try asking and avoid yourself the coins lost to the cussing jar, please.

Oh BTW everybody have a happy and safe holiday season. Hope your all surrounded by family and friends and if not then sitting in front of a TV watching the best TV show of all time. Or even better still all of the above. ;)

STRANGEBIRD

I just realized I never mentioned that I too love Titan A.E. I have yet to actually find another human off the internet who does though. People either didn't get it, thought "What a cartoon??" and never watched it or just plain never heard of it. If you pick the premise apart you can even find many themes present in Firefly. Mainly humanity post-earth. Ok mostly just humanity post-earth. But it's still a great scifi flick.
Anyway... still I wouldn't say Titan A.E. is the greatest of all time. No movie is perfect and who knows, someday a movie might come along and topple Serenity from is perch. It's very possible, I just hope it's Serenity: Wash Strikes Back*.

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull looks promising but I don't want to get my hopes up and seriously I don't think it will. Wall-E if it's done right might just be the one to just barely top Serenity for me. I love anthropomorphizing robots, especially ones that look very little like humans to begin with. Plus the lack of what looks like any true spoken dialog or human characters(other than possibly one or two) has me hooked.

You can add 5 more, my family thinks its a great movie also. We also like Star Wars(even the prequels, be nice) Star Trek, GalaxyQuest, and of course FF. My wife and I love Serenity, and the kids get to watch selected episodes of FF(they REALLY like Jaynestown!), but the fave is still FF. Plenty of good movies out there, and I won't even get into what is better or best, cause that is so subjective. Plenty of room in the verse for all views, unless you're an Alliance toady!

I have 6 locks on my door and bolt every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they're always locking 3 locks.

Nice to know there are more than just a few of us. I was the only one in my group of family and friends who went to the theater to watch Titan AE. First time I ever went alone... which I've since done many times as it's now my favorite way to view a movie. I've actually been one of only three people in a room before... of course it was an 11:15AM showing... in May... on a school day. I think the movie was Spider-man 3, which I remember not liking as much as the others. Only other people in the theater at all were two kids skipping school.
