Fillion Up For Firefly Film

Nathan Fillion, who played Capt. Mal Reynolds in the short-lived Fox SF TV series Firefly, told SCI FI Wire that he would like to see his character return to his original, darker persona in a potential feature film based on the space western created by Joss Whedon. "One of the things we did on the show was we had to lighten him up a little bit," Fillion said in an interview at the Los Angeles Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention. "I'd like to see him as dark as he was originally conceived. That was something I found a little unusual about him and very unlike me in the beginning and now something I'm anxious to embrace."

Fillion recalled his experience on the show fondly, but criticized his commentary on the recently released DVD box set. "Listening to the commentary that Joss and I did, Nathan should shut up more and listen to Joss a little more," he said. "Joss has 25 different layers of scene and what he's thinking about, and story and through-line and just has a wealth of information, and it's poetic the way he puts it out, and then I'll come in with, 'And then I split my pants.'"

During a panel, which included castmates Gina Torres, Adam Baldwin, Morena Baccarin and Ron Glass, Fillion said that nothing could keep him from starring in the film should it go into production. "I would cancel dialysis to be in the movie," he said. Firefly: The Complete Series was released on DVD Dec. 9.

Also, in an unrelated article posted today at SciFi.com, Tim Minear said his new post-Firefly series "WonderFalls" has been delayed by Fox because they are not sure what to do with it.

"I think it's a hard show to sell, and I think that's one of the reasons that they're not quite sure when they're going to air it," Minear said. "Because they want to approach the marketing very carefully. It's not really like anything you've seen. People aren't sure if it's a comedy. They don't know what it is."

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

fox is probably fixin' to put the screw to minear again! didn't he learn his lesson with firefly? i think of mal as a combination of mad max:the road warrior and john wayne(the duke) with alittle dirty harry thrown in. jayne has great quotable lines and i'd like to see him as more of an eli wallach (good,bad, and the ugly) type. kaylee could stand to "evilled up" a little. always thought simon was a wimp, but he's really quite the scrapper! to close, maybe wonderfalls will go straight to dvd and skip the hassle of having to be cancelled. to fox i give the one-fingered salute again!

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I think a darker Mal would be interesting. I always thought there was a lot of potential to tap w/ Mal & his past, especially concerning the war and the Battle of Serenity Valley.

It is great to hear that Nathan is so committed to doing the movie if it makes its way to the big screen.

I'd like to see him embrace it too. Not that I didn't enjoy the lighter side of Mal, but there was something a bit more real about the way Mal was originally portrayed.

Well, I think his singing along with the theme more than makes up for the pants splitting reiteration, but that may just be me.

Thread hijack alert!

I was fortunate enough to see the Wonderfalls pilot (or at least one version of the pilot). The cast right through is great, especially the lead; the story was dramatic, funny and tight; the pace natural and enjoyable. I think this has the ingredients of a hit. Way to go Tim! (So, JR, it *does* sound familiar -- Fawks won't know what to do with another hit . . . )

I just saw Serenity straight through on the dvd for the first time and I was really struck this time in particular by how brutal Mal Reynolds is. I've always found him to be a disturbing person. He's such an amazing combination of decency and viciousness. I've always thought he'd make a great Arigorn, actually. I think the whole show does best at it's darkest--War Stories, Objects in Space, Ariel, even Bushwacked are some of the very best episodes. Take me out into the black, tell 'em I ain't coming back, indead!

Can't wait to see to the movie!

Joss makes a statement on the commentary track to "Serenity" to the effect that Mal has lost everything. This makes a dark Mal interesting; what do you do when you've lost everything? Lose your ethics too, or adapt them to harsh reality, or hold to them as the only thing (other than the sky) that they can't take from you? I can't imagine him totally dark; the series is built around the ways that he holds to decency when others don't (as in the other captain in OOG, who shoots him and says, "You'd do the same," to which Mal replies, "You can see already that I haven't.")

I love Joss Whedon's fascination with people who are supposed to be bad but turn out to be good, and people who are supposed to be good but are drawn to the bad. It's all over "Buffy" and "Angel" and you can see it in so many of the characters in "Firefly"--in all of them, in fact!

Do we want a darker Mal? I thought the balance between that dark cold heart being balanced by a surface of false bravado and dry ironic humor was what made Mal so special. Take that away and he's just a heartless criminal.

I think the movie should start with Mal as he was in the television series. Still with a glimmer of hope despite everything bad that's been done to him, and we the audience should be reminded/educated about all the bad stuff that's gone on for him since the war ended with him as a loser. THEN. Something particularly bad should go down. He should literally lose the ship. I don't mean it blows up. That happens too much in these film adaptations of scifi shows. The Enterprise has blown up like three times in the movies. No, it should be taken from him in such a way where it becomes the prize should he win the day. However, to get there he has to go to that dark place in his soul and embrace it.

I'm saying Serenity should get taken over by Reavers, and in order to defeat them Mal almost becomes one himself. Then his friends pull him back from the brink.

OOH! Or! He loses Serenity in a drunken poker game with Badger and spends the rest of the film berating himself for being so stupid, and the rest of the crew works with him in a desperate plan to win the ship back...

No, actually the Reaver idea would make better film. More baddies to shoot at and blow up.

No!!! I have to disagree! Kaylee is the heart and soul of Serenity. To have her "evilled up" would seriously hurt her credibility as the indestructibly ray of sunshine that is part of why Mal and the others can still have hope, regardless of what happens to them.

I agree, Astriana! Kaylee is all heart...more importantly I think she's about the only thing in the world Mal smiles about. He loves everyone on the ship, but Kaylee is the embodiment of the love, innocence and optimism he lost.

Also, bring on the darker Mal! One of the best shots is War Stories:

"You wanna meet the real me now?"

Not too much darker. I like Mal in Serenity, before Fox requested that he be funnier. There's nothing wrong with funny, I suppose, but I preferred the dark humour he possessed earlier on. (Eg: "Kaylee's dead.")

yeah. i'd like to see a darker mal, but just a little bit. Make him too dark and i'd definitely see it as a problem. I always liked how, even though mal has been through a really tough life he still is able to hold on to some degree of his compassion and sense of right and wrong. I really dont want to see mal as a captain bleigh from mutiny on the bounty.
