I thought about this the other day. When I take the younglings out for Halloween this year, thought I'd dress like one, but thus far, not much luck in finding a good one.

Starting at USD $534 CAD $550. YIKES!!! I guess so. That's a little more than I want to spend for a Halloween costume - LOL.

Whip,

Here is the thread where Tristan first announced the making of Browncoats.

http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=13&t=22196

It should contain all the info you need to get one from him.
He's an excellent costumer and an amazing guy.

Well said, FollowMal!! I just saw this thread title and I immediately thought of Tristan. He's a wonderful example of the Browncoat community, and a good dinner coversationalist as well. If you ever get to Anniston, AL., look him up and buy him a meal at Top O' the River.

So who is he?
He's my husband.
Well who in the damn galaxy ain't!

I got mine at a coat shop in New Hope, PA (just on the off-chance you're anywhere near there ). It's actually oilskin, but everybody keeps saying it really makes my Mal costume. AAAAAAND, it was one-third the regular price ($300 coat that I got for $100) - so whenever somebody says my coat is sort of a brownish colour, I get to tell them truthfully that it was on sale!!

Yep, got one from Banana Republic, a nice topcoat which I used regularly during the winter.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I found one in a thrift store for twenty bucks. It's a nice soft brown color and all leather and pretty. If you have a Savers in your area, that's where I would suggest checking. Also, there is Ebay, which tends to have at least ten leather coats up for bid at any given time. Friend of mine found hers that way. It was very dark brown, but it's still a leather browncoat for twenty-five bucks.

I highly recommend the Tristan one as it is not just a great coat in the style of the Browncoats but it's also a great coat in its own right.

My wife made one for my son based on pictures we found online as well as the DVD's. Turned out pretty good, and a whole lot cheaper than ordering one, too!

In the style of Mal's coat. Which is a great coat, of course, but there is no 'style of the Browncoats'. Monty had a different coat, Zoe had a different coat, and I'm sure if we'd seen more old war buddies they would have had different coats as well. They were the Browncoats because, it's likely, brown coats and dusters were readily available on the frontier worlds, and it was the best way to have a rough 'uniform' or way to identify each other. Part of what makes it so shiny is that they were fighting for Independence, and they all had their unique coat.
If you want Mal's coat, by all means go after Mal's coat. But if you want a Browncoat and don't want to spend too much, don't think you have to have one just like Mal's. Be Independent!

Madness does not always howl. Sometimes, it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "Hey, is there room in your head for one more?"

Browncoats are forever

Incidentally, Museum Replicas Limited (catalog in print and online) sells a licensed version that looks pretty cool. At least they did at the last printing; they could be out now. It is pricey, and maybe it is the same as some that have already been mentioned; not sure since I didn't have time to check the links. I can't speak as to quality except in roundabout way. I've purchased swords from MRL (including the Reaver sword/axe set from the movie; don't normally go in for that kind of thing, but Windlass Steelcrafts was making them, so I knew they'd be quality) and they've been good blades, and some relatives bought dresses from the catalog that I believe they were happy with, but I can't speak personally to the clothing in MRL.
