Okay, butting in here with an idea I've been mulling over. I wouldn't call it a prediction, really, more of a possible path Rowling might have decided to take.

The key idea is that Harry Potter is, in fact, a squib.

Now, hear me out...

Nobody knows when, to whom, or why a squib is born. We know they happen in "the best of wizarding families". And since Harry was only 15 months old when he had his encounter with Voldemort, there's no way anyone could tell if he did or didn't have magical ability. (Remember that Neville's family didn't get concerned about him until he was quite a bit older, a toddler at least.)

But wait, we know Harry is magical. He does well in school, flies a broomstick, and so on. True enough. I'm suggesting that he can only do that because he has a share of Voldemort's magical ability. Not his soul -- I'm not in the "Harry's scar is a horcrux" school -- just his powers.

Evidence? Harry was "chosen" by the wand that's the brother of Voldemort's wand. Harry is a parselmouth, only the second in what, maybe centuries? And guess who is the other! Those things happened because in terms of his magical side, Harry IS Voldemort.

So what if this is true? What does it mean for the end of the series? This is where it could be a "third course" for Rowling. Harry may not have to die to defeat Voldemort, since he doesn't have a piece of his soul. But he may have to give up his magical powers, and just be an ordinary teenage boy. That would be a tremendous sacrifice -- he'd never hold a prominent place in the wizarding world, would never play Quiddich again, and would be caught between the wizarding and Muggle worlds, far worse than most squibs because he once was a powerful wizard but is no more.

You see the beauty of this? Harry lives, but is diminished. Jo is off the hook for more sequels, since Harry wouldn't be particularly interesting as an ordinary human. And the moral message is intact: no great thing can be accomplished without sacrifice.

Well, we'll see if I've come anywhere close.

Oh, and Harry marries Luna. That's not negotiable.

Quite the opposite, actually

MsG did, however, leave a pretty big spoiler out in the open up above, which surprises me a little, given her dislike of such things.

I like the idea of Harry pairing with Luna, mostly because I am very fond of the character (and the casting in the most recent movie was spot on, that little girl was perfect for the part). Then again, there has been so much buildup and tension for a thing with Ginny. *shrug*

So Jimi, what kind of pants are you wearing?!

By the way, whilst waiting for P-Day I've thoroughly enjoyed reading the first Dresden book. Great fun! I've ordered the second two to take on holiday with me.

I am wearing khaki pants, and grey boxer shorts

I still have several stacks of books to read, though I never make time for them. I also have a stack of borrowed (and bought) movies that I have yet to watch, and several GabeCube games to play. *sigh* I did tell Ami, however, that when the mail comes on Saturday, I am going to be useless for several hours while I devour Deathly Hallows. :)

"No power in the 'verse can stop me!"

Jimi-bear!!! You and me both Babe! My best friend and I are going to collect ours at 9am sharp which is when it is released in Melbourne! That is simultaneous with midnight in the UK by the way!!

We have cleared our schedules for the weekend, though we did already have theatre tickets booked months ago and therefor prior to the release date!! So we go to Sweet Charity and then continue to read until we complete the book!

I kind of like that theory Don! It's original in my experience - mind you I stopped hanging out in any of the HP forums a couple of years ago... they were nowhere near as welcoming as the browncoats are and I felt like the topics of conversation were limited and just going around and around in circles... they took themselves way too seriously too!

Did you know that JK Rowling got hate mail and people telling her she ought to stop writing Harry's story and allow someone else to do it since she clearly didn't know that Harry and Hermione were destined for one another... she had to politely but firmly point out that, not only were they fictitious characters and not real ones, but they athey were her fictitious characters and therefor they were destined to be with whomever she decided they were destined to be with...

Hey Emma! How's the weather today - we had a downpour in Melbourne that threw traffic into chaos and damaged gas lines all over the place!! No underpants showing anywhere though!

Hello dearest Penguin!! how are you feeling today Honey?

Hi Hobbleit!! You staying dry today too?

ummmmm...Jimi-bear... are they silk grey boxers?

Still raining on and off here, I'm looking forward to jetting off to Turkey in 5 days time! (I went into the travel agent last Saterday to book a weekend in Barcelona for me and my friend and it kind of grew to a week in Turkey. How's that for impulsive?!)

I didn't actually mean you could delete my pants! It's pretty chilly today. Let's settle for something silky and coordinated!

Whilst we're on the subject (and how does that keep happening anyway?!), is it just me who doesn't seem to own any matching bra/ knicker sets? I'm in serious need of a visit to La Senza!

Ho, hum! Can someone give me something else to talk about now that doesn't leave me feeling foolish and embarrassed?

No Emma... I used to have several lovely sets, but a few years without a romance... well one in the flesh anyway... and several good bra sales and separate sales for the purchasing of knickers left me with an odd assortment of underwear which I was planning to remedy before my trip to the US, but which I don't think I will bother with now...

Anyway... how did we get onto this subject without MsG around???

Well I am glad you have one pair at least Jimi-bear!! So who are you talking to on the phone right now Honey?

Jimi is the gentleman; he opted not to go there by letting us know he wasn't going there. He's from the South. They raise them like that down there, gentlemanly like. I'm just a leering, dirty old man. That's how we are up here in the North. In the Midwest. Dingy and gray is all we have and all we see.

If you're sure it was an accident (although having an accident invloving underpants usually has a completely different meaning around here, too) I apologize for sexploiting you. I think anyone who becomes a phychologist is insane. They're either trying to ignore their own insanity by focusing on that of others, or they're trying to understand their insanity.

So there's rumors that Deathly Hallows had been leaked. Anyone believe it?

Didn't that happen to the last book as well?

I heard about it, but didn't read into it.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Yeah, but the last one was a stupid shop that put the books out as soon as they got them, rather than waiting for the drop date, and they likely got the pants sued off them. This is a claim that the manuscript was lifted from the computers at Scholastic. Oh, and also that someone got a hard copy of the book and took a photo of each page.
I don't buy it either way.

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

Now, hear me out...

I kind of like that theory Don! It's original in my experience

Doesn't matter if you're close or not. It's brilliant. Start wrting your own stuff if you haven't already.

It looks like it was leaked in China, but no-one knows if it's the real thing or not.

I don't think it is.
