Good. Thanks for the update.

Well, my place isn't large enough for more than a handful of folks. I guess it depends on how many of us plan to get together!

Dear TSR80,
Found you! Sounds great. I've also gotten the commentary DVD from Mr. Gaines, though I haven't watched it yet. When, Where?

LUNATIKAT

Dear FAHQ (Would you be willing to tell me what that means, by the way?)
Now I am in love. I didn't get offended, but did wonder if I was imagining a tetchiness, or it was there, and I think it is so very nice to see someone taking the high road and trying to make peace rather than responding in kind (while still not accepting the vulgarity). Its so easy for these on-line conversations to become confrontational when we have no faces or voices to fill out the meaning of our words. You reassure me.
Anyway, your original post was very thought-provoking. I agree with someone who answered something along the lines of the state of the world today being why we need our escape so very much, but even more than that need for escape, I actually feel that it is, for most of us, the most effective arena for change available to us.
After the last presidential election it became impossible for me to persuade myself that I have ANY say in the federal government. (For god's sake, they can throw my vote in the trash and I can do NOTHING about it!) I now am convinced that any attempt to get me to vote or to believe that my vote has any meaning is propaganda whose sole purpose is to keep me from violent revolt. If this view is correct, then the most subversive activity available to me is that activity which communicates this message to others. And this we may do very well through art.
Now I love Firefly, the stories, the setting, the look, the music, the attractive and talented cast, all of that; but there's a higher purpose that is served here. All these things help sell one philosophy; that individual freedom is to be highly valued and that it is not possible under a powerful single government. And I believe that's what stirs such incredible loyalty and enthusiasm in Firefly fans. WE BELIEVE IN FREEDOM, and we love this show because its excellent production values are the rightful showcase for that idealistic philosophy (and vice versa, a show that looks/is this good MUST have a worthy core value system to completely satisfy us). Whether you're a cerebral word-loving tonk like myself, or a more visceral physical person, you know on some level, through intellectual argument and discussion or through a gut certainty, that Firefly IS important. Not just because some of us like it or love it. But because this is how we transmit our values from individuals to the culture at large: we model it in our art forms.
When Mal says to Jayne when Jayne says he too was pinched by the Feds, "Which is what happens when you call the Feds.", the message gets out, in, as was said by a playwright in a Trek Voyager episode "in words no one can possibly misunderstand."
I truly don't believe I have the political power to change things. You may, I ain't sayin'. And maybe I'm wrong, and my belief is causing me to throw away power I have. You're welcome to educate me out of my error if it's important to you. But don't worry, I haven't given up. Political power is only one way of making change. People with political power would like to make the rest of us forget that and concentrate all our efforts where we are the weakest. Don't let them. Don't let the fact that arts budgets are being cut in every school in the country stop you from reading to your kids, singing with them, pointing out the beauty and art in the world they live in. Don't let the fact that it's "just a TV show" or movie or video game or anything else make-believe stop you from acknowledging the meta-reality of the values these fictional art forms transmit. Don't worry that you're taking any of this "too seriously", and should place a higher concern on "the real world". Take some extra steps and find/make the connections between the things that move you (Example: Firefly) and the things that should also move you (the loss of civil liberties, war, poverty, disease). Simple stupid stuff maybe. Every Shindig to have a canned goods donation for the local foodbank, perhaps. Or a voter registration, for them as feels there is still some power in that vote (the only way to make it true, after all). E-mail trees for political actions. What else?

lunatikat - the truth shall make you fret

I hope Joss Whedon sees this. I went all over Houston looking for this DVD. It was sold out everywhere. Finally, I found a copy at Fry's Electronics. I burned half a tank of gas finding it and paid almost $50 when you count sales tax. I don't care. I couldn't wait for it to be shipped to me and it was worth every penny. I rushed home and watched all the episodes. It's even better the second time you've watched it. As a member of the young male demographic, I hope Fox executives burn in that special hell. You don't fix the bible and you certainly don't cancel it half the way through Genesis...and something about the sabbath not being a Friday. I'm too mad to keep that analogy going. Screw Fox. God bless Joss.

Weighing in because, hey, I can. FAHQ. Bravo! You brought up a topic nobody wanted to discuss and when it became clear nobody wanted to discuss it you dropped it. And apologized. Dyvairtree (or whatever) that is not a troll or a dumbass. That is an extremely intelligent person who clearly had no intention of pissing anyone off.

Back on topic, I bought my DVD set at Target the day after it was released. There were only three left when I grabbed mine and the other two were sold when I checked again a half hour later. The girl who checked me out was a fan too. Very cool.

Hoping that some stores released it the evening before, I hit a couple of Targets' in my area. No such luck.

I live in a part of Chicago where the closest Target to me doesnt sell that many DVDs so when I arrived that afternoon I had no trouble finding one.

I preorded on Amazon.ca can got the DVDs on the 12th. Mighty glad I did too, as I haven't seen a single one on any store shelves. Not that I've been hunting around, but I've perused the DVD sections in a few big stores just to see if I could find them. Nope.

Dunno how hard it is to find the DVDs around here, just for fun, I did check the local Target and they're sold out, also Blockbuster Video didn't even order any to sell in the first place.

Doesn't bother me much, I got my copy from Amazon.

Didn't check in the place where I first heard about the DVD coming out. I mean, I'd heard rumors way back to - maybe February. But first I knew fer sure was walkin' into a place called Coconuts (sell music and movies. great store, only place I've ever seen Dark Angel box sets, and the biggest anime selection in Chester County), and, just on a whim, I asked the clerk to look up Firefly. This was back just around Hallowe'en, and all the guy could tell me was it was on the list, but he couldn't order it. A bit confusing, but enough information to get me online again (gave up on the mailing list idea back around May).
The order came on 12/12, UPS-Ground, no problems. Also, for people who asked early on, no problems with the disks (even disk 4).

I ordered a copy through Amazon which i got on the 10th, i was happy. I also got a lender copy, which i passed on to someone to give as a christmas present to the guy who plays the capatain in my firefly rpg. I went back to Walmart to buy a second copy from them and bought their next to last copy (that gave me pause- what if i was denying some fellow browncoat the joy of Firefly on christmas moring? :) and gave that away as a christmas present because i had hints that i'd be getting the DVD for christmas.

(Get this- I was spoiling christmas by not waiting two weeks to get it... weird! I've been watching the videos, last years' comercials and all, for 16 months!)

I got Ladyhawke and Reign of Fire instead, both good movies, but now i need to go buy another copy as a spare...work, work, work...

BOOK Yes, I'd forgotten you're moonlighting as a criminal mastermind now. Got your next heist planned?
SIMON No. But I'm thinking about growing a big black mustache. (beat; deadpan) I'm a traditionalist.

Well, I got my copy for christmas :) Been watching this show ever since I saw it by accident way back when it was on Fox.

I'll never forgive them for cancelling my two favourite shows of all time: firefly and family guy. I sure as hell hope they fired whoever was responsible for the family guy cancellation, considering how well the dvd's have done.

I'm really hoping the same thing will happen with firefly. good dvd sales mean maybe a network will pick it up
