I am junior faculty at a state university and during the summer, the dress code is a bit more informal. Anyway, I was at a meeting and I galnced over and saw a T-shirt with the quote "I aim to misbehave!" on the back. I then did a quick double take because the shirt was covering our former dean, a professor emeritus of more than a little fame.

I took a chance and came up and said, "Shiny Shirt Sir". I was expecting something like "it's my son's shirt". What I got was a wink and a five minute discussion on how Simon's chracter is often misunderstood.

This man is in the five smartest people I have ever met category. Like I said, Brown Coats are EVERYWHERE ;-)

(sigh) Heard of any other Browncoats in South Korea? Sure wouldn't mind a shindig 'round about now. Been here over a year now...hard times...

I'd like to hear how Simon is misunderstood as well!

Similiar story with my new job though. First day I met someone who was a huge browncoat and a nice talk with him (probably not as intelligent as your discussion but a talk none-the-less) and then a few days later a coworker asked my boss (a big scifi fan) if he was into any new shows. My boss started on the new BSG but when my coworker said he'd just gotten into Firefly my boss replied that he'd seen and thought the movie was really great. Then I chimed in of course. Shiny day all around I'd say.

I seem to run into Browncoats at the bookstore a lot. Usually they are employees. Which might explain why Firefly is always on an endcap, nice and prominent. ;)

I suggest

1. Check out http://serenitymovie.com.au/ or http://groups.yahoo.com/group/browncoats_downunder/ At least it is on the right side of the globe.

2. Start a yahoo goup for South Korea.

3. Start a thread here Any Browncoats in South Korea?

4. Check out the military bases nearby. People have been sending Firefly and Serenity DVDs to the troops for years now. Also the bases sometimes have theaters and maybe together you could arrange a screening of Serenity or Firefly episodes.

5. Got any Serenity Logo shirts you can wear around. Leave the Firefly DVD box around your desk. Brown Coats are EVERYWHERE!

Episode 5 and 6 of Tim (Firefly) Minear's Drive with Nathan Fillion to air on Fox FRIDAY 7/13/2007 8/7 c

Other than being pretty far from most of the bases, that is some good advice. Thanks!

IMHO, the professor in question is definitely in the top 3% in academia. I think he rather identifies with Simon. His discussion had to do with Simon's sarcasm. He said that really bright people often say things that seem sarcastic, but they are really just thinking faster than those around them. When what they say that often sounds like sarcasm (esspecially when they are younger) is just them thinking three steps ahead. They then fall into a sarcastic mind set because its an easy defense mechanism for them. This learned professor said the Joss captured that speech pattern and mind set perfectly, but wonders how many folks got it.

That part was cool. Then the part where they said my grant proposal wasn't going to be accepted wasn't so hot but I am pretty junior and it was expected.

I've been wearing my blue sun t-shirt to work on train etc. no one has piped up yet. But I do live in unfriendly London. Well the trains are at least!

I think people are just yet to be educated on the shinier aspets of life!
