Our GM has commissioned our team to steal a statue/model of a ship out of the central lobby of the El Dorado Pleasure cruiser. We have a team of 8 players and 6 tickets to get on board the ship. Our doc and cook can get on as hired hands. We have our captain and our "contacts" guy, our mechanic/demolitions expert and three gun hands. The lobby is smack dab in the middle of the gorram ship (schematics located in the Serenity RPG guide on pages 130-132)

Other than getting our Doc and Cook on board we're scratching our heads as to how to proceed and our GM is getting fustrated.

Any ideas??

Idea 1: Big-ass distraction. Food-fight in the executive dining room. Fire in the engine room. Reaver attack. Get the lower decks crew to mutiny. Jayne gets naked. (False) radiation leak confines everyone to quarters (except for our intrepid thieves).

Idea 2: Get them to give it to you. It's made of asbestos. They're being sued by the Independent People's Caliphate of Bluffington Cliffs. Anti-Alliance terrorists have planted a bomb (get your heroes dressed up in official-looking suits, with badges).

Play it up as an Ocean's 11-style casino hit.

This one is a brute force kind of heist.

I imagine that there is a skylight in this room as it wouldn't make sense if it didn't.

Have your doc and/or cook smuggle on (or get smuggled on) space suits for them. Stash these in this room or right around it. At some point when the Alliance isn't around on there trip have whoever is on board get the suits, go to the room.

Fly your ship in and land people on it and blow the skylight.

This assumes that it is a space-y kind of ship. If the water kind make the necessary adjustments.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Any idea of what security is like? How many guards watch the statue? Are they armed? Is the statue in some sort of case? Does the case have security measures on it?

How many exits are there from this hall? Is there a means of entrance in the ceiling or floor?

Need some more info before I can suggest anything that is very helpful.

LOL love the suggestions, especially anything with a naked Jayne Cobb, but since we don't have a Jayne Cobb, we might have to make due with our mechanic or one of our gun hands.

GM hasn't given us full details on the security and layout yet, but there's some stuff in the
RP guide I might be able to relay once I get home from work today. Just bringing up that stuff might help us get a good outline for a plan anyway.

Much Thanks!

Does it matter how many innocent people get killed? If so, you might want to rethink the "blow the skylight" concept a tiny bit.

Maybe, like Jubal Early, you could just come down the chimney.

You're assuming that others aside from the team is in the room at the time of the blow out. All one would have to do is lock down the room first. Which would actually be safer for the player characters as well.

This could be accomplished by first slightly compromising the window before blowing it completely. Or pulling the fire alarm or tricking the system into thinking there is a fire in the room, etc. etc.

All of these would lock down the room.

You might try the old switch-a-roo plan.

Find out what happens if the alarms are set off. Is the room locked down completely? Guards rush in? The item moved to a safe vault?

In the confusion of the alarm switch the item with a fake.

Options to think about.
Impersonate Security, either internal or hired by the owner/insurance company.
Have a 'patsy' from your crew who takes the item and gets caught. Switch the item before or during the 'arrest.' Your Crew then hauls him off to be processed.
False alarm. Alarms go off, the item is still there. But is it really?
System wide electronics failure would be too much of an indicator of a heist. Tap in to the security grid and record 'normal' conditions, then play it back as you make your move.
Riot, Pirate or Reaver attack distractions.
A good heist is like a stage magician's act. Misdirection is the key, but the misdirection needs to seem natural, not obvious.

You could also reference old heist and caper movies for other ideas:
