i thought it would be fun to post about hearing a line from the show incorrectly and feeling stupid or silly about it. heres mine.

jaynestown, when inara and fess are getting started and mr higgins barges in. given the nature of inara's line of work, i thought she said "companion breeding ceremony". i had to put the subtitles on. its 'greeting' ceremony.....

Hmmm, I must admit I didn't realize what Mal was saying when he said "We got a very tight schedule, Yo-Saf-Bridge...". I thought "Yo-Saf-Bridge" was a Chinese phrase :P

In the BDM, on the very first viewing, I heard Mal tell Book, "Shoulda come after you. Shoulda come after me."

I thought, that can't be right.

Nathan actually says "Should'n'a come after you" but he does slur it a bit. Maybe if the budget was $41 mil Joss would've reshot it or done a pickup.

For a second I thought Mal was saying, "Should've been you!"

Haha, yeah and it doesn't help that the subtitles for that one says that it's Chinese...guess they were fooled too!
For me it's just that Mal's words are slurred sometimes, making it hard to tell what he says at times...

I personally havn't misheard any lines from the series or movie (at least none I can remember), but this thread reminds me of something really cool.

Some of the most famous quotes in pop culture in reality have never actually been said. Like the one line associated with STAR TREK ("Beam me up, Scotty.") has never actually been said. In the original series it's always "(number) to be beamed aboard, Mr. Scott." or a variation of that. But never "Beam me up, Scotty." Probably too informal for Starfleet.

Two of Bogart's most famous movies, CASABLANCA and THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE, both have a famous quote that's never actually said. For the former, it's "Play it again, Sam." But in the movie, she says "Play it, Sam. For old time's sake. Play "As Time Goes By." And he says "If you can play it for her, you can play it for me." And for the latter, the line supposedly is "We don't need no stinking badges." But the line actually is "Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges. I don't have to show you any stinking badges."

So it's an interesting phenomena that a quote can be iconic without it actually being said.

"No."
"Have you ever fired ONE gun whilst jumping through the air?"

I still to this day do not know what Mal says to Simon at the end of Safe after they walk up to the pyre. All I hear is

Mal: Gotta say doctor, you *mumbleslursomethingsomething*"

Does anybody know what he says? I've asked and asked and nobody's been able to tell me. Even the captions says *mumbling*.

And at the end of Jaynestown with Mal and Jayne talking on the catwalk Jayne says something that for the longest while I thought was chinese, but he says something like why would he do that, or something like that. Quite a few movies and shows with mumbled un-intelligible phrases.

I know what you mean, at first I wondered what he said at the end of Safe as well.

I never looked at the subtitles to be certain, but it sounds to me that he says "Gotta say, Doctor, your talent for alienating folks has been miraculous".

Well, that makes sense if it's the right words, at least it's something to cover the mumbling.

Houdini, your are amazing.

Hello Reginaroadie:

The Badges quote is one I use a lot. I never paid much attention to the whole dialogue and I am lazy anyway, so I misquote it. I Usaully say "Badges. We/I don't need no stinking badges."

I remember Cary Grant on the Johnny Carson show saying "Every mimic has him saying, 'Judy Judy Judy', and I never said that in my life."

It just shows you how careful you half to be when studing history. People will write the most popular quotes down and not bother to learn the real ones.

In the script, it's: "...is near miraculous".

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I haven't misheard anything that I can remember, but I do get rather annoyed when the cafepress shirts, etc, mess up important quotes from the show/movie. "I am a leaf on the wind. See how I soar." is a big mistake I see, and it grates on me. There are several others that I can't think of right this minute. They pop up in taglines here, too, sometimes, so I'll keep my eyes out

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.
