I still maintain that no one (including the starter of the thread) has the authority to dictate the content or the direction of a thread. What do some of the rest of you think about that? Should the thread starter be allowed to dictate such things? Should anyone?

O, I agree you can, if you wish, win this fight; discuss anything you wish to discuss here, you "can". Have at it.

I like this "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" thing I do... and, if I felt about a thread strongly, and wished someone to move onto another thread, and it didn't cost them nuthin to do it, I'd want 'em to do it.

I won't be posting in this thread again. Later folks!

Causal,

Yes they should be able to do that. If there's a specific topic the OP wants to have discussed, it's his or her right to get the discussion back on track if and when it gets taken elsewhere by somebody who goes off on a tangent and drags others along with him/her.

As a comparison, if there's a political discussion on, say, abortion, and the panel veers off and discusses, say, Iraq, one would reasonably expect the moderator to get the panel back to discussing abortion.

I'm of course well aware of the irony of my discussing this with you disrespects the wishes of River for us to stay on topic.

Questions are a burden to others. Answers are prison for oneself.

I agree with you. Once begun, a thread belongs to its participants. This is actually very topical, in the sense that Attack Of The Show posed a variant of this question last week on one of its The Loop segments. Specifically, they asked whether forums belong to its users, or is it the right of the forum owners to censor content and speech on their forum. While the interviewees sort of danced around the issue to a lesser or greater degree, the viewers' poll AOTS simultaneously conducted returned +80% that forums belong to the users and that speech/content should not be censored for being unrepresentative of the forum's stated mission.

...of course, that was probably just a bunch of trolls multi-voting...

Vox Popularly,

P.S.
While I've seen a thread originator try to keep folks on track, I've never seen one try as hard as RiveR6213 to end a thread. This is what? Her third or fourth attempt to gently guide people toward the exit? This desire for control at both ends of the life span seems a little overly manipulative of the participants, to me...but, hey, put it down to differing notions of hospitality...

Having said that, this thread is over for me. I know when to leave a party. The hostess is in danger of being ungracious; I wouldn't want to be the cause of that. Peace to all, and I'll see you around GenDis, when another meaningful topic arises.

I wonder if you wrote that with a straight face?

How is it possible that I was being "ungracious?" Everyone had their say, and the topic was winding down. At a certain point people started to go off-topic, so I repeated my lack of involvement...it didn't mean that the topic was over for all of you, it meant it was over for me, so you misinterpreted my intentions when I was thanking everyone for having participated in the thread. Then of course as predicted, people in the topic really went off topic in a big way. At that point I had had enough and the people who were really interested in this thread stopped posting, and what was left was your usual trouble makers who simply wanted to argue and brow-beat.

Religious topics are the hardest topics to maintain. There has to be a moderator in topics like this, or else people forget themselves and the topic itself goes off course as we have all seen happen when such topics are created. Troll Country is FULL of old religious threads that went wrong.

I was shooting for the topic to end on a good note, and not degenerate into just another Real World Events "I'm right you are wrong!" ego fest, which is what this thread was heading for in short order.

And I don't believe that it is fair for you to label me as controlling, or manipulative. If you scroll back through the thread you will find that I was reasonable the whole time. The people who have known me from the past can vouch that last year, I would not have behaved this way. If I had created such a thread last year I would have been yelling and swearing throughout the whole topic. I would have tumbled this topic off in to Troll Country in short order by turning it into an ego fest because they have seen me behave this way in the past. Those days are long over and I am a different person, so I believe you are saying these things just to be inflammatory and trying to get a negative reaction, and attempting to blame the whole demise of this topic on me, when it was others when all you have to do is read the whole thread and all of the evidence of what happened is written right there. Nice try but no cigar for you.

With that said. Once again I would like to thank all the reasonable people who took the time to be in this topic and had something of value to add to it. I got a lot of things out of this thread...you could say I got a whole different way of looking at the question and for that I am happy.

See you in the next topic

-River

All living it out, in a sunlit place of sanity and reasonableness, un disturbed by cataloque salesmen, chavs, serial killers, scientologists, those who talk at the theatre and anyone who ever bought a Cheeky Girls album.

ahhhh, bliss.

I went through a similar think - not a big deep one, never had much time for religion - but questioning the why's and wherefores, and came out the opposit way - if there was no deity behind it all, there didn't seem to be much of a point, except exisiting, but what was the issue with just existing? I just decided to me choosing to believe cause just because the alternative was not a nice idea was just deluding myself. (Edited cause it really could have been seen as offensive!)

I'm always ready to reconsider, but so far nothing has made me want to.

Isn't sanity really a one trick pony, anyway? I mean all you get is one trick, rational thinking! But when you're good and crazy...ooh hoo hoo hoo... the skys the limit!
