Anybody care to guess the plot of the Firefly movie?

I thought I'd list some of my thoughts. This is not a fanfic. It's a prediction.

PLOT SUMMARY PREDICTION:

For some reason, Reavers have been randomly and wildy coming in from the Black and attacking civilized planets and moons. They are very scary creatures. But something is wrong. Reavers NEVER come this close to the Core.

It's like they are a stampede of frightened cattle - SOMETHING is chasing them out of the Black.

The crew of Serenity is doing a job, just outside the Core Planets. They have a Reaver encounter of their own and barely escape. But tomorrow they will make the drop and get paid and keep flying.

But in the middle of the night, River walks to the bridge and turns off autopilot and changes the course of Serenity.

It turns out that Reavers have been fleeing a dangerous group of Pre-River Experiments gone wrong, who have taken over the Black. The leader of the Pre-River group mentally contacted River and influenced her. For some reason Serenity has something important.

There is a 3-way dog-fight chase scene between Reavers, Serenity (using burn in atmosphere) and the Pre-River people. Serenity is forced to land. The fight continues on the ground with guns and explosions.

Kaylee is frantically working on the damaged shuttle to provide an escape for the Serenity crew. Mal manages to seal the shuttle bay door to save Kaylee, and he orders her to get out of there. Reavers capture Simon, Mal, Zoe and Wash.

Book, River and Jayne are captured by the Pre-River folk. It becomes interesting to see River fight back and even some surprising mental abilities from Book.

Inara is not on Serenity when this happens. She has been dealing with personal problems nearby at the Companion Palace. Her own big secret is starting to come out.

Meanwhile, in tears, Kaylee flies away with the shuttle to get help. She heads towards the Companion Palace to find Inara.

Kaylee begins sneaking around the Companion Palace. She sees a large group of companions in a big room doing something like Tai Chi. Kaylee gasps as she recognizes Saffron among them.

After Inara's amazing secret comes out, a crazy confrontation happens, Inara agrees not to expose Saffron (and visa versa), and the final result is that Inara, Saffron and Kaylee fly back in a Companion-loaned security shuttle (it has guns and armor) to rescue everyone.

They find Serenity abandoned, but inside it is a total mess, as if searched completely. Kaylee opens the secret smuggling compartment and pulls out the cargo. It was not found in the search.

The ladies realize that the cargo is very important for some reason. Somehow, it can save the world.

In the end, Mal must grudgingly save the Alliance and the Reavers. We learn that Reavers, River, and the pre-River people are connected. The "world" is saved, we learn a lot about the characters, and Serenity is still on the run, still flying.

Oh, and Saffron steals the Lassiter and gets away, after she totally helps save everyone's ass.

Good Day Succatash, interesting post. I have to commend you on being such a huge fan. Your web site's nice to boot.

This was a great idea for a post. You've obviously put a lot of time into thinking about the film. Certainly anything is possible, and all we know right now is that it's going to be about reavers?

I like your suggestion that they are moving away from something. But I am still intrigued by the Blue Handed men. I think linking the Reavers to River is a great insight. I'd be willing to suggest that we might find out the Reavers are the result of a failed government experiment or test. Maybe the same experiment or test that River passed?

At the end of the day I'd watch the film even if it was about Jane teaching us how to create mudder's milk and "turn it up a notch".

Maybe they could fly into a subspace anomaly and be transported into a parallel timeline where they encounter themselves...

or..

Maybe they could encounter creatures with acid for blood that burst from ya gizzards..

or..

Maybe they discover the alliance is creating a "super weapon" call it oh I dont know a death star or something..

but seriously, I think whatever Joss decides will be way cool. I trust his better judgement.

"i think you're all missing an obvious movie premise: the resurgence of an independent rebellion against the dreaded alliance. i mean, doesn't the original pilot for the show kind of write the movie by itself? parallel to star wars.

i don't think the first movie would have to "end" per se. maybe just a subtle move in another direction but keeping with the spirit of the show. some sort of underground subversive movement against the alliance. in the pilot, simon gets river out of the "school" she was in with the help of undisclosed person(s).

i like the idea of rebellion because it helps to bring further audience appeal to the show. you know, how people like to root for the underdog (like in the original rocky). also, if the story of nine people is to have continuity, (they can only have so many adventures in space before you start reaching for plausible story lines) you really need an underlying unifying cause that connects all the characters and brings them together towards a sort of light at the end of the tunnel. furthermore, this gives a realistic tie-in with resumption of possible tv series continuation/further movies (maybe a trilogy). what i was ultimately shooting for was that the series was supposed to start off with some adventures to get the audience familiar with the characters, but then grow outside the original parameters of the character-driven show towards something greater than the sum of its parts.

look at babylon 5 for example. the first season was alright, but it wasn't until an enemy (the shadows) that threatened everyone that the show really began to get interesting. i mean, if you just have serenity running around having adventures all the time, staying one step ahead of the alliance, avoiding reavers, etc. you're basically using a "dukes of hazard" style of story telling. these are just some ideas off the top of my head, but if you look at any number of successful series (recently enterprise, b5, ds9, stv, etc) they all adopt similar story structure. you have to get something to interest/attract not only fans but NON-fans of the show and make them become invested in the fate of the characters on the show."

i like the way you think succatash. if i may, i would also like to interject some thoughts on character DRIVE as an objective look into possible movie formulation elements. take mal for one. i mean the thing that primarily "drives" him is to get as much payback on the alliance as he can as soon as he can. (zoe acts as his anchor to keep him from doing anything suicidal) the defeat of the independents is probably like yesterday to him even though it happened a while back. simon would probably like to get his sister "fixed" and resume his medical practice. (and associations with more genteel companions). river probably has superior knowledge of combat tactics and tactical strategy, as well as cypher ability. (maybe akin to ender wiggins). why couldn't she be instrumental as a general/tactician. zoe and wash are at some point in time, going to want to start a family and settle down to a "normal" life. book may want to establish a mission ar an abbey of his own. (although i personally doubt he actually is a shepherd). jayne will probably commit another betrayal when the risk of reward outweighs the punishment for betrayal. kaylee is someone i can't quite get a handle on. maybe something tragic to happen to her.
