Someone had to eventually come up with this particular thread. What song, or songs do, or did you listen to when you broke up, or got kicked to the curb, or got dumped by a loved one?

Come on now...give it up. No one will laugh because in the end we are all in this crap together.

-River

*Why do the birds keep on singing....?*

And another song to get dumped by is Dust in the Wind:

I close my eyes
Only for a moment, then the moments gone
All my dreams
Pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind
All they are is dust in the wind Same old song
Just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do
Crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind, ohh Now, don't hang on
Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away
And all your money won't another minute buy
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind Dust in the wind
Everything is dust in the wind
Everything is dust in the wind
The wind

Green Day "The Boulevard of Broken Dreams"
Sarah McLachlan "Out of the Shadows"
Gordon Downie "Mystery"

(There were probably more, but it was years ago, so it'll take me a while to conjure them all - but those were the biggies.)

the love of my life is a shady lady

But I love me more

This one goes out to the one I love
This one goes out to the one Ive left behind
A simple prop to occupy my time
This one goes out to the one I love
- REM

* The REM song is a bit sarcastic, as Michael Stipe made some comment about how songs. love songs which the artist wrote mean so much to fans that have absolutely no idea what was in his head or know thing one about his own life.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea - The Cure... yeah, it's sentimental, but that's how I felt.
Speedball OD - Velvet Acid Christ... aggro, but that's also how I felt.

Some others too, but I think those were the main ones.

Would you tell me, please which way I ought to walk from here?"
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat.
"I don't much care where," Alice added as an explanation.
"Oh, you're sure to do that," said the Cat, "if you only walk long enough."

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Too many to list, but there are a few I could put in. The last one was very tumultuous, so the emotions of the songs vary.

"It's Hard Letting You Go" - Bon Jovi
"Everybody's Fool" - Evanescence
"Why Aren't You Dead?" - Bon Jovi
"Missing" - Evanescence
"Forgotten" - Linkin Park
"Something For the Pain" - Bon Jovi
"Take a Bow" - Madonna
"In The End" - Linkin Park
"My Immortal (original)" - Evanescence
"Silent Night" - Bon Jovi

Okay, so really I almost have 'break up bands'. You get the idea.

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

I remember a 1,000 years ago when I got dumped by my husband. I remember sitting there night after retarded night listening to this song by a group called Three Degrees:

When will I see you again?
When will we share precious moments?
Will I have to wait forever?
Or will I have to suffer and cry the whole night through?

When will I see you again?
When will our hearts beat together?
Are we in love or just friends?
Is this my beginning or is this the end?
When will I see you again?
(When will I see you again?)

Are we in love or just friends?
Is this my beginning or is this the end?
When will I see you again?
(When will I see you again?)
-------------------------------

And of course no self pity party is complete without listening to a little Karen Carpenter's Rainy days and Mondays song:

Talkin' to myself and feelin' old
Sometimes I'd like to quit
Nothing ever seems to fit
Hangin' around
Nothing to do but frown
Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down.

What I've got they used to call the blues
Nothin' is really wrong
Feelin' like I don't belong
Walkin' around
Some kind of lonely clown
Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down.

Funny but it seems I always wind up here with you
Nice to know somebody loves me
Funny but it seems that it's the only thing to do
Run and find the one who loves me.

What I feel has come and gone before
No need to talk it out
We know what it's all about
Hangin' around
Nothing to do but frown
Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down.

Thinking about it all in hindsight, it's rather funny when you think about it...the song and me sitting their looking pathetic like I was so long ago. LoL!

Life is funny.

ARIANE

Iron & Wine has a very beautiful 9.5-minute song called "The Trapeze Swinger" that is my self-pity anthem when love has kicked me in the teeth.

"Please / remember me / fondly / I heard from someone you're still pretty"

For 400 year old angst, you can't do better than "Scarborough Fair."

But what really takes the cake is "Romeo and Juliet" by Mark Knopfler. "Juliet, the dice were loaded from the start." Ouch, one right in the gut.

One of the best songs I've heard for breakups is,

"Dry Your Eyes" by "The Streets"

It's not just the words but the music as well. Truly a modern classic.
Here's the words for anyone who's interested:

In one single moment your whole life can turn 'round
I stand there for a minute starin’ straight into the ground
Lookin’ to the left slightly, then lookin’ back down
World feels like it’s caved in – proper sorry frown
Please let me show you where we could only just be, for us
I can change and I can grow or we could adjust
The wicked thing about us is we always have trust
We can even have an open relationship, if you must
I look at her she stares almost straight back at me
But her eyes glaze over like she’s lookin’ straight through me
Then her eyes must have closed for what seems an eternity
When they open up she’s lookin’ down at her feet

Dry your eyes mate
I know it’s hard to take but her mind has been made up
There’s plenty more fish in the sea
Dry your eyes mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you’ve got to walk away now
It’s over

So then I move my hand up from down by my side
It's shakin’, my life is crashin’ before my eyes
Turn the palm of my hand up to face the skies
Touch the bottom of her chin and let out a sigh
‘Cause I can’t imagine my life without you and me
There’s things I can’t imagine doin’, things I can’t imagine seein’
It weren't supposed to be easy, surely
Please, please, I beg you please
She brings her hands up towards where my hands rested
She wraps her fingers round mine with the softness she’s blessed with
She peels away my fingers, looks at me and then gestures
By pushin’ my hand away to my chest, from hers

Dry your eyes mate
I know it’s hard to take but her mind has been made up
There’s plenty more fish in the sea
Dry your eyes mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you’ve got to walk away now
It’s over

And I’m just standin’ there, I can’t say a word
‘Cause everythin’s just gone
I’ve got nothin’
Absolutely nothin’

Tryin’ to pull her close out of bare desperation
Put my arms around her tryin’ to change what she’s sayin’
Pull my head level with hers so she might engage in
Look into her eyes to make her listen again
I’m not gonna fuckin’, just fuckin’ leave it all now
‘Cause you said it'd be forever and that was your vow
And you’re gonna let our things simply crash and fall down
You’re well out of order now, this is well out of town
She pulls away, my arms are tightly clamped round her waist
Gently pushes me back and she looks at me straight
Turns around so she’s now got her back to my face
Takes one step forward, looks back, and then walks away

Dry your eyes mate
I know it’s hard to take but her mind has been made up
There’s plenty more fish in the sea
Dry your eyes mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you’ve got to walk away now
It’s over

I know in the past I’ve found it hard to say
Tellin’ you things, but not tellin’ straight
But the more I pull on your hand and say
The more you pull away

Dry your eyes mate
I know it’s hard to take but her mind has been made up
There’s plenty more fish in the sea
Dry your eyes mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you’ve got to walk away now.

"Foolish Heart" by the Grateful Dead. Good for when you're out of self-pity and anger, but need a push to stand up again.

While I've never broken up with anyone through a song, I did have a girlfriend break up with me through Whitney Houston's (actually Dolly Parton's) "I Will Always Love You." An odd choice considering I'm more of the Metallica type. Anyway, that was a great indicator of why she wasn't right for me.

One that makes me laugh is Reverend Horton Heat's "Where in the Hell did You Go with My Toothbrush." HI-larious.

Lady Marian by Clannad. There are no lyrics, but the music is great. I would also agree with Phoenixrose on My Immortal.

Simon: What if he(Mal) tells you to kill me?
Zoe: (without hesitation) I kill you.
