Ok so am I the only one that thinks this rating system should change. Its been around since forever and does not do justice to all of us that do not happen to have the magical black box.
Apparently they give it to people w/ no taste in TV. That why we have a million shows by Jerry Bruckheimer. But none or next to none guys like Tim Minear ,David Greenwalt and the boss ofcourse Joss.

It is to the point where ratings should, as everything else seems to be done this day, be done online. I don't know how one would keep track so a person doesn't have multiple accounts and give multiple ratings, but it unlike the Nielsen ratings would be open to practically everyone and give a clearer picture of what people actually view on TV.

Not all of the monitoring they do now is cheat-proof. Our family had the paper booklets a few months ago to keep track of our viewing habits. There wasn't anything to keep me from lying about what I was watching.

They have been talking about just using your cable set top box for a while now. The only problem is having to replace all the ones and use a standard one through out the country. That and the invasion of privacy if you don't want to participate.

In larger urban markets, they use an automated box now. It's a separate box that's installed in-line with your cable.
But I live in a suburb and they just send out booklets here. Makes me feel a bit like a hillbilly.
Don't worry, the day is coming when they'll track what each and every one of us watch. Hell, with all the grocery store customer cards, they know what you buy at the store. They use that data to try and figure out whether you'll vote Republican or Democratic. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, btw, saw it on the news.
I once dated a guy who worked for a large cable company. They were trying to develop cable boxes that would allow them to send messages to their customers via the box. It would scroll across the LED at the customers house. But I don't know of anyone that actually has that.

kinda. They can send messages over the box now. The DCT has a message kitty that is stores them in. A light comes on on the front if you have a new message. Really annoying!

Don't forget that there are a lot of people with a vested interest in keeping the system the way it is. Nielsen first among them; they're the big dog witht the current system. With change come risk. Others that are averse to change would include:

-- the networks. they have been selling this pile of fei yoo to the advertisers as reliable. Can't admit that it isn't.....
--ad agencies. They are the middle men between the networks and the advertisers and they are also shopping the pile of crap to the advertisers.
-- the advertisers. Or at least the suits that are personally responsible for spending the millions; what would happen to them if it were proved that the current system is a dud?

That same is true with arbitron and radio ratings, and as a former program director I can speak as to that. We hated the numbers as 18th century, unreliable, worthless and bankrupt as to their accuracy. We also worshipped them for the reasons I have given. And always remember: it isn't about getting the most or best viewers/ listeners. It's about getting the most/ or best RATINGS. Different things, but the ratings are your coin.
